TOP CORPICN op Scorpions are selected each year by the faculty. The list of candidates for Top Scorpions comes from the Guidance Office - based on students who possess a 3.0 aver- age. From that list, the faculty chooses the Top Scorpions based on three categories - scholarship, leadership and ac- tivities. This year, 12 Top Scor- pions were selected via a formu- la based on the percentage of class enrollment. When consid- ering a candidate, each faculty member ranked the nominee on a rating scale from 1-3 in each category. The highest 12 in terms of points became this year's Top Scorpions. Scholar- ship includes all aspects of aca- demic life. Leadership involves the student,s ability to influ- ence peers through activities. Interests include the student's in- volvement in extra-curricular ac- tivities as well as community orga- nizations. All of this makes up the whole student or individual. When the selections were made in December, the following students were candidates for Top Scorpion: Robin Farrell, Donna Padgett, Andrea Perkins, Laura Faulk, Ja- nice Williams, Dana Mapson, Sherry Ballard, Wanda Jones, Jean Jones, Angela Butler, Doug Hilburn, Cheryl Garst, Beulah Hunt, Johnny Skipper, Tracy Johnson, Wendy Horrell, Betty Kelly, Cheryl Cross, Sonya Sloan, Debra Cooke, Joy Henderson, Deborah Woodcock, Doug Elliott. The 12 Top Scorpions for 1982 certainly have a lot of energy and creativity. It was an honor for any candidate because it showed aca- demic excellence. x Zn fwfr' fl-fc Xb 5 mtg 1 4 ll H ,gf W ff.-C-, . 411 Xl 'n ' X .. 59 Xp ' 1 - U Q X X ' 'f -ski 'W 'r -car Q JY Angela Butler s T Y ' . g as . -4 . . Donna Padgett Janice Williams at if JU IOR MAR he selection of junior marshals is an honor. These students participated at graduation ceremo- nies during their junior year. The marshals are selected because of their high academic standing in the junior class. At graduation ceremo- nies, the marshals distribute pro- grams and seat people. Six marshals were selected last year and their names and pictures appear on this double-page spread . . . The discus- sion of Junior Marshals should re- mind us that it is a most difficult task to recognize all of the students who receive honors in the spring of the year. With yearbook deadlines toward mid-year and constant changes in yearbook personnel, in- cluding advisors, sometimes these people are excluded from yearbook coverage. Hopefully, students who earn honors this spring will be in the 1983 edition of Scorpio. HAL There are many honors and awards presented by the staff and faculty during the late stages of the school year. Many of these are presented at the annual Awards Day ceremonies which is held in the gymnasium. Others such as athletic awards and voca- tional honors are given at special events such as the athletic and co-op banquets and club meetings. There are also certain private organiza- tions that give awards of merit to deserving students. These are presented at the annual ceremonies and at graduation exercises. One of the best awards presented by a community patron is the Presant Award. It is given by Mr. Ben Presant to a deserv- ing senior in the form of a S1000 scholarship. ?
