ESTABLISH DYNASTY SCORPION GIRLS DEFEND THREE STRAIGHT EAST WACCAMAW 2A CHAMPIONSHIPS The North Brunswick girls' softball team is Leland's ver- sion of a dynasty - winning three straight East Waccamaw 2A Conference championships, three post-season playoff berths, the 1980 state title and the 1981 state runnerup spot. Guided by North assistant principal William Hargrove, the Lady Scorpions compiled a 57-5 record over the past three seasons. It's a tribute to the girls for having won the school's first atheltic cham- pionship of any kind. After last season's near miss, the girls want another one. Three years ago, Hargroveis team went unbeaten in regular- season play en route to an even- tual 18-1 record. The only loss came to Cape Fear of Fayette- ville in the third round of the state playoffs. The 1980 season was a perfect one. An unbeaten bunch of Scorpion girls defeat- ed Bandyis twice in an after- noon doubleheader to win the state championship behind the pitching of Belinda Jacobs. Ja- cobs, who won 16 games that season, notched both wins against Bandys. It was a great day for North Brunswick High! Last season, the Scorpion girls advanced to the state finals and journeyed to Lexington where they came up one game short of a second state title in succes- sion. It was still a proud mo- ment and they represented the East Waccamaw Conference well. Leland has a fine girls' softball program and there is reason to believe that girls soft- ball will remain strong. Coach Hargrove's assistant, Mrs. Della Sloan, deserves much credit in North's recent success.
