Hundreds of students have gone out from this school to take their places in colleges, voca- tions, and jobs. The records of achievement which they have left be- hind and the measures of success which have come to them, indicate that North Brook High School was and is a school of which any com- munity might be proud to call its own. Within its walls, its warmth has served as a friendly hearth, radiating trust and friendship among students and teachers. And so--in appreciation to all who have helped to maintain North Brook High School -- To the administration which sponsored our education -- To every teacher who has taught in the class rooms-- To the principals who have guided us-- To all other school personnel -- To the parents and patrons who have inspired us-- To this community which has supported us-- To every wholesome and uplifting influence which has helped to make North Brook High School what it has been and is--we, the an- nual staff of the Le Souvenir, dedicate this space, in this, the twenty- first volume of our annual. ed, and life's bat-tles on, Fine Alma Mater'! Advantages and adversities have met you here. The signifi- cant fact is not what your circumstances have been but how they have affected you. Thus it will be wherever you may go. Not what your environment is but what you let it do to you will be the ultimate test. CLASS HISTORY It was July, 1956, a calm summer day, radiant with the sunshine of hope, cheer, and joyous promise, when fifty-two pupils from the three North Brooks met and became acquainted in the eighth grade of the North Brook High School. After our first year to- gether we were promoted to our freshman year in high school with Mr. Heavner and Mrs. Guess as our home room teachers. We elected class officers who were: Bill Bess, Jr., President; Rita Taylor, Vice President; Barbara Wehunt, Secretary-Treasurer; Linda Roy- ster, Reporter. We all studied hard and on the last day of our Freshman Year we were informed that henceforth we would be known as Sophomores. Almost before we knew it the school bells were calling us to take up our new work again. This year we had more confidence and self-assurance than the previous year, and so proceeded to enlarge the volume of our knowledge. Mrs. Guess was our home- room teacher, and our Sophomore officers were; Barbara Wehunt, President; Jane Roye- ster, Vice President; Rita Taylor, Secretary; Linda Royster, Reporter; Linda Kay Houser, Reporter. During our Junior year Mrs. Guess was again our home room teacher and Tommy Towery was elected as President; Melvin Lowe, Vice President; Patsy Hoyle, Secretary; Rita Taylor, Treasurer; Linda Kay Houser, Reporter. One of the outstanding events of this year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. We also received our class rings. Everyone was thrilled over wearing this emblem of achievement. We took great pleasure in pre- senting our Junior Play, entitled Saved By The Belle, directed by Mrs. Gaskins. Al- though we were carefree and unthinking of the future, we were paving the way for our final year in high school. The climax of our school days, 1960, the fruit of our twelve years of pleasant labor, our Senior year. The forty-six remaining seniors returned, with their heads held high, to complete the task we had set out to do twelve years ago. This year we had Mr. Shel- ton as our sponsor and the following class officers; President, Tommy Towery; Vice President, Judy Arthur; Secretary, Barbara Wehunt; Treasurer, Jennie Williamson; Re- porter, Marilyn Leonhardt; Sentinel, Jerry Craig. The Seniors of '60 have shown dili- gence and originality in sponsoring the Le Souvenir and The Babbling Brook, our two school publications. As we are finishing this last year of high school, we are seriously thinking of the future. Now it is with joy and tears that we draw near graduation--joy that we are at last nearing the goal for which we have been striving--tears that our ways must part and we must leave our happy days behind. Thus, as we end this history of the class of '60 we don our caps and gowns on the night of May 23, and happily, but yet sadly, receive our diplomas and begin a new phase of life. Marilyn Leonhardt, Historian LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of North Brook High School, being of sound mind and body, do make and de- clare this our Last Will and Testament. Patricia Ann Shull CLASS PROPHECY Ten years hence, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred seventy, the noted doctor, namely Ronnie Cooke, of the densely populated township of North Brook. has decided as his experiment of the year to try desperately to examine the students, who called themselves Seniors in the year of our Lord nineteen sixty. As he attempts to grasp his futurescope, he first catches a glimpse of none other than our two great lovers, Bill Bess and Tommy Houser, who are the heroes of Heart Break Ridge and are now on the staff of General Edward Ingle in San Antonio. Marsha Baxter has finally achieved her success in dramatics. She is now chief usherette at the State Theater in Shelby, North Carolina. Judy Arthur didn't make a school teacher but she does have a large interest in The Last Chance a Mountain Resort, in Boone. She and Mickey own half the town now. Our husky hunk of man, Sonny Houser, has taken Jimmy Houser's place in the wrestling match- es and now appears weekly over LOST television. By the way, his next match will be against John- nie Willis for the title of heavy weight champion of the world. Alas! Hold everything! Dr. Cooke has caught a glimpse of another '60 Senior, who appears to be Jane Royster. She is another teacher of Physical Education of the new consolidated high school, West Lincoln, in their new gymnasium. She has lots of help from her old classmates, Brenda Beam, who teaches Home Economics, and Marilyn Leonhardt who is the Business Education teacher. The Science Department of the new school is running wild with James Deaver as the new Science teacher. Barbara Wehunt is doing real good just to have graduated from college with a Masters degree in Secretarial Work after being out of high school for so long. She now holds the position of Secretary to Vice President of General Voters. Could that be the one time quiet girl Peggy Davis, whom Dr. Cooke now sees? Certainly and she is painting the town with her present husband, having had six temporary marriages previous to this. However, Peggy has inherited fortunes from these previous marriages. Coming up the street behind Peggy, Dr. Cooke sees Patsy Brotherton, still buying clothes, this time not for herself. She has three boys after finding herself a husband to settle down to. In high school we thought she was a hopeless case. As Dr. Cooke settles back in his easy chair, calmly he looks upon the new proprietor of King's Trucking Lines in Vale, namely Johnny King. Johnny, after many attempts as a pilot tor, DeltayAlre lines, finds he makes a better salary as proprietor. Not far away, Dr. Cooke finds Tommy Towery as he spins his platters on the Road Show from GONE radio station in Lincolnton. You'd think Patsy Hoyle and Nancy Cline were in their second childhood. Although they look older, they are still into lots of mischief. Their joy in high school was playing tricks on Mary Jane Parker. They still play tricks, but they aren't getting away with it as much as they used to because Mary Jane's husband, B. E., is there fighting back. The futurescope now dawns on Myrtle Brown, the doll of the Senior Class, who has now reached the height of her career as a model. Myrtle models used Clothing at the Next-to- New- Shop on North Street in Fallston. And now, Dr. Cooke sees Jennie Lou Williamson, wife of Reverend Tucker, as we all expected. He has lots of trouble with Jennie, as she was always such a wildcat in high school. Linda Martin is seen at Appalachian teaching psychology. In school Linda always studied each person carefully, in hopes that some day she might be a psychiatrist. Whom do you think Dr. Cooke sees now? Yes, it is the hard working girl by the name of Patsy Shull, She is head nurse for Dr. Max Saine, who kills all and cures none. Well, Patsy finally made ite Slowly the futurescope pauses upon the famous comedian of the Darrell Hull elon) Hour on Sunday nights over CBS, better known as Jackie Heavner. This is only her part time job, at home she has a house full of little comedians. What to Dr. Cooke's eyes should appear but Juanita Willis who is employed at Dedmon's Stock- yard talking the horns off billy goats. Now Dr. Cooke's futurescope turns to Faye Lindsay who is now employed at the All- White Soap Factory in Cookesville. And now as Dr. Cooke gazes into the futurescope, whom should he see but Edith Leatherman, who has just won an academy award for her exclusive musical motion picture. Suddenly as Dr. Cooke attempts to bring another member of the ‘60 class into focus, the future- scope begins to vibrate mightily as the scene comes to view. Ginger Willis is vigorously hitting her punch bag in the swank work-out gym which she occupies. Ginger has become the world's most not- ed woman boxer. A bright ray of sunshine beams across the focus lens and standing in the beam of her new Florida residence, Dr. Cooke sees Linda Royster, who is now head of the Welfare Dept. in West Palm Beach. Linda Kay Houser is happily married and lives in an adorable little house with a white picket fence around it. But wait! A small object is seen going around a race track. Oh! It's Melvin Lowe, in the Mid- get Car Races. Melvin has joined Joey Chitwood's races, namely Joey Chitwood Melvin Lowe, Inc. As Dr. Cooke continues his search for the '60 Seniors, his futurescope turns toward New York. There he sees Rita Taylor still editing, not the yearbook this time, it's the New York Times. Still the futurescope goes round and round, stopping long enough to see Dale Taylor instructing a class in psychology at Columbia University. We knew professor would lead to something besides just the nickname. Peering into the enormous futurescope, Dr. Cooke sees that skillful swimmer, who once attempt- ed swimming the English Channel, Jerry Craig. After unhappy success, Jerry married an instructor in swimming and now they are teaching their 10 little Craig's swimming lessons in Mud Creek. The futurescope still continues the search, although it is beginning to get rather dim, it is still searching for Seniors of ‘60. Coming into view, Dr. Cooke sees Harold Leonhardt and Thomas Good- man, now two of the most successful farmers in North Brook. Not far from them lives Louella Linger- felt. She finally got married after wearing that diamond all through high school. Linda Wright and Dean Baxter are still the best of friends. They now share an apartment in Cherryville where they are beauty operators. Still one of the seniors is no where to be found. Dora Alice Beam is missing from our midst. The last we heard of her she was in Okinawa with her husband who is a captain in the army. Well, Dr. Cooke will have to discontinue this experiment as his eyes have become greatly strain- ed and the fuses have blown out of the futurescope, but due to examining such an array of genius of '60, Prophetess Linda Royster President - Ronnie Beam sy .
