NORTH BRANCH HIGH SCHOOL. NORTH BRANCH MICHIGAN THE 1966 Editor--Cheryl Costello Co-Editor--Janie Hack Business Manager--Terry Ostrander BRONCONIAN The BRONCONIAN is proudly dedicated to a group of men who by their deeds have shown their sterling worth and their continuous desire for a better school. These men have formed a group called the MEN'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION. The North Branch Men's Athletic Association was organized in 1963. The purpose of the club was to give all possible assistance to the Athletic Department to make it one of the finest. These men planned ways to raise money to purchase new equipment and gave of their time and energy whenever and wherever needed. The first officers of the M.A.A. were President, Dr. Lewis Graham, Vice President, Edward Krepps, secretary, Treasurer, Bob Peet. This year the officers are President, Sam Herron; Vice President, Hugh Mclnally, secretary, Jim Hogan, and treasurer, Bob Peet. During these years the M.A.A. has bought two sections of bleachers for the gym, bought football, basketball, baseball and track uniforms, bought track equipment, including an indoor jumping pit, sent boys to basketball camp, one year sent a boy to Boys' State, provided a summer recreation program for an average of two hundred fifty boys and helped in buying new blazers for the basketball team for next year. What a wonderful record! We feel that this group of men deserves a great deal of praise for their efforts and the final results. These men are doing more than buying equipment; they are helping boys to learn the qualifications that make good American citizens. 2 Foreword The years go by and soon we are all on our own busy way. Here in North Branch High School in this year, 1965-1966, you have helped to prepare yourself for this future that is so close to us. We have attempted to place between the covers of this BRONCONIAN some reminders of the many happy times you have spent here so that in the future you may look at these pages and recall those whose lives touched yours and left their indelible mark upon it. 3 Table of Contents Title page 1 Dedication 2 Foreword 3 Table of Contents 4 Administration 5 Teacher of the Year 9 Faculty 10 1 Seniors 13 Foreign Exchange Students 31 Football 32 Homecoming 38 Organizations 43 Basketball 53 Underclass 63 Spring Sports 73 Advertising 76 i ADMINISTRA TION AND FACULTY Board of Education Mr. Remy Curell, Vice President. Dr. Lewis Graham, Trustee; Mr. Winston, Trustee. In their hands lie the future o JVBHS. 6 Mr. Donald Knox, Secretary Mr. Allen Lake, President Mr. Archie Mabery, Treasurer They bear the responsibilities — On these two pages are pictured the administrative body of the North Branch Area Schools. It is because of these gentlemen that we have the fine school and the educational facilities that we do. The trust of the community was placed in the Board of Education when the voters elected them to office and they have not failed them. Mr. Daniels came to us this year as Superintendent of Schools. He found many challenging situations and met them very efficiently. We are sure that he will stay with us for some time to come. Mr. Vincent is remembered by all as the friend of the student who can wield a firm hand when the occasion arises. Year after year students return to thank Mr. Vincent for his guidance and concern for them while they attended NBHS. 7 Three pleasant memories! Mrs. Nan Fricke is Mr. Daniel's secretary but she is friend to all, faculty and students alike. Her vast knowledge of school procedure and her sympathetic attitude with her love for the student make her a much appreciated figure at NBHS. 8 Mrs. Betty Miller is in reality Mr. Vincent's secre- tary but finds herself involved in many more situations and activities that need a helping hand. Mrs. Loree Wilder, NBHS bookkeeper also often leaves her duties to aid the student or teacher. Teacher of the year 1966 Mr. Gary Sutton When the prized award of Teacher of the Year was named as Mr. Gary Sutton, Band Instructor; Mr. Sutton looked as happy as he does in this picture. Mr. Sutton has been at North Branch for eight years and he has had eight wonderful bands. His Marching Bands, Twirlers, Concert Bands, Ensemble groups have all been of the best. He has the upmost admiration and respect of all students. Mr. Sutton has spent many, many hours after school helping students to better themselves by supervising their practice. He has taken students to Interlocken and during the summer of 1965, he took two bus loads of students and chaperones to play at the World's Fair in New York City. In 1965, Mr. Sutton made it possible for a student, Miss Sherry Smith, to travel to Europe with the All Student Band, U.S.A. During the summer of 1966, Miss Suzanne Graham also made this trip to Europe with the All Student Band, U.S.A. We are sure no better choice would have been made for Teacher of the Year than Mr. Gary Sutton. 9 JV.B.H.S. Juniors and Seniors alike called the prom a huge success. Dining by candlelight was followed by dancing to the music of a good band. She came—They go— Here we have pictured three exchange students. At the left is Miss Corinna Hetsch, who came to spend the year with us from Kiel, Germany. Corinna has been a very pleasing addition to our student body. She has taken part in many school activities and has told us a great deal about her homelife in Germany. Because of her friendly attitude and pleasing personality we feel that we know and understand the German youth better. We hope she has en- joyed her stay with us and on her return will take back many pleasant memories to Germany. Indeed, Corinna, you will leave many lonesome friends when you leave NBHS. The other two girls are Suzanne Orr and Doris Sillers. These girls are going to spend eight weeks in Europe this summer. Sue is going to Germany and Doris is going to The Netherlands. The girls were selected by a board made up of faculty and student council members. We are certain they will make fine representatives of NBHS and we wish them all the luck in the world. Please bring back many stories of your experiences to us when you return, Sue and Doris. 31 Varsity Football Squad KNEELING: Keith Delmidge, Manager; Gary Bennet, Mike Griswold, Ron McCrory, John Thompson, Lowell Boyle, Jerry Kuzma, Steve Fricke, Fred Griswold, Gary Elder. At the right, Donna has been crowned by Mr. A1 Lake, President of the Board of Education. Carol Ritter is at Donnas right escorted by her father, Mr. Jack Ritter. Sherry Smith is at Donna’s left escorted by her father, Mr. Carlton Smith. Queen Donna is escorted by her father, Mr. Lawrence Hebberd. One of the two seniors attending the Queen was Sherry Smith, pictured at the left. Sherry is captain of the cheerleading squad, an active member of the N. B. Concert Band as bass clarinetist, secretary of the Student Council, and an active member of the National Honor Society. Adding beauty to the court was Carol Ritter, also a senior. Carol Ritter was Secretary of the National Honor Society, an alto clarinetist in the N. B. Concert Band, and was chosen DAR Good Citizen of the Class of '66. 0 39 Queen’s court Linda Turner, Sophomore; Cheryl Patrick, Junior; Sherry Smith, Senior; SEATED Queen Donna Hebberd, Senior; Carol Ritter, Senior; Carol Woodrow, Freshman and Corinna Hetsch, Senior Exchange Student. Homecoming Homecoming activities began in September with the first committee meeting to plan the building of the floats to be in the Homecoming Parade. The game with Millington had been scheduled, pep meetings and rallies were planned. The Bronco Marching Band was planning a very special half- time show. Not the least of all these preparations was the chosing of the girl to be Homecoming Queen and the girls to be on her court. One girl from the fresh- men, sophomore and junior classes was chosen to represent their class in the Homecoming events and throughout the year. The Queen was chosen from the three girls nominated by the senior class and voted on by the student body. The supreme moment all are waiting for comes, as the President of the Board of Education steps up behind the chosen one and places the crown on her head. Cheers and tears of joy are in order as the Queen receives congratula- tions by the fans and team. The final event is the dance held in the cafeteria. Our foreign exchange student, if a girl, is auto- matically an honorary member of the Queen's court. Miss Corinna Hetsch made a lovely addition to the court of our 1965 Homecoming Queen. Corinna Hetsch, Senior Foreign Exchange Student 40 Banners waving, guns booming, rockets fly- ing, smoke rolling, Mr. Vasold driving the tractor; it took all this to make up the Junior Class float, first prize winner in the Homecoming parade. Many hours of produc- tion and a great deal of thought and planning went into the making of this float. The Juniors chose the theme Sink 'em for their float. The sophomore float depicted our age with an observatory. With its telescope pointing skyward, it is a very suitable float for today. The Sophomore theme was Observing a Victory. Here, at the right, is the senior class float, a roulette wheel spinning and a one arm bandit throwing out the jackpot, with the theme Bettin1 on the Bron- cos . The Seniors walk proudly behind their contri- bution to the Homecoming parade. 41 Fly On To Victory was the theme the Freshman gave their third place entry. And indeed it looked the part too, as though it would take off at any minute on its blue wings with its tail flying in the wind and hover over the football field to bring the Broncos Good-Luck.
