Two Great Days in 1961 Make History for Seniors Two scenes at the Junior Senior Prom. Seniors Character Comes with Learning . . . Life is a big challenge. To cope with it, and keep up with it, the future leaders of America must be successful in carrying out their plans for the lives they will soon be leading as adult citizens. The biggest challenge to a person is their own self. Ability to make a success of yourself comes with learning how to be successful. Character has to be built. High school is a good beginning for a fine character which will lead you to the threshold of being the success you really want to be. Building the pathway to your future happiness means developing and protecting your mind and self now. Being able to cope with problems and solve them is a necessity in life now and is a valuable asset to keep through your lifetime. Mastering defeats, victories, and failures without burdening others helps to keep friends. Planning things before trying to make them work for you saves time and is much more efficient. Mental ability isn't all. It helps, but you have to attain heights in other fields as well to make the life you have planned the success you want it to be. The personal you counts a great deal. Good grooming is learned in school. But true values are already there. They just need developing. Your friends, teachers, and parents are the biggest help in this and other problems you have. Let them help you, and life will be easier as well as much more liveable. We, the Senior Class, are ready to go out in the world and try our hand at success. We wish to thank everyone for the help and understanding they have given us in our high school years. Early in the Fall, we spent many awarding hours planning and making our Homecoming float. It was chosen best of all entries. Our first real money making project was the magazine sale. It proved to be interesting as well as fun. We had a horrible time making our balance come out even with the money at hand, but even worrying about that was fun. The concession stand was given to the Seniors to help make money for the trip. Bake sales and car washes helped build up our depleated treasury. We sold sweat shirts to the High School and smaller grades. More money!! We had a hard time making the shirts, cash, and balance come out even this time too. This was one of the most interesting projects we took up during the year. We had a blast on the paper and bottle drive. All the kids went out to collect papers and bottles from neighbors and friends. Then we turned them in for the refund. The mothers put on some rummage sales to help us. The chicken dinner was dismissed this year, so we had to think of more ways to make money. The town was monopolized by the Senior money-making projects, but they always helped us out by buying and contributing. Pajama parties made the year loads of fun. Other parties were given too. Also, there was the Prom which the Juniors gave us. It was so pretty and so much fun; and even nicer be- cause it was the last one given for us while we were in school. These are some of the memories we will have to look back on in future years. We are glad we could share them with you! Very little sleep was caught up on while we were on the boat to Mackinaw though. We started out from Detroit on a Sunday and came back Tuesday evening. The trip was very enjoyable as well as interesting. We were all surprised to learn so much of Michigan's historical background. After the trip, came the sad and serious Graduation. Tears were shed, but everyone was proud and happy under the gloom. As you walked up the aisle, all the years of waiting, wish- ing, and working to get out of school finally seemed worth all the effort. Now we have taken the final step from child- hood into adult life, and the future. LEE STEVENS ROGER TAYLOR We Bid Our High School Farewell . . . Valedictorian, Larry Gormley; Salutatorian, Thomas Barnes. SENIORS REACH THE SUMMIT Much hard work and long hours of study bring these seniors to the top. Larry Gormley was named Valedictorian with an average of 3.786, and Thomas Barnes, Salutatorian with an average of 3.619. Clark Smoke became the first North Branch FFA student to receive the State Farmer Degree, the highest degree given in the organization. He also received Honorable mention for his entry in the Editorial contest sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and the Women's Advertising Club of Detroit. Mary Jane Monroe, Secretary; Laura Mead, Vice President; Willson, Marsh, Treasurer; Thomas Barnes, President; John Clothier, Member of Student Council. Faculty Advisers: Mrs. Cathryn, Mrs. Julia Scholz; Mr. John Hunter, Mr. Max Hall. These ten seniors were chosen the outstanding students of the Class of '61. Grades were high all through their four years of schooling. Much was accomplished to help make them better leaders in America through hard study. Left to right in the FIRST ROW are; Larry Gormley, the Valedictorian; Dianne Torr, Patricia Oleksy, Dorothy Crawford, and Thomas Barnes, the Salutatoriam In the SECOND ROW are; Mary Jane Monroe, Leona Lange, Kenneth Bow- man, Janet Schmidtke, and Laura Mead. The best dancers could be none other than Roger Taylor and Karen Martell. Just ask any teacher who the class sleepers are and you hear the names shouted Dave Bates and Sandy Hyde. We found the most courteous to be Les Frampton and Judy Hiltz. For their wonderful performance in the Senior Play, Larry Gormley and Mary Jane Monroe were picked as best actor and actress. And for always looking at the grumpy side of things Clark Smoke and Annette Nellenbach were chosen class pessimists. (Not really.) Our cutest couple had to be Ed Baker and Janet Schmidtke. For being great lovers John Clothier and Diane Torr could well take the place of Rock Hudson and Liz Taylor in the movies. In every class there is always teacher’s pet and ours is no exception they are Ron Ward and Diane Torr. There was no disputing over who would get shortest and tallest: Tom Gormley and Terri Farkas. Tom Barnes possibly because of the long orations he gave to the class during his four years as class president, and Donna Haupt because of her fine work on the debate team were chosen as our class orators. And last but not least the two that are forever giggling, Eddie Link and Karen Martel. We would like to say that this was all in fun and not necessarily true. for John Kennedy and N.B. Varsity Football The football players take a few minutes to relax before going out to play another game. This time is also used for a last minute runover of the plays, and a short pep talk by Coach Marazita. In the pregame conference with Coach Marazita, he tells them that they must be good losers as well as good winners; not only winning the game--counts, but also how the game is played. (Left) Mr. Marazita and Mr. Haus plan plays in a pre- practice conference. They must make sure the plays work just right, utilizing the teams abilities. 66 Dan Scrimger, Dale Wilkens, Bill Henne, Mike Castle, Bob Forys, Larry Fricke, John Clothier, Paul Henne, Joe Kuzma, Charles Hebberd, Dave Bates. Excitement runs high as do the football players when they hit the gridiron for their final clash with the enemy. They defeated the Mayville Wildcats 13 to 6 in their last game. In the background is the new scoreboard presented to the athletic department by the Mom’s Athletic Club. The Mom’s have been very diligent and hard working during the past year. After each game they gave a D. J. dance and provided the concession. We feel very grateful to the Mom's Club for all they have done in the past and are continuing to do. 67 Co-captains, John Clothier and Dick Coutts. Football Has (Left) Senior tackle Dick Coutts handled the Teams kick-off duties. Dick booted the pigskin a total of 515 yards. (Below) Coach Marazita, Marideth Sealey and manager Steve Fricke take time-off after school to lime the foot- ball field. This shows a coach's many talents. He not only must instruct the team in the game of football, tend their aches and pains, and listen to their complaints, but also act as grounds keeper and see thqt the football field is in proper condition for the approaching games. Senior guards and quarterback, Bill Henne, (21); Dick John- ston (44) and Les Frampton (26) are aided by junior center and most valuable player for the '60-'61 season, Dan Scrimger. (Below) Coach Haus plays a duel role as line coach and trainer. Here he tapes the ankles of senior fullback, Larry Fricke, for a coming game. Senior halfback John Clothier sidesteps on- rushing defenders. John received honorable mention on the all conference team this year. Bill Henne, pictured above, left, also received honorable mention. He was also elected first team guard on the all-county team. Left to right, Quarterback, Les Frampton, (26) who passed a total of 383 yards. Joe Kuzma (11) halfback. David Bates (23) handled all of the punting this year for 484 total yards kicked. Many Phases (Far left) Gary Tibbits, tackle on the senior squad. (Bottom right) Head Coach Marizata explains a play to co-coaches Bogar, Reeves, Cline, and Haus. (Far right) Good teams need good managers and we had an excellent one in the person of Stanley Bub Fricke.
