THC BRONCONIAN Published by The Annual Staff North Branch High School North Branch, Michigan 1953 edUcate. % % % % % % % % % % to Mother and Dad and the Faculty From the hearts of the Senior Class of 1953, spoken by the Bronconian Annual Staff, come the words. Thank You. This simple, but deep felt phrase is extended to you Mom and Dad and Members of the Faculty of North Branch High School. Each one of you have watched us grow and mature into the men and women we are today. That maturity would never have been achieved if it hadn't been for the understanding hand that you, our parents, placed on our heads. Neither could we have gained the knowledge that we take with us outside the doors, forever closed, of our school, without you, our teachers. All of your eager contributions given to us in the very short span of our school days will forever be appreciated and never forgotten in our hearts. So, when you read this simple dedication and in years to come once again turn to its page in this book, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your patience helped build the lives of 52 people and the generations that will someday follow in their footpaths. Surely, when such appreciation sincerely comes from the lips of so many young people, it is known that God has a place in his heart for all of you. SCHOOL BOARD MR. WARREN CRAWFORD, TRUSTEE; MR. CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION! M.A. UNIVER- SITY OF MICHIGAN. The following words are a few of the milestones that lead to the full and abundant life that we all strive for: Faith, Belief, Sincerety, Honesty, Integrity, Love, Prayer, Friendliness and Appreciation. The best possible impression you can give piople is that you are sincer, squareshooting and above-board. The following words are a few of the milestones that lead to the full and abundant life that we all strive for: Faith, Belief, Sincerety, Honesty, lntegrity,Love, Prayer, Friendliness and Appreciation. The best possible impression you can give people is that you are sincere, squareshooting and above-board. The little test which I have found very helpful is called the Four Way Test. 1. I s it the Truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better understanding? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? If you use the milestones suggested and the Fourway Test for your actions you won't go far wrong. Sincerely, Wesley Clayton 3 PRINCIPAL MR. ALBERT STICKLE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LIFE CER- TIFICATE AND A.B. CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION; MICHIGAN STATE NORMAL COLLEGE; UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS ADVANCED MATHEMATICS. Who can deny that just as beauty is in the eye of the ob- server, so success is in the heart of him who does his best? 'Tis not what man does that exalts him, but what man would do! Strive, then, with faith in your power and trust in the infinite good, to do the task that is assigned you, ever keep- ing sacred the integrity of your own mind, and you cannot hope or dare too much. And never lose sight of the truth that no one has faith in the man who has no faith in himself. You must have self-reliance, for it is only the man that stands alone who is strong. No one can bring you success but yourself. In this great country of ours no position is too high or no achievement too great to be possible for the humblest among us, but we must remember that patience and perseverance are essential to attainment. ’Heaven is not reached at a single bound. But we build the ladder by which we rise From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies, And we mount to its summit, round by round.' Mr. Albert Stickle MRS. RUTH A. FOX Elementary Principal, Third Grade. B. S., Michigan State Normal College. As Jane Addams so aptly said: The most precious moment in human development is the young creature’s assertion that he is unlike any other human being, and has an individual contri- bution to make to the world. Variation from the established type is at the root of all change, the only possible basis for progress, all that keeps life from growing unprofitable stale and repetitious.” We alone cannot educate our children, we can only teach and guide them. We lived in terror of the thought of initation. At last that day in October came when we were put on the auction block and sold os slaves to the sophomores. The following day we spent carrying books and bowing to our masters. The initation was over and we could breathe again. In November we had the cake walk at the school fair and this resulted in added money to our treasury. We donated twenty five dollars to the atheletic field. In May we had a bake sale to bring our treasury up for that senior trip we were looking forward tol School closed with all of us planning on bing big Sophomores that fall. The class officers for our Freshmen year were President, Bill Stiglich, Vice President, Pug Brusie, Secretary, Shirley Deckham, and Treasurer, Beverly Patrick. The ones who left our ranks were Owen Cheney and Joan Hicks. The one who joined our ranks was James Morris. Number of students at the beginning of the school year --- 84. Number of student at the end of the school year ----------83. QLgaa When August of 1950 came around the corner we, as green freshmen of the past, came to school with the idea of being Sophomores with Robert Currie and James Bruce as our sponsors. Soon after we were settled in school as Sophomores, a few of our class mates left our ranks. John Castle and Clarence Kennidy left us to serve our country. Dorothy Walker and Lenore Miller left us to start the task of housekeeping, and during the summer Janet Myers and Betty Lou Snover joined the marriage crowd. Don Evans, Clarence Hurd, Harry McConnell, Larry Miles, Martha Miles, Patricia Morey, and Lois Vielhaber left us to face this strange wide world alone. Initiation was really a lot of fun. We as Sophomores could buy the Freshmen as our slaves. They had to obey us for one day and one evening. Some of them were quite frightened at first but they discovered the Sophomores, the Class of 53” wasn't so bad after all. Our class officers were President Jack N©Uenbach, Vice President Margaret Brusie, Secretary Donna Byers, and Treasurer Pat Horton. For the school fair, we thought up the novel idea of the “Cake Walk” which yielded us some of that much needed money. Than as time went on we started thinking of something to do to raise money. We decided to have a Talent Show,” with Jerry Mundale and Patricia Horton as Master and Mistress of Ceremonies. What could go wrong, we made very well again. Summer came with vacation and we all thought about coming back next fall as MIGHTY JUNIORS. jUitotof uruosi August of 1951 came and we came back to school as proud Juniors. Our class numbered 64, but a few soon left us. Mr. Geiger and Miss Warren were our sponsors. Barbara Almas left us to go to Columbiaville. Bob Chambers, Jerry Mundale and Edsel Ross left us to Join the U. S. Navy. Sigmund Gura, Dorothy Klauka and Lloyd Maynard decided to leave our class to work in the big wide world. We received one new student from Columbiaville, Byran Taylor. In October we were all excited for the ring man arrived and we ordered our rings. They came some time in March. For the School Fair we again had the cake walk and walked away with some more money for our trip. In January we contacted the Curtis Publishing Co. and had a magazine sale. We sold over $800. with Lee Kelly our top salesman. The girls (losers of the contest) gave the boys a party. The Operetta Meet Arizona” a western scene was enjoyed by all and with the help of Mr. Church and our sponsors was a wonderful success. The talent show which was made up of high school and grade students was well attended with, John Engle- man placing first Jim O’Brien second, and Gail Fricke and Margaret Brusie third. Our last activity of the year was the Junior and Senior prom which we gave in honor of the Seniors. The last day of school came and we left with the idea of coming back next year as Dignified Seniors. 1 Senior QLaM, «Al totuf August 25th, School opens, and what a day for the new SENIORS of North Branch High School, with so may new plans to be made. We started out the year with a total of 53 students in our class, including one newcomer, Betty Lou Klauka, and lost one member on the way, Betty Tallieu, who left to become a homemaker. Our Sponsors this year were Miss Betty Warren, and Mr. Charles Asbury. Our Cl ass Officers were Margaret Ann Brusie as President; Jack Nellenbach, Vice President; Norma Klauka, Secretary; and John Engleman as Treasurer. One of the most important things to happen, in our Senior Year, according to us, was the taking of the Senior Pictures, which came September 23rd. The one day that you could really tell the Seniors from the rest of the Students, because of their flashy clothes. The school fair arrived soon after that, held on the Athletic Field, on the evening of September 26th, where we sponsored the Bingo. November 12 13, two dates not to be forgotten, especially by the Cyrus Goolus” family, for these dates designate the nights of the Senior Ploy, titled HEADIN’ FOR THE HILLS. The girls of the Senior Class won’t forget this night, December 15th! For it's the night the boys had to throw a party for us girls, because they lost in the magazine drive to see who could sell more subscriptions, the boys or girls, we showed em! January 12-16 wasn’t a very happy week for the Senior's. Semester Exams! Need I say more? On February 24th, the Senior’s sponsored a Chicken Dinner at the American Legion Hall with everthing being donated by the Seniors of the class, to make money for our trip. April 24th, Mardi Gras time for the Seniors; the chance to give our last dance while in N. B. H. S. Our theme—“Tulip Time. Orchestra— The Pavoleers. May 8th, the Juniors held the annual Junior-Senior Prom. This dance was held in our honor, our last formal dance in N. B. H. S. The week of May 24th was a very exciting week for us, and one, I'm sure that we'll never forget. For that is when we took our trip to Washington D. C and West Virginia, where we visited such places as the Congressional Library, the Supreme Court, the Old and New National Museums, and the Arlington Cemetery, where we viewed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and were able to watch the impressive changing of the guard. We also stopped to see Mount Vernon, Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. And, of course, we had ample time to view the WHITE HOUSE, home of our President. We left Washington, but only eager to get back for our diplomas, which were coming up very soon! The 1952 football season started at North Branch on Sep- tember 1, with seventy-six boys reporting. This happens to be the largest number of boys ever to report for football in the school's history. This seemed to start a happy chain of events for the 1952 season, because after that things really brightened. First of all. Dr. Baird collected enough money to outfit the varsity squad with new red plastic helmets. The helmets, com- bined with new white uniforms seemed to give the boys that little extra spirit needed for the first game, which is always the tough one. They defeated Dryden High School that first game by the score of 25-6 and from there went on to the first undefeated foot- ball season in the schools history. The only blemish on this shining record was a scoreless tie with Ubly High. Along with being undefeated, the Bronco grid squad also won the championship in the newly formed South Central League, by defeating Millington, Mayville, and Ortonville. To make sure there would be no idle rumors, they defeated Imlay City who en- tered the conference after the season had started. The 52 Bronco eleven was a well balanced team, in that it had an even distribution of strength in the line and in the back- field. The coaches have only one regret concerning this 52 eleven, and that is that eight of the starting lineup were seniors To set the coaches' minds at ease, however, there ore a great number of well experienced reserves returning to join with three or four varsity veterans. This should make a good mucidos for the 1953 team. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE N.B. OPPonent 25 DRYDEN 6 32 MICH.
