'lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllllllk A MESSAGE TO STUDENTS AND ALUMNI PURPOSE Associated with the thought of purpose are such words as thoughtful minds, res- olutions, aims, sincerity, and determination. It is disappointing and painful to see a youth who lacks moral earnestness, with only a nodding acquaintance with the nature of study, and who knows no interior impulse toward it. Real accomplishments stem from earnest purpose and thoughtful planning, follow- ed by supreme effort and energy expended in one all-important direction. We must feel the agony of strong purpose, agony that is satisfied with nothing less than the utmost answer to its will—namely, accomplishment. Yes, it is easy to be inert, doze in a chair, read an assignment half-heartedly, or be late to class. It is easy to drift downstream, to sink mentally and morally by the mere force of gravity. But to be awake, alive, to study, to work, to swim upstream, to rise in thought and feeling into the realm of freedom and power--these qualities require purpose that has the tenacity of the power that will at last crystallize into sat- isfying reality. If you, as students and graduates, have lacked purpose, then your rewards will be flimsy and your tokens of honor will ring with a hollowness that will echo unpleasantly in the years to come. If, by the same reasoning, your purposes are sincere, and you have put forth honest and genuine effort, then your rewards will be strong and your tokens of honor will ring genuinely true and full to the end of time. Remember too, that the best results of your work are not recorded on the exami- nation paper, but upon the pages of your own character. In the positive life we advance toward the light, and the shadows of our failures and defeats fall behind us. Character is elevated and ennobled by the continued pressure of high and noble motives. Let us build companionship with great thoughts, consciousness of the feelings and rights of others, elevation of aims, positive will, infallible certainty of good and ever improving inner life. These are the values of which you may ever be proud. Sincerely yours, E. A. Van Atta MRS. LLOYD, Secretar D. C. FAST Ohio State B.S. in Education, M.A. Science HELEN ORLYK B.G.S.U. It's been nearly ten years since we graduated from old N.B.; my, doesn't time fly? I was home for the Holiday season. I really enjoy a visit back to North Baltimore now and then; it gives me a chance to catch up on all the news. I see you didn't make it, but I suppose you are rushed for time. I was reading the New York Times on the way home, and I saw where one of your latest operas was being put on at the Metropolitan; gee, doesn't it give you a wonder- ful feeling? By the way how do you like living in New York? Well, since you didn't get home and probably won't for a while, I'll have to write you all the latest news about our old classmates. Well, first let's start with the classmates that lived down in our end of town, you know, the Second Street Gang. The gang finally broke apart. Leona is now running some cute little dress Shop called. Madame Leones. She goes to New York quite often on buying trips. Of course, you know Jackie finally ended up marrying Dave Sponsler, who now has part interest in the Bank. David was going to take up engineering, but it seems something changed his mind. The Seilers, Cherie and Dick, are the proud owners of a brand new farm, and it’s just beautiful. I guess farming keeps them pretty busy. But, aside from farming, they're also raising four children. I didn't get a chance to see or talk to Joyce, but Cherie tells me she's Head Nurse at St. Vincents Hospital in Toledo. You know she never married. Well, that's what finally became of the Second Street Gang ; now to the rest of our classmates. Ann Sesok now has a TV show of her own. It's all music, mostly accordian, but Bill Leonard was her guest the other night. He's touring the world singing with the Showboat troupe. Ruth Echelberger took a different slant on life and decided she would also further her singing career instead of getting married. Janice Whipple is Ruth's private secretary—she answers all her fan mail. Speaking of marriage, remember how Nancy Zurcher (Francisco) was secretly married, and no one knew. You know, nothing like keeping up with the Wingates (Sandra and Floyd) who were also secretly married. Let's see, who else got married? Oh, Peachie and Jim have twins—a boy that looks just like Peachie and a girl that looks just like Jim. Then there's Mary Ann and Charlie, they are still farming and raising children, they have four girls and they all look and act just like Mary Ann, (poor Charlie). Oh, and Marilyn Laney fell in love with some traveling salesman and they ran off and got married recently. Paul Wymer is now running a big Cloverfarm store down on the corner where the Food Center used to be. George Myers was running the Food Center, but it went bankrupt, so George retired. I guess he went to Professor Luse and he couldn't help him out. David is Professor at Harvard University. Writing about Professor Luse reminds me--Sue De Arment is now First Woman Mayor of Toledo and this is her third term in office. George's retiring makes me think of Jeff Boudrie. Some long lost heir of Jeff's died and left him a fortune; as a result he now is a millionaire and no longer has to work. (And Jeff always was so ambitious.) I heard Albert Leaf was out of a job so he went to Jeff. He’s Jeff's chauffeur and all Jeff's cars are, you guessed it, Chryslers. I suppose you've heard or read about Bunk Gerdeman; he's been the big sports hero down at Notre Dame. Orley and his family live near the campus not too far from the university. You know Bunk and Orley always had to be together for moral support. Oh, and did you read about Fred Brumbaugh win- ning the Heavy Weight Championship of the World? And, Dave Mumy is running in the Midget Auto races again, he won so many times already. I guess he had to build an extra room on his Club house to put all his trophies in. Well, now back to the quieter members of the class.- Remember Bob Bowers and Bob Hillard? They are now publishing the Toledo Blade. Bob Hillard does the cartoons and Bob Bowers supervises. Dean Simon and John Smith are still farming and have two of the best farms around here, and they're both happily married. John Monasmith is also farming, just a small farm, but it gives him something to do. He's still a bachelor and just as big a flirt as ever. I've been writing you how everything has grown. Well-Hammansburg is the biggest suprise of all, so big that they now have a mayor, and, he’s none other than Mike Leonard. Whew, I'm just about all written out, so I had better say au revoir (good- bye) for now. Write me soon, and good luck on your new opera. It is founded upon the principle of service to others—in the school, the local community, the nation, and among children abroad. The Junior Red Cross has been an active organization in our school for many years. It is composed of a representative from each of grades four through twelve. All boys and girls may enroll for membership, but they enroll as school groups, not as individuals. In the past we have filled gift boxes for overseas, made gifts for hospitals and homes for the aged in our own country, and last year we established a fund to buy equipment for the First-Aid Room in our school. These five girls have worked in the principal's office during this school year. At different periods in the school day, they have recorded high school attendance, they have typed letters or reports, and they have willingly and cheerfully performed other small tasks in connection with the routine which is a part of the office. The only compensation they receive is a thank you and this page is intended as a public acknowledgment of the fine voluntary work these girls have performed. It is. But as the picture was taken, the diamond-tipped bit had just broken the world’s record. It was entering a brand new “classroom”—nearly 4 miles underground. The Ohio Oil Company had sent it there, at a cost of SI,500,000, to find out if there are new sources of oil waiting at depths never before explored. As these words are written, it is not yet known whether or not this well will ever produce any oil. But it’s sure to produce something even more im- portant: knowledge. New knowledge. And so long as we live in a country where indi- viduals and companies have the incentive to search for new knowledge ... to find the new way, the better way . . . this nation will continue to move forward. For progress comes from pioneering . . . from a constant search with minds and dollars ... to find what is waiting to be found. It comes from attending “classrooms” that are as vast as our own minds ... as big as our lifeti The OHIO OIL Company JIMISONS SWEET SHOP Your Friendly Store Ice Cream, Candy Confections of All Kinds.
