Now here's what you do ... johnny Harrison manhandles a defender, as Frank Fortune carries With twelve returning lettermen from last years Con- ference Championship Team, the 1974 Varsity Yellow jackets combined excellent coaching, an exciting offense and a big-play defense to produce North Augusta's most successful season since 1961's State Championship squad. At the start the jackets had their problems, having lost many fine players from last year's team, including 10 starting linemen and one of the best backfields in the area. But Head Coach Hubert Morris made good use of his talented Seniors, and more than adequately filled the open spots. N.A.'s first opponent was Westside, and the game was never in doubt as Didier Norris streaked 70 yards on the second play of the year for a T.D. james McKie scored three touchdowns and the jackets swamped the hapeless Patriots 32-0. On their next outing, the Morris- men dealt old rival Richmond its only regular season loss, avenging last year's narrow defeat. N.A. next won a bout with Butler, both teams being scoreless until QB Pat Collins scored the lone TD in the final period. Thus, we completed our Georgia Season with a perfect slate. After disposing of previously undefeated, untied, and unscored-upon Lexington, the jackets began their con- ference play by bombing Airport, and then travelled to Brookland-Cayce and emerged the upset victim of a fired up Bearcat squad. But NA came back to beat Irmo, and then used two last minute interceptions by Collins to turn back a determined Orangeburg-Wilkin- son team. After a defensive battle with Columbia, the jackets faced arch-enemy Aiken. Trailing 9-8 going into the fourth quarter, North Augusta rallied for three touch- downs, the last TD coming as the clock ran out. The jackets finished 9-7 for the regular season, 5-1 in con- ference play, and for the second year in a row, had won the region title. Westside story. sports!23
