MESSAGE Enom THE editvr Our parents have always told us that our high school years are the best years of our lives. We, the senior class of l955, seemed to realize this from the time we began this year. We were serious in all our undertakings and have shown to the faculty, parents, administration, and trustees that we do appreciate all the help and guidance which they have most gener- ously given. REYNARD A N D 6aAineAA manager . . . Though many of us have participated in various school activities, we feel that we have not given our very utmost to N.A.H.S. So, as we finish our senior year at North Augusta High School, we appeal to the students returning here next year to take up where we left off and continue with renewed effort. We wish all of you the greatest success, and hope you cherish your i955 SANDSPURS as a remem- brance of your best years at N.A.H.S. EDITOR 0-E BUSINESS MANAGER E FED TE TS OPENING . STILLWELL Principal of Senior High School Dear Seniors, lt is my sincere hope that you will continue to bring as much ioy to those with whom you come in contact in later years as you have to those of us who have had the privilege of dealing with you here. For your intelligence, your consideration, your cooperation, your loyalty, and your integrity, we are truly thankful. As you go out from this school, you will need to put to use all the fine traits which you have shown here. Please work towards making the world a better place just as you have helped make this school better for having passed this way. Congratulations, and the best of everything to all of you. Cordially, Principal MR. PAUL KNOX Area Superintendent To The Class ot 1955 Greetings: Your entire high school career has been spent on the periphery of the construction of the world's largest fissionable materials plant of the Atomic Energy Commission. The observing graduate must have said again and again and again with signifi- cant meaning, To Be, Or Not To Be? Certainly, this sober question has led each of you to realize that the material and spiritual forces are out of balance in the world today. My wish for each of you is that you may reach the heights of mankind's ideal and attain your own most vital inspiration. May you be sustained to tread upon the high places, without giddiness and without fear, and may you walk these high roads of life in the fellowship and peace of God. From fun we've had, joys we've shared Triumphs and heartaches too, Though we're leaving North Augusta, Our love remains with you. When as bewildered freshmen, We needed someone as a guide, Our beloved teachers Helped us to decide The right from wrong, the false from true, And always to do our part, lt was they who helped us realize They had our interests at heart, Our sophomore and our junior years Held much enjoyment too. And last New Year's found us, In a school brand new. ,run FEATURE WRITERS Miriam Knox, Histor ian, Warrcn Hair, , ' L Projnhtrlg Nancy Q Shcaly, Poet, Lawyer, XX Hal Jacques, Lawyer. I o,' l I . 1 21 tml 0 O UUH LIVES . It asked our happiest time at school, lt would be quite hard to say, For could we forget Junior-Senior, Or producing our junior play? The friendships made within your walls We'll keep dear in our hearts. And with tear-filled eyes we'll silently say We'll miss you when we part. As we sing the Alma Mater, And in song our voices blend, ln our hearts we'll all be hoping, That we shall meet again. Yes, there were many trying moments, ln spite of work combined with play. And at times we became discouraged, But this l'd like to say When we get a little older, We're sure to realize Those days spent at North Augusta Were the best days ot our lives, NANCY SHEALY Class Poet '55 Jwhfc . YE H5 UF GREAT PHUGHESS.. September l95Ol The dreams of the Class of '55 were at last a reality, for we crossed the street to enter high school. Little did we realize the work and play the following five years had in store for us. Kay Kennedy starred as president to lead us across the stage of our sub-freshman year. Her supporting cast included Janice Whitlaw, vice-president, Betty How- ard, secretary, and Warren Hair, treasurer. Our nom- ination for queen attendant was given to Margaret Kelly. Cheers were led by Margie Fairbrother as the North Augusta football team that fall marched to victory and gained the title of Upper State Champions. After a gay summer vacation we returned to school as full-fledged freshmen. Now we really belonged and everyone knew we were around. Bill Robbins was chosen class president, Carlton Weeks, vice-president, and Janice Whitlaw, secretary-treasurer. Queen at- tendant for the annual P.T.A. Halloween Carnival was Guinelle Jones. Nancy Shealy represented us as freshman cheerleader. The calm, day by day routine of our daily activities was jolted by the announcement in November that Uncle Sam would build a billion dollar Hydrogen Bomb Materials Plant in our vicinity. Our sophomore year began with greatly increased enrollment because of the immigration of children of employees at the Savannah River Project. Classes, friendships, football games, and parties filled our lives. Nancy Shealy was our queen attendant at the first annual Homecoming football game, and Marcia Adams led cheers for the great football team which won the distrizt championship. With the construction of a long-dreamed-of gymnasium, basketball became a popular sport at North Augusta High School. A complete physical education program was begun. Mar- garet Kelly was elected secretary-treasurer of the Stu- dent Council. Kenneth Mink led us as class president. September l953, found us jolly juniors - 77 strong. We had fun as we worked, grew, and devel- roped physically, mentally, and socially. Kenneth Mink was again elected class president with Marcia Adams, vice-president, Reynard Corley, secretary, and Beverly Smith, treasurer. Marcia Adams and Gloria Wise were made cheerleaders, and Harriett Johnson was crowned queen at our Homecoming football game. This year proved to be a very eventful one for us. On January l3, l954, we moved from our cherished building on Carolina Avenue with its hallowed mem- ories of friends, classes, and events to our modern new building on the Old Edgefield Road. To us it seemed that we were leaving a way of life. Quickly, however, our new building gained our respect and ad- miration, its halls now hold memories that will linger with us always. Chosen for scholastic achievements, the Junior Marshals were Marcia Adams, Joan Al- toonian, Nancy Hemphill, Betty Howard, Miriam Knox, Kenneth Mink, Janice Whitlaw, and Gloria Wise. Kenneth Mink was vice-president of the Stu- dent Council. The school paper, THE YELLOW JACKET, was edited by Janice Whitlaw. Our junior play, a hilarious three-act comedy, SPOOKY TAV- ERN, proved a great success. Its cast included Nancy Shealy, Miriam Knox, Carlton Weeks, Margaret Kelly, Clinton Tyler, Gloria Wise, Reynard Corley, Ronald Swafford, Kenneth Mink, Betty Howard, and Warren Hair. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was a gala occasion. With distinction Nancy Hemphill represented North Augusta as District J.H.A. treasurer. Janice Whitlaw and Miriam Knox went to Girls' State in Columbia: Kenneth Mink and Reynard Corley were elected to attend Boys' State. And then came September l954l Could it be that our senior year was at hand? Pleased with the lead- ership of Kenneth Mink, we again elected him presi- dent of our class. Nancy Hemphill was chosen vice- president, Marie Griffin, secretary, and Janice Whit- law, treasurer. Once again, Marcia Adams and Gloria Wise were our cheerleaders. Reynard Corley ably directed student affairs as president of the Student Council. Royalty was in our midst, for Gloria Wise became Homecoming queen of l954. On November 2, l954, a great date in our lives, we received our cherished North Augusta High School rings. For good citizenship the D.A.R. award was presented to Janice Whitlaw. MISS-Hl-MlSS, elected to represent us at Winthrop College, was Miriam Knox. The biggest task of our high school career was the publishing of our yearbook, SANDSPURS. Reynard Corley, edi- tor-in-chief, under the capable leadership of Miss Frances Todd, worked with staff members to publish a fine annual. Janice Whitlaw was named valedic- torian and Nancy Hemphill salutatorian. Our class has had the unusual distinction of wit- nessing within our high school career an historical accomplishment that normally requires a generation or more, namely, the doubling of the enrollment of the entire school area. lt is worthy to note that our enrollment in l95O was l,95O pupils, today, in -1955 it is 3,600. Accompanying this increase has been a corresponding expansion in physical facilities. Seven new school buildings, costing approximately two mil- lion dollars, have been completed and occupied. The members of the Class of i955 are aware that Super- intendent Paul Knox and trustees, at a great personal sacrifice, accomplished this Herculean task enabling us to complete, uninterrupted, our education accord- ing to the high standards of the North Augusta High School. STUDE EUUNCIL OF THE STUDENTS AND FOR THE STUDENTS The Student Council, the voice of the students, is made up of representatives from each home room, the officers, and a faculty adviser, In order to be a home- room representative, a student must have a B aver- age for the past semester and be elected by his fellow classmates. The homeroom representatives and the rep- resentatives-at-large can serve for only one semester. The officers serve for the whole year. Among the many undertakings of the Council for the enjoyment of all students were the installation of the water coolers at each end of the first floor hall, the 'WQ3 V M homecoming game, and the Christmas sock-hop. Throughout the year the Student Council was unceas- ing in its efforts to promote the interests of the student body and bring about an even better relationship be- tween them and the faculty. During National Education Week and before the Christmas holidays we made projects depicting these two events. At Christmas we also sang carols and gave gifts to shut-ins. When the Mardi Gras was being held in New Orleans we, too, had one. Meetings were held in French and interesting facts were learned about French history and customs. This was surely one of our most successful years. LE EEHELE FRANCAIS THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS WE WILL SEEK HIGHER THINGS The purpose of the M.H.A. was to study the ways ot ancient Rome and the contributions of the Romans to modern civilization. The inexperience of the N.A. boys was evident as Bamberg scored early, then the local boys snapped out of it and stiffened, stopping the Raiders for the rest of the game. Although the Jacket defense held, the offense could not move against o stubborn Bamberg team. NORTH AUGUSTA I2-McCORMICK 0 The following Friday night, September lO, the Mc- Cormick Panthers visited North Augusta. After driving across for two quick scores, the offense lost its get up and get and failed to go against a fired-up Panther eleven. Improvement was shown over the previous week, and the fans held out hope for a successful season. NORTH AUGUSTA 7-AIKEN 0 A smoother-working Yellow Jacket squad met and upset a favored Aiken team on September l7. From the opening kickoff, the game was controlled by NA, The offense ran well and an iron-clad defense stalled the Green Hornets. Even though the home boys scored only once, there was no doubt that the team had come a long way in two weeks. NORTH AUGUSTA I3-CATHOLIC HIGH 32 The Yellow Jackets crossed the river to meet defeat at the hands of a revenge-minded Irish team on Satur- day night, September 25. From the start of the game, Catholic rolled over NA. and scored easily. Not until the final quarter did the NA. boys wake up as they passed for two touchdowns, NORTH AUGUSTA 33-JOHNSTON 13 Rebounding from Catholic, the N.A. team trampled on out-classed Bear squad on Friday, October l. Coach Gualt emptied the bench as the Jackets rolled over John- stan, and every member played well. R sq 4 2 35 J 5 NORTH AUGUSTA 6- BATESBURG-LEESVILLE 21 A small, but fast B-L team surprised the Yellow Jackets with several scores on October 8. Again it was not until late in the game, that the Jackets began to click. The passes seemed to pay off whenever the ground attack stalled, NORTH AUGUSTA 0-L.B.C. 30 A determined Lion squad from the Valley vis- ited North Augusta and ground out an easy victory. After two early breaks, which the alert Lions turned into scores, the Jackets found it impossible to stop them. This Friday night, October l5, was by far the low-point of the season. NORTH AUGUSTA 34-GRANITEVILLE 0 The Yellow Jackets finally came into their own on October 22, as they scored a surprising upset over the two-touchdown favored Rocks. North Augusta ran up a total of 20 points before even running a play from scrim- mage. The local team did not let up as they pushed Graniteville all over the dusty turf. NORTH AUGUSTA 32- EDGEFIELD 6 On November 5, the tilt with Edgefield was played much as everyone expected. North Augusta scored early and ran up a quick score. From then on, the Jacket teams of '55, '56, and '57 took over and kept scoring. Though the game was enioyed, all the team and spec- tators were looking towards the next week's game with Walterboro. NORTH AUGUSTA I3--WALTERBORO 0 This contest, on November l2, the last game of the season, was a tribute to the team and coaches. With an early break turned into a touchdown, the Jackets took heart and scored again, while holding Walterboro to minimum gains. Everyone played his best game and avenged last year's defeat in Walterboro, The boys who played their last game for North Au- gusta were as follows: Don Garrett, halfbackg John Firby, tackle, Warren Hair, end, Hal Jaques, tackle, Joe Mc- Clellan, guard, Ken Mink, tackle, Eugene Overstreet, guard, Bobby Pettigrew, halfback: Jim Presnell, full- back, Cliff Walters, end, and Ronald Swatford, halfback. Let to Right: Kim Ledford Charles Britt, and Larry Bayn- ham BUYS' B!-XSHETB LL Though the l954 boys' basketball team lost Henry Cooper, Bobby Gresham, Joe McGlinchey, and Bob Hughes by graduation, the squad had young and talented material to bolster the returning five letter- men: Jerry Brown, Steve McMahon, Ken Mink, Larry Baynham, and Tommy Lowe. With the addition of three new men, Charley Britt, Don Garrett and Kim Ledford, the North Augusta Yellow Jackets were a team to be reckoned with. Coach Mooney Player, in his first year here, produced a squad featuring a fast break offense, which was more dangerous in the last quarter than in the first. The N.A. cagers posted a record of five wins and one loss before, in a run of bad luck, they lost three of four games. These three games were with impor- tant rivals-Aiken, Catholic High, and Barnwell. The loss to the latter eliminated North Augusta from the Central Savannah River Area Basketball Tournament. B A S E B L L A REBUILDING YEAR ln regular season play, the I954 Yellow Jackets posted a fine record by defeating Richmond, Graniteville, Catholic, Aiken, Edgefield, and l..B.C. North Augusta won the district Class A Championship and played Woodruff in the play- offs for the state baseball title, Woodruff won the best of three series, but only after a great fight by a determined crew of Yellow Jackets, Bowdre Bates, left-handed workhorse, pitched a great season and won most of the games played during the '54 year. Boys who played their final game were Bowdre Bates, Henry Cooper, Ed Gregory, Bobby Gresham, Dick Hobert, Joe McGlinchey, Bobby Pettigrew, Clint Tyler, and Charley Worrell. Because the SANDSPURS goes to press before the '55 season begins, there is some difficulty in predicting the out- come. But even though there is a shortage of pitching per- sonnel, there will be an aggressive group of players, who gained experience by playing American Legion Baseball, Re- turning from last year's winning nine will be Larry Baynham, Charley Britt, Jerry Brown, Bill Langley, Steve Mclvlahan, Ken Mink, Ralph Sapp, Cliff VValters, and Terrell Wiggins. GIRLS' BASHETB LL THE BEST IN THE HISTORY OF Although the girls have had only three years of basketball experience, they have established the repu- tation of a hard team to beat. The group showed this fact by defeating Jackson, L.B.C., Graniteville, Ninety- Six and Salley with comparative ease. Sporting a seven win-no loss record, the girls entered the l955 C.S.R.A. Tournament. The team was rated among the top outfits, and everyone had high hopes of win- ning a trophy. However, as fate would have 't th I 1 eY were eliminated in the second round by a heartbreak- THE SCHOOL ing, one-point loss to Bamberg. The girls firmly be- lieve that a team that won't be beat, can't be beat. Therefore, rather than lamenting the loss of the C.S.R.A. Tournament, they are working even harder in great anticipation for the State Tournament, As the annual goes to press, they look forward to games with Barnwell, Aiken, and Richmond Academy. Sen- iors on the team this year include Marie Griffin, Sonia Tyler, Miriam Knox, Margie Fairbrother, and Gloria Wise. 1 Q ' Y Left to Right: Pat Howe, Vir- ginia Knox, and Gloria Wise.
