Text from Pages 1 - 148 of the 1954 volume:

CHORUS Thy praise I sing to North Augusta! We must each goo different way. My love abides with thee, While in your walls you gave to me You have a heart's devotion, A gift I shall keep for aye. And forever my loyalty, My heart is bound by memory's chain Thy praise I sing, North Augusta Within each room and hall, My love abides with thee. Of my noble Alma Mater- Soon the parting time will come The fairest school of all. Mary Miller 1 Q - 14 90: the 1954 . . . Marguerite C Hammond The staff of the SANDSPURS takes great pride in dedi- cating this volume to one of North Augusta's most beloved faculty members, Mrs. Marguerite C. Hammond. During her years at North Augusta she has endeared herself to her students. Her friendliness, her humor, her willingness to help any student with classroom or extra- curricular activities will always be remembered. So it is with much pleasure that we dedicate this 1954 SANDSPURS to Mrs. Hammond, Whose light of influence will guide us for years to come. EDIE TIIJ .Xu i K ,Ma-we ew-fsf 5 ffl t Q MARY TURNER Editor KAREN THOMPSON Business Manager I S Though many students left our old Alma Mater with regret, the beauty and freshness of our spacious new building has capti- vated our love and loyalty. As time goes on, a progressively en- riched curriculum will offer students greater opportunities, by which they may develop their talents and abilities. New and broader vistas are being opened, and as we look to the future, we hope the students will accept the challenge given them. The Class of 1954 is the first to graduate from the new senior high school. We realize that N.A.H.S. did not become outstanding by itself, but is the culmination of years of work and planning by the trustees, administration, faculty, and parents. We, the seniors, deeply appreciate the effort expended to provide us with excellent educational facilities. May each student reach the goal to which he aspires May each one treasure his 1954 SANDSPURS 1 1 remembrance of his friends and achies ements in High School 10 BLE UF IIUNT ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY . IF YOU CAN CHOOSE GOOD BOOKS YOU CAN CHOOSE GOOD FRIENDS The Comwolei Club was made up of seventy-five members interested in helping other students to get the most out of the school library. These boys and girls aided in making read ing and research more fun by providing instructive displays and attractively covered books. The meetings, held monthly, provided the members with comradeship, pleasant work, and leisure. These three pastimes made up the name of the club. The main purposes of the club were to prepare the library in the new school for the students' use. to process new books and to repair old ones. OFFICERS BEVERLY SMITH ............ KENNETH MINK Jos MCCLELLAN TUCJKIE Guqrd NORTH AUGUSTA 'l2-BOYS' CATHOLIC 0 Next came the game that the sports-writers in Augusta are still talking about. The N.A, boys had upset in their eyes as they trotted onto the slippery turf that dreary night. The players and loyal fans left the field with the scoreboard reading: North Augusta 12-Catholic li. NORTH AUGUSTA 20-JOHNSTON 7 ln the contest with llohnston, substitutions were made freely and the re- serves moved the ball well against the Bears. The 20-7 score did not show the real difference between the teams, nevertheless it did display the Klackets' bench strength. NORTH AUGUSTA 7-BATESBURG-LEESVILLE 7 The Panthers from Batesburg-Leesville were next to invade Lions liield to attempt to take home the bacon.l' This light but highly spirited crew surprised everyone by tying a bewildered and over-confident band of hlackets, 7-7. NORTH AUGUSTA 28-l..B.C. 14 The North Augusta boys reached their prime when they played Langley-Bath- Clearwater the following Friday. After building up a 28-0 lead, the -lackets let up just a little, and L.B,C. scored two quick touchdowns. At this time the Black and Cold buckled down and were on the march again as the game ended. The final score was ZX-14. NORTH AUGUSTA 14-GRANITEVILLE 7 In front of a large homecoming crowd North Augusta built up a 14-U lead over Craniteville by halftime. However, the cockiness, which kept popping up throughout the season, showed up for an encore during the second half, and the ,lackets had to put on a beautiful goal-line stand to ice the game, 14-7. NORTH AUGUSTA 0-BARNWELL 0 Next, the battle between two of South Carolina's Class A giants was in the spotlight. Although the final score does not confirm this fact, the game was a highly explosive one with many long runs, precision blocking and kicking. Neither Barnwell nor North Augusta were able to push the ball over, howeverg and the game ended in a 0-U tie. NORTH AUGUSTA 33-EDGEFIELD 6 On the coldest night of the season the Black and Cold could not get rolling, and the score was 6-6 at halftime. North Augusta, with the fine fighting spirit that has always been present in ,lacket teams, did come back and give the Bulldogs a good licking, 33-6. Ciraduation, the misfortune which all coaches fear, hit North :Xugusta's basketball team a little harder than usual last vear. XVhen the current season began. the jackets found them- selves minus four of last vear's starting line-up. Lost to that dreaded annual occurrence were Buddv Nletz, Marcus Huff, and lim Holmes, while Kim Ledford moved across the Savan- nah River into Georgia. The '54 season was not only a period of rebuilding. where- bv manv capable cagers gained valuable experience. but also it was a time of accomplishment. The Black and Gold made a fine showing in the Central Savannah River Area Tourna- ment bv advancing to the semi-finals before being eliminated bv Ifdgefield. ln this tournament North Augusta won the most exciting game of the entire ten-dav program bv defeat- ing arch-rival Saluda.
