SUPERINTENDENT A landmark is defined both as a guide and also as an important event in one’s life. Your graduation from high school is a land- mark in the process of your education — a process that will con- tinue throughout your lifetime. For some of you, these high school years have been preparation for higher education of one form or another. For others — it represents the completion of your formal schooling. In either event, it is but a guide post, and your education — whether formal or informal — will continue. Democracy requires the highest de- gree of civic competence of its citizens. The more difficult the problems, the greater the need for a capable and intelligent citizenry. You need to strive to become a contributing part of America’s future — the most promising era in the history of mankind. To do so you must be prepared to exercise a more profound intelli- gence than any generation in history. The possibilities of equipping yourself for this inheritance are before you. 8 '
