CLASS HISTORY As the Class of l958 stands on the threshold of the future ut us umpossuble to keep thoughts of uet propulsuon Sputnuks and trups to the moon from unvadung our munds Before steppung forward unto the new unexplored world of speed and space however let us put our thoughts unto reverse for a whule and try to puece together the scattered memorues that represent our years at North Arlung on Caught un a whurl of enturely new actuvutues and unterests we spent many months of Seventh Grade Iearnung the ropes and found that changung classes was almost as much fun as goung to a cur us especually when we had new afternoon sublects each markung peruod For at least three days our lunes would unvaruably get tangled Luzzue Treuber was one of the first of us to become a Iutterbug expert durung the noon hour dancung sessuons and many of our athletuc boys partucupated un basketball and tumblung durung that same peruod Glee Club and art classes were held at 8 am once a week for ambutuous students whose unterests lay un those fields Havung successfully presented one play at assembly un whuch Sam Denslers short heught was emphasuzed many of us spent two months rehearsung dulugently for a second one entutled Sprung Fever On the mornung ut was to be presented Nancy Raub came down wuth the mumps and the whole ass mbly was called off On her first attempt Barbara Kukla placed thurd un the school un the Magazune Campaugn thus begunnung her five year career as a wunner Cheerung our State Champuon basketball team on to vuctory partucupatung un our first May Day as Popo the Puppet and solucutung funds for the Cerebral Palsy Druve rounded out our first year at NAHS Eughth Grade ushered un the fad of gurls wearung dog collars on theur ankles and the presentatuon of another play un whuch Carole Sommers assumed the role of a teacher and Fran Macaluso spelled tauned by our class members that year were Ethel Scholess placung first un the Bergen County Spellung Bee and seventh un North Jersey and Aluce Campusu s election as Presudent of the Junuor Hugh Student Councul Rotary trups to the Charm Candy Company and the U N and the Dramatucs Club trup to see Carmen un the form of an operetta were among our first educatuonal excursuons Lughtung the gym as Glow Worms for our second May Day and plannung our schedules for the followung four years were the actuvutues that brought Eughth Grade to an en As Freshmen we elected George Jenkuns Class Presudent Lous McGhee Vuce President Larry Reu chord Secretary and George Jerk Treasurer Wuth these officers at our helm we set out to carve a nuche for our class un the NAHS Hall of Fame by presentung our first dance Cupuds Poraduse Fuve munute orals un Mrs McCords Englush I class proved nerve wrackung to many of us especually MaryAnn Stoucovy who stood up un front of the class and then completely forgot everythung she had planned to say The first Vu Queens Cavalcade of Sports was held wuth Marulyn Clark leadung Perky Freshmen un theur unsuccessful bud for first place Our freshman football team showed uts potentualutues y scorung 7 wuns I t and ony 2 loss s basketball Charlue Murkofsky was the first freshman un the hustory of North Arlungton Hugh to be used as a substutute un a varsuty game The newness of havung unduvudual schedules carryung report cards from class to class and beung largely undependent proved to be hugh pounts of our first year un Hugh School Dusectung frogs and busectung angles for us ut vuce versa'7J marked the begunnung of our sopho more year un buology and geometry classes respec tuvely Many squeals were heard from squeamush gurls as the work wuth scalpels began but a Buology Trup to the Bronx Zoo and Botanucal Gardens compensated un some way for the agony of the ordeal Doug Sopers leapung frog was an out standung specumen Wuth Charlue Murkofsky as Class Presudent we presented our second dance Tropu cana 58 whuch attracted many guests who were unterested un meetung the Mystery Sunger Mr X never showed up The Bonnue Lassues of Games Nught fame dudnt have enough pounts to win for the evenung but we were all proud of Duana lsak sens beung awarded a whute blazer for havung drawn the best publucuty poster Two honors came to our school that year when our basketball team once agaun became Group I State Champrons and and when the Vukung Saga wuth Naomu Kraus as Busuness Edutor was uudged the best school paper un New Jersey North Arlungton Hugh School made uts football comeback at the begunnung of our Junuor Year by establushung a reco d of 5 wuns and 3 losses Success also came to us un basketball when we agaun won the Group I State Champuonshup and ln track when Joe Francello became the State Champuon Muler settung a new state record of 427 Even the gurls got unto the athletur act portroyung rough tough football players un the Vu Queens Cavalcade of Sports Cathy Lus was our memorable enthusiastic coach In class we waded through U S Hustory 'I wuth John Olandt as star debater Junuor Guudance Conferences wuth Muke Pomerantz chief question asker and Career Paper Wrutung wuth Nancy Raub and Bob Render receuvung top honors Among the many places vusuted on field truos were Stevens lnstutute Fort Dux and the New York Stock Exchange abundance of food served to all guests Under the durectuon of Mrs Gebbue and our officers Charlue Murkofsky Luz Treuber Lous McGhee and John Olandt we presented our thurd class dance Ara buan Nughts and the Junuor Senuor Prom held ID the Hotel Suburban Among the members of our class who partucupated un the new style May Day were Aluce Campusu sungung lm Just a Gal Who Cant Say No Dot Oleuarczyk guvung her rendutton of Fush Got to Swum and Tom Esposuto and Dom Juno appearung un a sextet that sang By the Seo Then along came exams thus ended our Junuor Year Thus year our Senuor Year has been as nearly perfect as we could ever umagune and perhaps ut has been even a but better Our undefeated football team won the Group ll Sectuon I State Champuon shup and the basketball and track teams piled up C sumularly envuable record Judy Frazuer and Joan Sumpson Co captauns Muckue Ruecke Lynne Canaley and all the other cheerleaders dud a fine 'ob of supportung our teams throughout the seasons At our final class dance Sulver Sleughrude Presudent George Jeck announced Lous McGhee to be our lovely Queen of the May and she was crowned at one of the gayest May Days ever Our never to be forgotten Senuor Trup Mothers Day Tea, the Junuor Senuor Prom Awards Assembly Class Night and finally Graduatuon utself have brought us up to the present as we e'1d our sux year stay un North Arlungton Hugh School We depart wuth muxed emo tuons anxuous to go on to new and greater things but sad at the prospect of leavung
