Ooilpall 1950 The Viking football varsity, led by co-captains George Venturini and Roger Wiseman with six other seniors, displayed commendable spirit, fight, and sportsmanship all season long despite a phenomenal run of bad breaks and an unimpressive record. Outstanding in the team's efforts were: George Venturini, co-captain and voted the most valuable player, who closed out a brilliant four year career with the varsity, despite suf- fering a three week lay-off due to a rib injury, was the team's second highest scorer making 39 points and was one of the team's best players on defense, that the school ever had, Roger Wiseman, light, but courageous, fullback and safetyman, Bill Kelley, a big junior, whose powerful running and passing highlighted the Viking's play all season and racked up five points, passing for two more points and maintaining a 6.5 yard gain per carry average, Charles Waiver, big tackle, who was voted the most outstanding linesman award for his fine play, Tom Schultz, light, but always fighting and hustling left guard, who was voted the most improved player award. Others who stood out were: seniors, Carl Landers, Tom Stephens, and Stan Wisiniewski, captain-elect for l95O, Earl Evans, Tony Bosco, Bob Francis, Bob Hauer, Sam Colino, Malcolm Ferguson, Walter Eckhardt, and Bill Bright. The coaching staff deserves much credit, not only for building a well coached, well drilled team out of a predominantly sophomore squad, but in building character, and making good citizens also. The classic examples of the boy's spirit is the Metuchen game, which the team dedicated to Billy August, and the banquet given in honor of the Boosters Club at the end of the season. The banquet, sponsored by the team at their own expense, was very successful and served as awards night in addition to honoring the Boosters for their part in athletics at North Arlington. 46 C ar! The team, an ironman contingent of six boys, boasts three seniors. Toward the end of a just fair season the boys suddenly began to play excep- tionally good ball and won three out of their last four regular games. They continued this torrid pace in the state tournament with a 66-45 massacre ol Hasbrouck Heights, then humbling powerful Fort Lee, Bergen County League and defending state champions, by a 47-42 count The Fort Lee game marked the high spot of Q accuracy was the 8 in a thrilling, seeesaw battle, but in the final against Roselle Park it just wasn't Fort Lee game the boys hit 2l for Sl for a terrific 4l9'b the season and the Narls' success. Their deadly shootin main factor in the defeat of Carteret. The score was 63-5 our day ln the shooting average. They were just off their game in the final and lost Sl -44 Nevertheless, the team deserves much credit for their great spirit, hustle, sportsmanship, and fine play through a most successful season Captain Carl Landers was the team's high scorer Carl, a strong, 6'2 forward, poured 254 points through the hoop during the regular season fora l4 point average. He added 9l points in five tournament games, and an i8 point-per-game average to finish the season with 345 points in 23 games, clos ing out a brilliant varsity career, At the season's close, Carl, was named to sev- eral all-county and all-state fives, and received an invitation to play for the Bergen County high school all state against a similar Hudson County team in a post-season affair, Another senior who excelled this season was Stan Wis- niewski, His rebound work, floor play, and speed, as well as his accurate shooting, highlighted many Viking victories, Wisniewski made 203 points dur- ing the season 72 in the tournament a 275 for 23 game total. ln the tourna' 48 1 I4 I x f R, lg' ,Af J. Colamedici, one of the most spirited boys on the team, is 6 feet tall and very agile, Dittmar, a lanky 6'3 , played quite commendably all season. Tom Schultz, a senior, played brilliantly in his reserve role. Against Hasbrouck Heights, Tom broke the game open by scoring 8 vital points within five minutes. The junior varsity, coached by Mr. Miller, displayed fine spirit and should yield the varsity some capable replacements next season. FRONT ROW: P Corcoran, A. Hunter, J Dinesmore, B. Jones, J. Led by captain Bob Hatch and seniors Bill Adam, Ken Ingalls, and Jim Alexan- der, the squad has done a commendable job in their efforts this season. Joe Ryan, Pete Corcoran, and Charlie West were also outstanding in the tearh's effort. Wisniewski is a flashy fielder and Davis is noted for his fine arm and dangerous hitting. Bill Clark is a power hitter and also has a powerful accurate arm. Ray Yodlowski, a junior, and Joe Lavin, a sophomore, are the Narls' first line pitchers, while sophomore Tony Bosco is the number one catcher.
