In the early fall, just as we were getting used to the idea of being 'almighty' seniors, we saved up a couple of weeks' allowance and went on a trip to Morristown to study the heroic doings of Washington and his troops, We saw his living quarters and inspected the rough barracks where the men passed the winter. Then he can get a bird's-eye view of our whole athletic program. All right, that sounds interesting, agreed Mrs Wright. The three walked to the office where Mr Wright had a chance to read the following re port North Arlington and Scotch Plains Fight to 6 6 Draw were the headlines of the STU DENT PRINTS The game marked the open ing of the football season for both teams Sparked by outstanding playing the Narls broke through the much heavier line of Scots The game was closely contested from start to finish North Arlington s touchdown was the only touchdown scored on the Scotch Plains field since Coach Frawley came to that school three years ago Point Pleasant proved to be an easy vic tory as North Arlington won 33 O Point Plea sant did not threaten the North Arlington goal line at any time Adequately supported by the band twirlers and cheerleaders in their new uniforms, the team tore up and down the field to score whenever possible. At Wood-Ridge, seeking to extend 'ts string of victories in football, the team left the field on the short end of l4-6 score. Yes, we lost to Wood-Ridge, but it might be added that this was the first defeat for the Narls since the Hasbrouck Heights game in l939. Fumbles and penalties slowed the progress of the Vikings and hastened the advance of the Ridgers. North Arlington's Vikings once again regained their footing in the win column by beating Highland Park l3-7. Our first touche down came in the first half. Highland Park fought back gamely during the second half As a result they scored. The Narls again went out in front during the third quarter, Passes, line plays, defensive work, and offensive running by the Vikings prevented any serious bid for victory on the part of the Highlanders, North Arlington continued to hold its re- gained position of victories by trouncing Ber- genfield High School 37-l-4. Everyone of the Vikings squad had an opportunity to get into action during the game. lt was during the sub- stitution periods that Highland Park had a chance to score. Traveling to Hasbrouck Heights's field, the Vikings held the highly favored Hasbrouck Heights team 7-7 in a close battle, Both teams scored during the first quarter and then held Starting in the upper left-hand corner and reading clockwise: A little serious consultation before the game. Footwork by the coach. The team steps high and handsome. Hang on, don't let him get away! Not the result of an argument, just a trick to cut down glare. The each other for the duration of the game, Hasa brouck Heights threatened during the third and fourth periods of the garner Much credit must be given to the Narls' line for blocking these scoring threats. North Arlington continued their win- ning streak by defeating Mountain Lakes 27-O. Mountain Lakes, a newcomer on this year's schedule, never made any serious bids in the Narls' territory during the entire game. After the first touchdowns were made, Coach Niel- sen withdrew his first team and used his re- serve strengthy even the Junior Varsity got some experience lf the first team had been left in the game, the score would have been much higher On Thanksgiving Day, adding one more victory, North Arlington's Vikings completed another successful football season with a 2O'l2 score against Harrison drum maiorette leads the twirlers and the band It feels good to relax after practice. At Christmas and Thanksgiving we assemble baskets of food for needy families and help our community and school in many ways. Why, this year alone the Tri-Y gave an alumnae dinner, a party with the Hi-Y, and many other social events, Let's look at the next club, the Hi-Y. I can tell you about that, said Albert, We, too, collect baskets of food, donate money to charitable organizations, and hold social meet- ings. Remember what fun we had at the Hi-Y Barn Dance? questioned Nancy. We all came dressed in farmer's clothes and danced the Virginia Reel, The next club is the Junior Red Cross. 'll can guess what they do, V but why does the club's name begin with junior? inquired . Mr. Wright looking perplexed. Why, Dad, the Junior Red Cross is composed of girls who are under the age limit of the regular Red Cross organization. These girls knit sweaters, socks, and all the other articles needed so much for the war effort, answered Nancy. l As a matter of fact they do everything they can to help the senior members, broke in Albert. I suppose they play for assemblies and entertainments. Well, they've just been organized, rea plied Albert, and haven't played in public yet. They're working hard and have promised to play for our graduation. Here's the next club in the book, the Honor Society. The Honor Society , remarked Nancy, has done numerous things for us. Each stu- dent has a service to do for the school. Re- member the Welcome Dance and the Red Cross Benefits? Indeed l do. We were able to help out a worthy cause and still have a good time. So they really honor students for scho- larships nowadays. When I was in school such young people were laughed at and made to feel that they were committed some sort of a crime. I guess times have changed. l'll say they have, exclaimed Albert. Why our dramatic club not only gives plays, but its members obtain actual experience in stagehand work, make-up artistry, and all the other phases of dramatics. Nancy turned a page, Here's a club that helps the junior high-ers to use their dra- matic ability to advantage. They have lots of fun presenting plays for their own pleasure and for the school. The tableau that the mem' bers gave at our Christmas party in assembly was lovely. Wait 'till you hear about the next club. l know you never had one like this in your school, Albert said. Why, what is it? Mr. Wright asked A Sub-Deb Club. That is a new one for me. Why, lots of defense industries are looking for girls who know a bit about tools, So they are. l guess this hobby club might serve very practical purposes. Now Dad, exclaimed Albert excitedly, here's a club we can enjoy talking about, The Chet's Club consists ot a group ot boys who really go to town when they try to cook a meal But, all jokes aside, put in Nancy see riously, those boys are really good.
