HALL TALK The four minutes between classes at N.A.H.S. are barely enough to gather books and get to class. However, we always seem to find some time to get in a little gossip — of course it’s not really gossip, in a school as intimate as North Andover, just about any news is old news. It’s amazing how much can be learned in such a short time. Last weekend’s events are always recounted on Mondays: who went to which party with whom, who got caught doing what, how much so-and-so drank, who cheated on whom, and other juicy encounters which are more quietly whispered. Flunked tests, fights with friends, incomplete homework assign¬ ments, and how it is increasingly difficult to get up each morning is all heard toward the middle of the week. Fridays are the days to catch it all! Football games, parties, dates, how much, when, where, who; the hallways are never quite as alive from lunchtime on on Fridays. Even the teachers seem to smile a bit more, though they exchange juicy stories in the confines of the teachers’ lounge. There’s no doubt about it, you learn more that is immediately applicable in four minutes in the hallway than you did all period in class.

US wins back America’s Cup. Merrimack Valley falls victim to a flood. Jim and Tammy Bakker are dethroned from the PTL ministry in scandal; N.A.P.D. arrest 57 teens for a beer bash; Gary Hart and Donna Rice hit the scandal sheets; Reagan fails with his first two choices for the Supreme Court; Gorbachev visits the US for summit talks; the 1988 presidential Campaign heats up; Biden is out of the race for misquoting; Baby Jessica is safely rescued from her back yard well. The Persian Gulf begins to stand out as a testing ground for war in the Middle East. Gary Hart re-enters the presidential race.
