' m M Hlr jtatJ m ■ The long and winding road that leads to your door j, will never disappear. I’ve seen that road before, it always leads me here, leads me to ybiiir door.” ' v- Xhe Beatles 0 INg 1646 E. Sharkey Reading Cerrtei N. Andower High School OVER public WORKS ;; , j, V i ALL ROADS LEAD “ROAD-n. an ordinary line of communication between different places, used by horses, travellers on foot, or vehicles.” Every day for four long years, we have travelled a road called high school; a common road that varies with the decisions we make. Whether it be the friends we choose, the classes we take, or the activities we participate in, the decision is our own. Since the freshman year, we have maneuvered the twists and turns of the aca¬ demic path, guided by signposts — our teachers. They have given us direction and motivation throughout our drive for knowledge, so that as June 1988 rolls around we can construct our own path. Our high school route will now diverge into our separate roads. Where we go from here is up to us, as we utilize the guidance and direction we have been given. Now is the time to forge our own destinations. As the ancient warrior Hannibal said, “I will find a way or make one.” And so must we . .. TO N.A. J 4 LETHALLY LATE You’re running a little late in the morning but think you can make it if you hurry. You save your make-up to put on in first period and skip breakfast — again. It’s 7:30 and you’re turning onto Osgood street, pass the police sta¬ tion, go one more block and OH LORD, there it is, you’ve heard about it, it’s happened to your friends, and NOW, it’s happening to YOU — about three- hundred cars and fifty buses are also trying to get into school — Great! You curse “those stupid speed bumps until 7:35 when you finally make into the driveway. Of course there are no parking spaces left and to aggravate you more, someone has taken up two spaces with his car. You fly over to the forbidden teacher’s parking lot and sprint across campus hoping to make it to homeroom — good luck! You hear the morning announcements as you run through the corridors. With ten seconds left in homeroom, you burst in and breathlessly plead your case with your homeroom teacher. She’s in a bad mood this morning too, and doesn’t feel like changing her attendance slip again, so you go down to the office, sign in, get a pass for first period and wait to be called down for your hearing. Because of the new tardiness rules, you know the afternoon will be spent in detention, and again you curse “those stupid speed bumps” for making you late — again! CAUTION Mothers and children were driven from their innocent play at Drummond playground on Sunday, September 27 at 1:00, when N.A. seniors invaded the territory in order to carry on an important tradition. Donned in red and black, the spirited class of 1988 showed no in¬ hibitions about saying “cheese.” CHILDREN AT PLAY PAIRanoia Is it love? A crush? Ask Dear Abby. Or better yet, ask your best friend to ask the desired object’s best friend. From that first freshman obsession (usually with an unattainable senior), to your last senior fling, love, passion and romance are on every student’s (and Mr. Sanford’s) mind. No one is immune — Cupid’s arrow strikes us all at one time or another. Everyone, it seems, is looking to be one-half of a couple. Some have been “going out” for years. They’re the ones you see kissing in the hallway and wearing each other’s class rings. Others go merrily from person to person — a week here, a month or two there, a few casual dates at a party. They make themselves the perennial topic of conversation among friends who apparently have nothing else to talk about: are they still dating? Didn’t I see her holding hands with_just last week? I heard they — well you know at Chris’ party. It continues perpetually. Of course there are also those you see mooning over unrequited love, carrying a torch for some uncaring soul for what seems to be forever. However it happens, and its sure to happen, that first love, crush, or futile obsession will be remembered every time you look back on the golden days of high school. TAKE A WALK Clowns speaking Spanish, dinosaurs studying psychology, and devils reading Shakespeare were not uncommon sights on October 30 at the high school. Halloween spirit abounded as pumpkins, caveman and ghouls swamped the cafeteria, posing candidly for photographs and eating some scary-looking lunches! ON THE WILD SIDE HALL TALK The four minutes between classes at N.A.H.S. are barely enough to gather books and get to class. However, we always seem to find some time to get in a little gossip — of course it’s not really gossip, in a school as intimate as North Andover, just about any news is old news. It’s amazing how much can be learned in such a short time. Last weekend’s events are always recounted on Mondays: who went to which party with whom, who got caught doing what, how much so-and-so drank, who cheated on whom, and other juicy encounters which are more quietly whispered. Flunked tests, fights with friends, incomplete homework assign¬ ments, and how it is increasingly difficult to get up each morning is all heard toward the middle of the week. Fridays are the days to catch it all! Football games, parties, dates, how much, when, where, who; the hallways are never quite as alive from lunchtime on on Fridays. Even the teachers seem to smile a bit more, though they exchange juicy stories in the confines of the teachers’ lounge. There’s no doubt about it, you learn more that is immediately applicable in four minutes in the hallway than you did all period in class. MEMORY LANE 1984 Marines are moved out of Lebanon. Protests for the Seabrook nuclear plant erupts. — Wendy’s comes out with “Where’s the beef?’’ commercials. — USSR boycotts Summer Olympics in L.A. — the first US woman Kathryn Sullivan walks in space; mini-skirts start up again. — Baby Fae receives a baboon heart; Doug Flutie receives Heisman Trophy; Bandaid releases “Do They Know It’s Christmas’’; The VCR hits the American public. 1986 Patriots lose Superbowl to Chicago Bears; Space Shuttle ex¬ plodes; cyanide laced Tylenol incidents.; Chernobyl nuclear disaster in USSR; Len Bias dies due to cocaine overdose one day after being drafted by the Celtics; Hands-Across America stretches from coast to coast; Celtics win 16th Championship; The Statue of Liberty turns 100; Harvard celebrates 350 years of higher education; Boston Red Sox lose the World Series in the seventh game. 1985 Tanning salons are all the rage; Madonna and Cindy Lauper debut as rock’s hottest women; Boston is rated second best metro area to live in in the US; Coke changes it’s formula; TWA flight 847 is hijacked; Live Aid; US senate joins in op¬ position against South Africa; Riots in Lawrence erupt when racial tension rises; US starts to try and ban certain rock music; Prince Charles and Lady Di visit New York; Halley’s Comet rides by. 1987 North Andover resumes using tap water. US wins back America’s Cup. Merrimack Valley falls victim to a flood. Jim and Tammy Bakker are dethroned from the PTL ministry in scandal; N.A.P.D. arrest 57 teens for a beer bash; Gary Hart and Donna Rice hit the scandal sheets; Reagan fails with his first two choices for the Supreme Court; Gorbachev visits the US for summit talks; the 1988 presidential Campaign heats up; Biden is out of the race for misquoting; Baby Jessica is safely rescued from her back yard well. The Persian Gulf begins to stand out as a testing ground for war in the Middle East. Gary Hart re-enters the presidential race. ADVISE AND CONSENT- Mrs. Meg Hibbard and friends. I t’s hard to believe that you went from lining us up in the gym to lining us up at the prom. In fact, you’ve helped us line up four outstanding years. Neither of you knew what you were getting into when you took on the job of advisors to the class of ’88, but it is now time to tell you just how we appreciate it and you. Our fundraisers, dances, and most of all our prom could never have succeeded without your guidance and advice. And for the students who worked with you closely, you played more than the role of our advisors — you were our friends. All the hard work seemed so easy when we had you to crack a joke or discuss a common problem. You have risen above the walls of the fieldhouse and touched each and every one of us with your talents and devo¬ tion — and for this we thank you from all our hearts. Thanks! 1 “DON’T LEAVE CLASS WITHOUT IT” T ravel at N.A.H.S. No, a student doesn’t need a VISA, but rather the ever wel¬ comed GREENPASS. Do you want the embarrassment of being caught without one? Live life to the fullest and travel down the halls in style. Having problems with Mr. Hamel? Flash him the GREENPASS and watch him wimper away. And the GREENPASS is accepted school¬ wide. Feel like a vacation in the exotic Foreign Language Resource Center? GREENPASS gets you there first class and virtually hassle- free. When teachers see you carrying the GREENPASS they’ll flash you a smile of respect and cater to your every wish. Or how about achieving new heights in the academic excellence. GREENPASS is your key to open the doors to power and knowl¬ edge. The world renown N.A.H.S. I.M.C. demands the quality and prestige of the GREENPASS. It will get you the recognition you want and the assistance you need. And they don’t accept American Express or white- lined paper! — Tim Howard i j s Dana Adam - Kevin Abernathy Jennifer A. With a new unlimited membership and an updated Constitution, the council held meetings every Wednesday morning, sponsored several dances, sold car¬ nations on Valentine’s day, and organized a “shadow” program to acquaint eighth graders with the high school. Led by President Joe Harb, Vice President Pam Seddon, Secretary Val Sobel, and Treasurer Mike Sullivan, the council set out to restore school spirit and pride. Headed by advisor Paul Spadafore and run by foun¬ ders Kim Yetman, Angie Spears and Renee Savage, the club has become a major outlet through which enthusiastic students can channel their abundance of school spirit and energy. By the end of September, students found their school enveloped in red and black before every game. The avidity of school reached its highpoint with the spectacular pep-rally production of “The Knights of the Round Table.” Yet the club was not calling it quits in November. They jumped out of the school and into the community with a Canned Food drive to benefit the hungry in the Merrimack Valley. The success of the club is due to the large number of dedicated students who have given their time. These devotees include our own cheerleaders and Annette Pierog and Nicole Dionne for their incredible artwork. Everyone agrees that the spirit club is a positive step in the quest for unity. The Club has not only made school spirit “outrageous” but also quite “contagious!” Activities INFORMING N.A.H.S. D espite a relatively inexperi¬ enced staff, the Squire pub¬ lished three issues this year. The co-editors of the Squire this year were Tim Howard, Jim Hurley and Tami Petronio. With assistance from their advisor, Mr. Gregoire, they managed to keep the students of NAHS informed of important happen¬ ings and controversial school issues such as; the tardy policy, faculty smoking, prohibition of the smoking area, and the unpopular speed bumps. The poems of Eliot. And now, the 1987 Bourbon Red. The high school’s literary magazine is a monumental anthology of eye-dazzling art and thought-provoking poetry and prose spawned from the minds of North Andover’s best and brightest. Every Tuesday in room 238 one can observe the group at work, reading, editing and pasting furiously. ' The Bourbon Red has an unconventional set-up in that seniors act as editors. As advisor Margaret Hannum.says, “The group for several years has decided not to have one per¬ son in charge, but for everyone to be responsible, and it has worked well.” Senior Amy Bailey uses Bourbon Red not only as a vehicle for literature but also as a means of displaying her artwork; her bold cover crowned the first issue of the new year. Of course, it is not only the seniors who count; with Heather Wolf and her peers on the horizon, Bourbon Red should be in good hands for a while to come. 1st Row: Jean Moneski, Gina Rossetti, Heather Wolf. 2nci Row: Jim Hurley, Lisa Clayton, David Dawson, Matthew Palmer, Mrs, Hannum. 3rd Row; Joe Sibol, Tim Howard. -N.A.H.S. All eyes focused on candidates for queen; Tara Joyce, Jaclyn Winning, Laura Johnson, Jen An¬ derson, Erin Morrissey, and Jen Nassar, and for King candidates: Joe Harb, Chris Marconi, Sean Connolly, Chris Kaddaras, and Doug Rogers. Tension was ripped by the tearing of the envelope. Announcer and Class Officer Tim Howard, toyed with the anxiety of a captivated audience and boldly pronounced . . . “The Reigning King and Queen for Homecoming 1988 is — Jen Nassar and Joe Harb.” rK-i ' ' CUPID’S DELIGHT- I t was definitely a hearts and flowers atmosphere that surrounded the 1988 Valentine’s Day dance, which was a great success for the Junior class. Highlight¬ ing the evening was the crowning of Valen¬ tine Queen Tami Petronio and her princesses Lisa Hannan, Barbara McElroy, and Lori Stephenson. Everyone owes their good times to Junior class advisors. Miss Lita Fernandez and Mr. Steve Sousa, who organized the event. Activities 115 CAN WE TALK? - A lthough many of us are lost for words most of the time, NAHS’s Speech Team never shuts up. Consistently plac¬ ing in all of the MFL tournaments they attend, NA certainly has a lot to brag about. Aside from their stupendously chilling rendition of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible as a multiple reading, Michele Gilbert and Tim Howard raided the radio broad¬ casting awards by stealing first and second places at virtually every meet. Maura McClung, better known as “the Holyoke Woman,” prides herself in her gold collection, consisting of numerous medals won for excellence in prose reading. Jim Hurley, still wandering aimlessly from category to category, has found fulfillment in both radio and prose, yet suffers severe humiliation with Liz Butler in their Less-than-Zero performance of Barefoot in the Park. Liz, seeker that she is, decided to throw a fit and pout her way to the 1 spot in children’s literature with her piece, Eloise. Alyssa Marchese, reeking of retro-sixties bohemia, gracefully accepted her victories in poetry reading all the year through. Joe Blandini, alias “the Sun,” has decided to quit the bunny act and move on to bigger and better things, namely prose reading. 1st ROW: Chris Marino. 2nd ROW: Chris Brogan, Liz Butler, Allyssa Marchese, Tim Howard. O ur NAHS Math Team has the innate ability, coupled with hard work and confidence, to be one of the top ten teams in the league. The team is blessed with four talented high scorers; Clement Chun, Mehool Patel, Mark Keegan, and Patrick Maurer, who intend to lead the team into State competition. The team has competed in the states for the past four years and plans to participate in the New England competition in late April this year as well. The two co-captains, Clement Chun and Mehool Patel, feel that the team is very beneficial, as students learn to cooperate and work together. Contrary to popular belief, any student can join the math team to develop and enhance their math skills. NAHS has many athletes and sport teams but our “Mathletes” deserve just as much recognition, for they are a win¬ ning organization we can be proud of!! Activities } 117 T he members of this year’s National Honor Society have successfully devoted themselves to both school and community service. Led by officers Doug Dreffer (pres.), Clem Chung (vice pres.), and Scott Enright (sec. tres.), the group earned over five thousand dollars in pledges for the American Heart Association. Another blood drive was held in November and one is being planned for the spring. Members also donate their time to tutor other students. The group’s latest endeavor is sponsoring a child in a foreign country. 118 V Activities Activities 119 1st ROW: Scott Enright, Clem Chun, Tammy Petronio, Joe Harb, Kim Yetman, Mike Sullivan, Bart Baumstark, Mehool Patel, Andy Larson, Mike Denton, Steve Silberman. 2nd ROW: Maura McClung, Marie DiBennedetto, Hannalore Schumm, Sue Greenwood, Michelle Gilbert, Joe Sibol, Sue Carlson, Mike Dimelis. 3rd ROW: Heather Wolf, Harriet Tennebaum, Stephanie McGowan, Miriam Meyer, Liz Haley, Jim Hurley, Tim Howard, Lisa Clayton, Jeff Markuns, Mark Keegan. - CHECKMATE T he Chess Club, under the direc¬ tion of Mr. Kiberd, nearly doubled its membership this year. The organization provides the students with an opportunity to meet other students in area schools and compete for trophies and plaques. The chess club belongs to the Merrimack Valley Chess League, comprised of five local schools. Stude nts challenge each other in room 236 after school in order to earn one of the top five positions, allowing them to compete in matches. Team captains Christopher Lee and Mike Schmidt assist Mr. Kiberd in coordinating the five board members. Pat Maurer, Jim Knotts, Mr. Kiberd, Jason Berube, Mike Rasnek, Mike Schmidt. 120 I Activities - CHEEEESE- T he Photography Club, under the direc¬ tion of Miss Matasso, has increased its membership tremendously since the beginning of the year. One enthusiastic member states, “Well, we started off REAL small (two or three members) but we’ve grown over the school year. It seems like at every meeting there are at least one or two new members. We have about fifteen and we’re still growing.’’ The club concentrates on the actual taking and developing of photos. “Miss Matasso teaches us to take great pictures as well as develop our own film,’’ said senior Cheryl Frazier. The group hopes to travel to several picturesque locations in the spring. Activities L ast year, Mr. Desmond, Mr. Rozzi, and Mr. Hamel decided to honor hard-working students by holding the first annual Recognition Banquet. Hard-working and dedicated students were given generous applause, a tasty dinner at the infamous DiBurros, and a plaque symbol¬ izing their dedication to promptness and excellence in aca¬ demics. The requirements? Three terms of honors or high honors and or perfect attendance in the school year 1986- 87. Among the dedicated recipients were a few students who not only had one year of perfect attendance but 2,3, or 4 years. They include: Mike Demelis, 2 years perfect attend¬ ance, Kendra Lippmann, 3 years, and Senior Jennifer Stulgis and Tom Baird, 4 years. These two students not only received a plaque for their achievements, but a $100 check {personally given by Mr. Desmond. The faces of future achiev¬ ers glowed as they anticipated receiving such an honor in upcoming years. Many enjoyed the banquet and praised the organizers for a well spent evening. Mr. Hamel stated, “The compliments from the students’ parents were great. Everyone enjoyed the event and Mr. Desmond is looking for¬ ward to one next year.” Mr. Rozzi adds, “We don’t know if last year’s criteria was the best criteria. We need to recognize more kids.” Students need appreciation and recognition for their achievements. Supporting parents, teachers, and administrators urge students to strive for high levels of achieve¬ ment and to not only attain their goals, but reach for the stars. I NEW ROADS A PS is not just a club. It’s an adven¬ ture. An adventure that takes us into a world beyond our own. This year NAHS hosted its largest number of students in the sixteen year history of the APS program. Club presi¬ de nt Kriss Neff, vice-president Cheryl Taylor and secretary treasurer Ellen Loth have helped the three exchange students to adjust to a new and different environment here in the United States. If you are lucky you have already met the three foreign students. If you haven’t, you’ve missed out on the delightful opportunity to meet someone new and interesting. T his year’s yearbook staff added new dimensions to the traditional North Andover book of yesteryear. With a new faculty section, innovative divider pages and a new underclassmen layout design, this year’s book has added flare to many a memory. Organization was the key to success. The editors started early, coming up with a viable theme and motiff almost a year in advance, and met every deadline without fail. Editor-in-Chief, Maureen Connolly, designed the smashing cover and took great pains to insure that every detail was taken care of. But it wasn’t a walk in the park. Staff members had their share of roadblocks and detours along the way, including missing photos, last-minute layouts and an inconvenient snowstorm before an important deadline. The group pulled through, however, and yearbook advisor Janet DiGianni can finally get a good night’s sleep. . . V- . 3 Mi r KPO NO T1 1 1 L E NT E F tot 1 125 Activities -JUST PASSING THROUGH- J avier Buron’s life in the U.S. is certainly taking some getting used to. He obvi¬ ously misses his younger brother and parents. But this AFS student misses his table tennis playing too. In Spain, Javier practiced 12 hours a week and played in a National League, but here at N.A.H.S., Javier has enjoyed the opportunity to play soccer and hopes to play tennis in the spring. But how does Javier like the U.S.? “I like it very much” he answers with a smile. C orrado Steri is really enjoying his stay in the United States. North Andover is not exactly the same as his home town of Genoa, Italy. As a matter of fact, Genoa is not a town but a city, with a population of one million. The wide open spaces of N.A. are an interesting change from the narrow streets of Genoa, where most people live in apartments. What does Corrado like about the U.S.? Big breakfasts, especially bacon and eggs and Cocoa Crispies. He also likes to ski and is on the varsity team at the high school. He enjoys the closeness of the ski area, three miles away, as opposed to one hundred fifty miles in Italy. When asked how he liked the people here he replied, “They are nice. They weren’t at first. But they are now.” 126 Activities A line da Silva misses her brother, two sisters and parents in Juiz de Flora, Brazil but she doesn’t miss the political corruption and the dictatorship there. She admits that she is scared to leave the U.S. because of what she may find back home. When asked how she liked the people here, she said that everybody seems too busy to pay any attention to a new student from a foreign country. She feels a little left out, but she is very happy with her host family, which she adores. “Life here is wonderful for all of you,” she told Mr. Grady’s history class, “but Brazil is my country. If I could have what 1 have here in Brazil . . .” she trailed off, shrugging her shoulders and smiling. Although he says North Andoverites are not as friendly as he would like, he understands the life of an AFS student is rough. Javier has made the most of his year abroad by taking trips to Boston and touring New En¬ gland. He has visited Washington D.C. as well. He has even taken a job at McDonalds but loves thick pan pizzas. And to sum his year up, “This year I have a wonderful op¬ portunity to do different things, learn, and mature.” W ell, the classes of 1987 and 1988 certainly proved they could at last year’s Senior Prom. It was a high-stepping and knee-slapping evening of non-stop fun and laughs. Jennifer Nassar sums up the gala event in the immortal word . . . “Good.” It all began at the NAHS fieldhouse, with underclass¬ men gossipping, Mom and Dad snapping (pictures, of course), and prom-goers arriving. Then the long awaited moment came: 7:30 chimed and the Grand March commenced. After an hour of walking around in circles. Mom and Dad sighed as John and Jamie were whisked off in their white stretch limousine, complete with a sky-blue roof. And thus, the celebration began. After a sumptuous dinner of chicken cordon whatever, Tim Howard and Jennifer Parker burned up the dance floor, jamming to Madonna’s “Holiday.” And what a holiday it was! With the festivities winding down at 1:00, the jet-setters were off again — destination unknown. Asked if they would ever do it again, the general consensus cheered a boisterous, “Absolutely.” - STAGE STARS A fter reaching a dramatic peak with the productions of “Marne”, “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Mousetrap”, Mrs. Maloney-Brown decided to direct yet another play. This time she chose to do a comedy entitled “You Can’t Take It With You” and once again she surprised us all. Not only did her rep¬ utation for producing successful shows remain untarnished, but it shone brilliantly in the midst of spot¬ lights and standing ovations. Although the finished product was an incredible success, the every day practices were not. Frequently con¬ flicts of opinion or disciplinary problems arose among members of the cast. The large size of the cast and the actors unfamiliarity with each other added to the problems. Eventu¬ ally, spontaneous arguments sprouted up until the tension exploded in an all out slander session at a meeting where all cast and crew were present. Unprofessional? Maybe, but nothing a few cups of coffee and a cigarette couldn’t cure. So, through the long month of March, the cast struggled to the point of perfection. As the days passed, people who were once strang¬ ers went from familiar to friendly and finally to family. A great sense of accomplishment and pride bonded every actor together as the last show drew a standing ovation from a fabulous crowd. The rehearsals were finally over, but the cast parties were just beginning . . . 130 V Activities - A WHALE OF A TIME T he excitement of the morning made the cold bearable as 50 students boarded the bus heading for the Salem wharf. Veteran whale-watcher Marie DiBenedetto was prepared. “I expected to be cold and wet and see little dots that could pass for whales if you didn’t look at them too closely,” she recalled. The visibility was poor since a heavy fog settled over the water. The mood grew tense as the day wore on with¬ out a sign of any whales when sud¬ denly. . . “I couldn’t believe it! There was actually a huge whale right next to the boat,” remembered senior Maureen Thomas. The conversation was muffled as the cameras snapped in rapid succession. i ADD is no longer only a post-prom club, it’s an every weekend club which every person in the school should become a member of,” said SADD advisor Mr. McVeigh. For two years, SADD had made its message known throughout the school; Don’t Drink and Drive! Over the holidays SADD leaves its mark everywhere as posters hang on walls and flyers on car windshields. Instead, a mass of sun-crazed students dash for lockers and cars, retrieving radios, frisbees, coolers and Coppertone bottles as they head for the playing fields. This is no ordinary morning. It’s Field Day! The normal ties that bind the classes at NAHS are immediately broken. Now it’s every class for itself to the bitter end. The competition begins with class calisthenics and ends with everyone’s favorite — the Tug-of- War. The Class of ’88 ran away with the win, clobbering the Class of ’87 in the Tug-of-War. The Class of ’89 came third, and the freshmen stumbled in last. But a good time was had by all, and the rivalry between classes proved to be a healthy and enjoyable experi¬ ence. Under coach Bob Dins- more, and led by Chris Rozzi, the Knights had a very successful season. In a tough Cape Ann League schedule, the only losses came to Newburyport and Ipswich. The team was paced by good defense and opportunistic offense. The defense was led by outstanding cat cher and power hitter, Derek Cote. Rick Dichara played well defensively at his second base position. Pitcher, Cory Marconi was very impressive, winning some of the biggest games of the year for the Knights. Unsung hero, Mike Demelis played with intensity and aggressive¬ ness, according to Coach Dinsmore. With a bunch of talented young players on the J.V., the varsity team should be well represented in the years to come. 1st ROW; Rick DiChara, Joe Smith, Sean Casey, Scott Lubin, Chad Downer, Mike DeMelis. 2nd ROW: Mark Hoffman. DESMOND F or the past twenty-two years, one man has seen class after class begin a road to the future and has been at their every starting line to bid them good luck. This year will be stigmatized by the breaking of this tradition; for as the class of 1988 takes leave of North Andover High School, so does our very dedicated principal, Daniel L. Desmond. When a senior finally completes the four years of a solid secondary school education, he is given a diploma. But what does this man receive for twenty-two years of service, care, and guidance to a high school of almost twelve-hundred? How can we prop¬ erly show our appreciation to this “Outstanding Administrator of the Year” and prestigious member of the Secondary School Principal’s Associ¬ ation, by a mere warm congratula¬ tions? Mr. Desmond has a positive im¬ pact on every student who has trav¬ eled the halls of North Andover. He retires now, leaving an induplicable imprint in the basic foundations of a North Andover education and an im¬ pressive list of accomplishments for the next principal to live up to. So, on behalf of the class of 1988, this year’s KNIGHT is dedicated to you, Mr. Desmond, for all you’ve done for us. We thank you, we love you and most of all, we’ll miss you.
