THE WRITING ON THE WALL Walls offer us protection from the elements. Yet, if we are sur- rounded by too many, we feel trapped. North Andover High has few walls. So, what do we have for protection1 A great King of Sparta, when asked why Sparta had no walls, pointed to his people and declared, “These are the Spartan walls. ” So it is within our school. The student body and faculty together constitute our walls. The students are the stones, somewhat unrefined at first, but ready to be cut. The faculty are the masons who shape the stones, and the adminis¬ tration is the mortar which secures the stones and keeps them in line. As to having no barriers between classrooms, our open con¬ cept prevents us from feeling trapped and forces us to confront challenges. Without walls, we have no corners. Without corners we have no crises, only open cross¬ roads that converge on promise and the possibility of every direc¬ tion. 6
