Before I built a wall Yd ask to know What I was walling in Or walling out — Robert Frost 2 Published by the senior class of North Andover High School 675 Chickering Road North Andover , MA 01845 3 ' ii THE WRITING ON THE WALL Walls offer us protection from the elements. Yet, if we are sur- rounded by too many, we feel trapped. North Andover High has few walls. So, what do we have for protection1 A great King of Sparta, when asked why Sparta had no walls, pointed to his people and declared, “These are the Spartan walls. ” So it is within our school. The student body and faculty together constitute our walls. The students are the stones, somewhat unrefined at first, but ready to be cut. The faculty are the masons who shape the stones, and the adminis¬ tration is the mortar which secures the stones and keeps them in line. As to having no barriers between classrooms, our open con¬ cept prevents us from feeling trapped and forces us to confront challenges. Without walls, we have no corners. Without corners we have no crises, only open cross¬ roads that converge on promise and the possibility of every direc¬ tion. 6 9 drummond playground 12 13 14 16 S V f 1 i 1 V Julie Christopher Wendy Foulds Elaine Fann Colleen Walsh - Chad Dalton Amy Trask Dave Kerem Kate Rinaldi Peg McNally Jen Dziadosz Eric Shannon Mark Mank Kerrie Deegan Kristin Spero Melissa Schwab Jodi Gallante and Cathy Dugan 18 Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away Erin McLaughlin Liza Palmer Christy Carson Eric Swenson Tracey Matthews Muriel Dussett Mi Christina Fev Kathy Streeter Mike Parker Marc Torrisi Linda Scarborough Maura O’Connell Lori Takesian Lisa Cimmino Annemarie Lyons Pam Picard Matt DellaCroce 19 Greg Parker Marybeth Katis Heather Sinclair Julie Cipolla Stacy Crane Alyssa Bayley Karen Raney Steve Nugent Karen Steams 20 Michelle Piotte Trevor Crum Heather Augusta Amy Parker Anna DiMarca Alicia Saracusa Betsy Flynn Julie Papalia Now I need a place to hide away 21 Jennifer Meldrum Christina Gabriel Rich Bentley Julie Fragala Wendy Foulds, Lori Takesian, Mary Murphy, Paula Frizelle Anne Healy Penelope Phan-Lung 222 Tina Kehrig Oh, I believe in yesterday Kelly Tobin Amy Gross Paula Frizelle Bill Young Jennifer Hyder Kristin Giantris Margie Luck Kelly Gurry Peggy Lynch Jim Miller John McElhenny Lisa DeMelis Lenny Anna loro After what seems like an eternity of privileges and sophistication, there four long, well, maybe not-so-long school days, the countdown, for comes a rushed realization — the years. seniors, begins to mean something, responsibility of setting standards, The climax! Remember how cool it sounded in eighth grade? So now we’re freshmen and it’s not as great as we thought it would be. Ninth grade presents new challenges like surviv¬ ing finals or completing term papers that require more than just copying a page of an encyclopedia. Just the same, facing these situations teaches us how to climb and with every small victory, we ascend with more certainty. Time passes quickly, and sooner than we realize, we are sopho¬ mores. ' With a year of experience tucked under our belts, scaling becomes much easier with the foot holds we have found in our friends and the activities we take part in. But all too quickly, our status as sopho¬ mores departs. So here we are, juniors. We have almost made it over the wall, although the greatest obstacles are found but a few inches from the top. For instance, we face taking the SATs, planning for college, or finally applying for a real job. Even so, this year we have the option of going to the prom and now we’re jingling car keys. Making it over the wall isn’t easy, but would you rather make the climb with anyone else? The lights dimmed, the audience ate, drank and made merry and the performers offered everything from classic torch songs to new wave dance sequences to funked-up calhand-response rapping, Graham, Selima and the kids had rhythm, they had music, and had Cabaret. In fact, it’s tough enough just to find a few tangible reasons that might have even persuaded them into 1 it — there was no promise of glittering glory or enormous sums of money. If someone remembered, then maybe they’d receive a little something from the Methuen Mall on Awards Day — potholders or some decent cologne. But despite the diminishing returns, they were still there for us. They were there for us through countless Friday night dances, fund¬ raisers and one particularly time-consuming senior prom. They basked in the reflected glow of our class during the good times and were there to shoulder the burden when things went wrong. They assumed the responsibility of representing a class just as well-know ' n for its friendliness as its waywardness. Invariably, they were there to fall back on. They are Mr. Gerald Sanford and Mrs. Susan McGregor. Somehow or other, they found time out from teaching Sons and Lovers and personal typing, respectively, to show us the way — in¬ dulgent and prudent at the same time. They began toting the sometimes weary load for us when we were freshmen and on June 5, 1987, they’ll share with us the honor and the sadness of setting it down. But for walking by our side these four years past — we thank them. Mr. Gerald Sandford Activities 135 There are forty teams representing sixteen different sports at NAHS. How important are they? Just looking at the trophy-crammed showcase should tell you. If that’s not enough, just step into the field house and you’ll he dwarfed by the scarlet hue of championship banners. The athletics at North Andover represent pride and dedication. Those who play fall sports end their summer vacations a week early. The winter athletics spend countless hours practicing in a steamy gym or on an icy slope, or even rising before dawn to get more ice time. By spring, those who stick it out for just one more sea¬ son throwing, hitting, running, and jumping have a lot to be proud of. What really makes the teams at NA so great? It’s not the Division II North finalist banners, or those nifty Cape Ann Championship jackets, or even the Greater Lawrence tourna¬ ment ballgame, but something less material. It is an undefinable emotion — school pride. That is the cement that holds up the wall. FAW BU5 h 1C Fan Bus LUves mt Ti ' fti U Mt. Miss Janet Bryan, as advisor, reshaped our conceptions of ideal layouts, photographs, key phrases, and more. We hope that our endeavors, last minute as they were, reflect her expertise. Elaine, what would we have done without your fancy filing technique, or likewise, without Kathryn’s last story? The final late night session enlightened select members of the staff, who have come to know the true meaning of “yearbook. ” This I dedicate to them: The cinnamon roll refused to jump with the chair that happily regurgitated the eyelash!
