Football 1973 was the year of the Big D” at North Andover as defense was the key to North Andover’s success. Led by Frank Stewart, Jim Greenwood, John Sansoucie and John Pickard, the defense held the opponents scoreless in its first four games. Altogether they gave up only 42 points in 9 games! The offense also had a good year. With Frank Cunningham calling signals and Joe McManus bulldozing his way for touchdowns. The offense scored 135 points. The North Andover High School Football team ended the season with a 5-3-1 record. The Seniors leave behind a sense of courage, strength, and leadership, which is bound to stick for years to come. But when you re a cheerleader, it s all worth it. Leading the crowd in cheers at a game—whether it’s football, basket¬ ball, or hockey—you’re letting the team know you’re with them all the way—and that’s w ' hat makes cheerleading a great experience. Captain Carolyn Levy and Co-Captain Debbie Bryant and Advisor Deborah Gesing and 11 other vivacious girls did a great job at keeping up school spirit by holding two rallies, awarding the spirit stick to the class with the most spirit at each football game and activating the Pep Club. Standouts on offense were Carlene Wilson and Lee Marchisio while both Jayne Gosselin and Karen Kelley did a good job in the goal. 61 Varsity Basketball 1973 The 1972-1973 basketball team brought with it a special gratification for Coach Licare, as he gained his 200th victory as head coach at NAHS. Team members ranged from 80 to 220 pounds and produced winners in all the weight classifications. Hockey This year was a first for a var¬ sity hockey team at North Andover. Coached by Mr. McDonald and Mr. Logue, the new Scarlet Knights team played in the Cape Ann Hockey league, and although they didn’t succeed in having a winning season they did serve notice to other league teams that they were far better than most first year clubs. With their auspicious begin¬ ning, and the fact that most of the team was made up of underclassmen, makes things look very good for the future. Outstanding players on this year’s team included Rich Pedigree, Mark Esposito and Mike and Jim Caron. 68 Tom Murgo, Mark Esposito, Jim Caron NA vs. Essex Aggie Pete Caron, Fran Murphy Coaches McDonald and Logue 69 Varsity Basketball FIRST ROW: Donna Farrow, Lisa Aziz (co-captain), Leslie Harris (co-captain), Rachael Petralito, Carol Clermont. Its forty-four members participated in the Christmas parade, sponsored several dances, and collected for a scholarship drive. They also conducted a very successful canned food drive, to aid the Salvation Army’s Christmas appeal. Throughout the years at NAHS, the main function of Student Council has been to act as a mediary between the students and the faculty. It has tried to take the problems of the student body and solve them in such a way as to be approved by both the administration and students. 87 Knight One of the most active organizations in NAHS is the yearbook. Staff members began working during mini courses and continued until March, spending long afternoons and vacations producing a yearbook that they hope will record var¬ ious aspects of the year’s activities. Natu¬ rally, intelligence and good scholarship are important factors. However, character, service, and leadership are also prerequi¬ sites for membership, and all members are expected to live up to these considerations. The 1972-1973 members conducted a bakery sale during parent conference night, assisted in scholarship and other worthwhile drives and served as tutors to various underclass¬ men. Its members held a dance in October, sold football programs and conducted a fund drive. The money collected went towards sponsoring a foreign exchange student for a year and towards sending a North Andover student abroad sometime in the near future. This year’s foreign exchange student was Bruce Klein from New Zealand. He served as drum major for the band, and played electric bass in the stage band. He also took up skiing, which he greatly enjoyed. Swimming The 1972 mini-courses were a tremendous success as students par¬ ticipated in courses and sports that they previously had never come in contact with. Everything from yoga to lifesaving, cake decorating to ham-radio operating, was offered and while having a great time, stu¬ dents benefited from the brief instruction. Never to be forgotten was the mad dash from the bleachers toward the sign up desks to get the courses of your choice. 94 State Government Canoeing Jewelry Work i ' Weaving 95 The second annual Field Day was held under the di¬ rection of the physical edu¬ cation department in May of 1972. The participants spent many afternoons and evenings practicing for cal¬ isthenics, pyramids, and other events. The class of 73 made a surprising come- back when Billy Canty won the Field Hockey drive, Debbie Lynch came in sec¬ ond in the half mile run and Frank Stewart won the shot-put. The trophy was presented to class president, Susan Zagorski by Mr. Garofoli. 1972 97 Oomp-papa!! Well, it’s not the Rolling Stones but it will do Mamie!!
