ALVAH G. HAYES Headmaster Message to the Seniors Any message worthy of the name should provide some impetus for quiet reflection. During your years of schooling, you have been asked to remember many things. Many of them are probably now forgotten, but I am going to take the liberty of passing on to you some advice coming from the pen of the great Marshall Field, a genius in the field of retailing, who has long since passed to his reward, but whose memory is perpetuated through the world-famous department store which bears his name. This bit of advice is entitled “Twelve Things to Remember,” and includes: 1. The value of time 2. The success of perseverance 3. The pleasure of working 4. The dignity of simplicity 5. The worth of character 6. The power of kindness 7. The influence of example 8. The obligation of duty 9. The wisdom of economy 10. The virtue of patience 11. The improvement of talent 12. The joy of originating. A storehouse of joyful living lies within those twelve simple thoughts. A sermon could be developed around each one. I would suggest to each of you, that some¬ time during a period of reflection, you analyze yourself with respect to each of these “Twelve Things to Remember.” They represent the characteristics of many great men of the past.
