As tee-time rolled around late in February, Coach Carl Youngstrom called for golf candidates and started off on another successful season. With out- standing player Harlan Krantz back from last year, Norte did very nicely in representing our school. Coach Youngstrom, as well as the boys, are to be commended for their untiring work as instructor and competitors. James Mack, a junior, showed real skill as the season progressed. These men have put more than a little time and effort into building this team of championship caliber. However, desire has to be matched with ability and this year's team was not lacking here. It is hard to single out individual stars on this team. True, there were those who made all-city teams, but there were many others, some equally deserving of mention, who contributed greatly to such a successful season. Bob Lazark, all-city and Northern California, is probably most remembered for his fine running, passing, and also his fine defensive end play, but what of the running of Pete Haro, John Garcia, Alex Viramontes and Al Biancani, the spectacular breakaway threat until injured midway through the season, or the blocking and defensive play of Buzz Lewis and Dennis Marzigliano, blocking backs in the single wing formation used by the Dons, or of such fine linemen as Doug York, Jerry Neil, John Farrell, Rich Vercruyssen, Ken Devarney, Dale Hoppe, Bill Hewitt, Gene Natali, and Dave Altobell. These are not all, many others will return for what we hope will be another champion- ship team. But championships are not easily come by as the members of this year's team know, they will not for- get the many long hours on the practice field, or the heartbreak after the loss to Sacramento, when it appeared the championship had slipped through our fingers. Many things will not be forgotten by the members of this team, and they will not be forgotten by Norte. ln basketball, Coach Youngstrom's five ended the season with a creditable tie for third place after being in contention for second until the final game of the season which we lost to our archrival, Grant. Seniors dominated the basketball scene this year as John Feusi, Dick Moore, Phil Veare, Bob Albers, Pete Haro, and Howard Rankin were the men to see the most action throughout the year. The Dons never quite reached the heights hoped for, at times playing brilliant ball, at times very mediocre. The Dons were hurt by transfers and suspensions, so all in all, it was a very satisfactory season. Returning letterman Bob Lazark, Dick Moore, Alex Viramontes, T. W. Jones, Doug York, John Garcia, and Lee Stewart greeted new coach Angelo Costello as the Don baseball team, bolstered by the addition of Bob Copren, Spencer Peterson, Pete Pinto, Tom Greenwood, and Jack Boden, began the season with a number of fine show- ings pointing to a very successful season. As this was written, Dicky Moore, John Garcia and Alex Viramontes were wielding potent bats, with Pete Pinto and Bob Lazark showing signs of coming around. Bob Copren, Lee Stewart and Spencer Peterson, except for a little wildness, were handcuffing opposing batters. T. W. Jones and Doug York completed the starting lineup as the Dons defensive play settled down after some rocky first games. Two wins over San Juan, one over James Marshall and a close loss to Bishop Armstrong in which we outhit the Falcons summarized the early season play. McClatchy appeared to be the team to beat in Metro League play, but if the Don potential iells, watch out Lions! ln track Coach Brown greeted a larger number of tryouts than in recent years. Al Biancani, senior returning letterman and one of the best 100 and 440 men in the area, brighten the Dons outlook as a fine crop of under- classmen made surprising early season showings. John Mullen in the sprints, Jim Houser, Howard Nanninga, Dave Gordon, Art Jaime, Eddie Gibson and John Feusi all showed good early form and prospects were for one of the most successful track seasons in Norte's history. Being undefeated in pre-season play with five returning letterman, the tennis team had an excellent oppor- tunity of making this the team's most successful season. Coach Bud McCoy welcomed returning letterman Bob Albers, Jim Duerner, John Kromer, Larry Lauszus and Bob Rickman. All are seniors, excepting.Kromer, so this appeared to be the year, and pre-season play brought a smile to Coach McCoy's face as his men were undefeated at the time of this writing. K Having a successful season, this year's golf team, under the direction of coach Carl Youngstrom, did a fine job representing themselves as a part of Norte. With returning letterman Harlan Krantz, who is one of the areas top contender, Norte held her ground very nicely. Norte's swimming team did not win very many meets this season but they still made a good showing against the rough competition. Next years team will be without the outstanding services of Lee DeMoss, who swam the 100 yd. butterfly and Captain Bob Carpenter, 200 yd. free style and 120 yd. Ind. Medley. But there will be some good returning letterman in Co-captain Holly Hollingsworth, 50 yd. and 700 yd. free style, Frank Hickox, 100 yd. backstroke, and Steve Lagergren, 100 yd. breast stroke. -75- .we- wp Bob Rickman awaits return on 'L the tennis court with his doubles partner, Bob Albers. lt's the prettiest pose we've ever seen Alex . . . Basketball Here you see nine outstanding students . . . students which the yearbook staff, with the faculty's aid, have chosen outstanding. Outstanding because they have worked hard on many school activities, shown their ability to get along with others, and demonstrated fine scholastic ability. These students, now seniors, have led and represented the class of '59 and Norte since they were sophomores. They were not only leaders, but friends to all with whom they came in contact. lt is with great pleasure that we present the OUTSTANDING SENlORS of 1959. Rallies, dances such as the Senior Ball, assemblies, athletic contests, and numerous other school activities-this petite lass, BARBARA ABILA, could be seen actively working for Norte at any of the above activities. Barbara was never one to turn down a request by school groups or faculty members to work on one of Norte's activities during her three years here, and in her quiet way has contributed greatly to the spirit of Norte. As head yell leader for A and B teams, assistant varsity yell leader, rally member and senior yell leader, her smiling face was a familiar sight at Norte activities. Her efforts, as well as the others on these pages, are much appreciated. aw, Being friendly comes natural to NANCY BOYD. This trait has helped Nancy to be chosen as Football Princess and for such offices as Commissioner of Entertainment, Pres. of class as a Soph., and Rally. With imagination and creativeness about her Nancy developed new routines as Head Songleader, which helped to win the Sportsmanship Trophy. As Society Editor of the Jester, Nancy has been one of the most dependable and hard working Norte students. We hope you are as successful in the years to come as you have been here at Norte. CAROL COZlNE'S willingness to work and friendliness have made a great impression upon Norte's students and faculty. Carol demonstrated her fine ability to lead and get along with others while she served on Council, Rally, and as Head Songleader. She has given freely of her time and efforts to Norte's benefit. The people who have been associated with her greatly appreciate the many little things which Carol has done that are not often seen, such as working on dance decorations and clean-up committees. Norteans love to brag about their school and their wonderful student body and one name that should be included in every praise is T. W. JONES. From the name one may not realize the spirit and versatility of our boy Jones. But listening to him and watching his seemingly endless expressions reveals everything any statistic could relate. From Council Rep. at Large to Varsity baseball to Student Body Pres. in his final semester at Norte is a fine record that we all cheer and proudly add to Norte's list of outstanding accomplishments. May all the good things in the world fall at the feet of a most deserving senior, T. W. Jones. v .'lf1A, Yvnen We THINK OT Un UUTSTUHUIHQ sfuaenf UU We evel' STOP To THINK WUUT makes him outstanding? An outstanding student does not emerge overnight. The things that make him popular with us are his many outstanding qualities that are perennial. These statements are true of LARRY LAUSZUS! He is popular with Norteans because his varied accomplishments at Norte and for Norte, have won our respect for him. From his sophomore year through his senior year, he has held such offices as Council Rep. at Large, Class Council Rep., Sr. Class Pres., and many other offices. Larry, you are our idea of an outstanding student, and we appreciate your services which have helped raise our standards. which he was chosen Vice Pres. friends, on and off the Norte campus. JANET MAAKESTAD, having high scholastic ability and a refreshing per- sonality, has always been a leader of the class. She has been ready to help when any job was to be done. She helped make our Junior Prom the wonderful success it was and just a few of the many activities she has participated in are: Council Rep., Girls Vice President, Pres. of C.S.F., Dance Band and she also represented Norte at Girls State. We are proud to present you as an outstanding Senior of 1959, Jan. California Scholarship Federation. Full of school spirit, respect and loyalty SONDRA WILLIAMSON is noted as one of Norte's most active girls. A few of her outstanding accomplishments are Rally chairman, Girls Vice President, Council Rep., and general chairman of Football Fiesta. Friendliness, cheerfulness and dependability have helped Sondra win the respect and admiration of the student body as well as the faculty. Sondra you have been an asset to Norte and we appreciate you and your accomplishments. Good luck to a- deserving girl. - 105 - BOB LAZARK, who has helped to put Norte Del Rio on the map has helped to win the respect of the other teams and schools Sports being his main interest, Bob has participated in B and Vr Basketball Vr. Baseball and Vr. Football since he was a sophomore and became captain of the Dons winning team as a senior This was not his only interest as Bob led his class through many activities during his Junior year as class pres.
