ao i 0l'ebU0l' IN this, the fiftieth year ot the publication of Spice, we pause for a brief recital of history concerning the boolc. The initial issue, edited by J. Clarence Emery. was published in June 1896. The first cover, which we have reproduced in slightly reduced size on our title and division pages, set a style which was retained practic- ally unchanged for all issues until 1903. Then the desires of individual staffs began to express themselves in varying cover designs. In its early period Spice was purely a monthly, literary magazine. It was the literary outlet of the school and paid relatively little attention to athletic activities. Beginning in 1925 the idea of the publication began to change, and the resulting boolc became larger, more of a record boolc, and published less often. By 1951 it was admittedly a year boolc. or rather. uclass book, since it appeared twice a year. as did commencement. Since then it has appeared in its present annual form as a record of the persons and the activities ol the senior class. The retrospect is pleasant. It shows adaptibility and achievement. Our hope is that the coming halt century will be equally pleasant to those who create and then Ioolc back upon the future editions of Spice.
