The initial issue, edited by J. Clarence Emery. was published in June 1896. The first cover, which we have reproduced in slightly reduced size on our title and division pages, set a style which was retained practic- ally unchanged for all issues until 1903. Then the desires of individual staffs began to express themselves in varying cover designs. In its early period Spice was purely a monthly, literary magazine. It was the literary outlet of the school and paid relatively little attention to athletic activities. Beginning in 1925 the idea of the publication began to change, and the resulting boolc became larger, more of a record boolc, and published less often. By 1951 it was admittedly a year boolc. or rather. uclass book, since it appeared twice a year. as did commencement. Since then it has appeared in its present annual form as a record of the persons and the activities ol the senior class. The retrospect is pleasant. It shows adaptibility and achievement. Our hope is that the coming halt century will be equally pleasant to those who create and then Ioolc back upon the future editions of Spice. When the sounds of war have passed away, America must help to create a world in which there shall he equality of opportunity and liherty lor every race and lor every people. ln that tremendously important worlc the voice of youth will he heard, whether they spealc or are silent. Never helore have there been young men and women who are so well Fitted by nature and trained by design to meet this great challenge. You go out to become a part of that body of youth of our land. Have you the self-reliance, the courage. the qualities of leadership and the vision to sup- port the movement that will bring a new era of peace and dignity to all manlcind? Sincerely, .fw Q u Students. Present and personal histories are recorded for you in this your hoolc. They have been so recorded in one form or another for the past hall century. Anniversaries are interesting provided one loolcs upon them only as a boundary ol' the past. If achievement in any field is to continue, time needs to lay down other mileposts ol the same lcind in the future. One thinlcer once defined space this way-Go, said he, to the end of space and there put a boundary. What have you on the other side of the fence?--Achievement needs to he like that. The past is something which we lcnow, and from which we can profit if we are wise enough. In the present we mark our boundary of the past. But on the other side of the fence lies the future'-fill it with achievements, so that the hlundering, bloody present will he only an ugly misshapen milepost. lvlan can live in peace, with cooperation and harmony. Help to create that world. 'x g6lCll,Ag EVER since Spice was lirst pulalishecl llilty years ago, we owe its success through no small part to the faculty, with their ever reacly assistance ancl encouragement. ADDISON J. With representatives from each home room, headed by Qliver Smith, president. and lxflr. William Spangler, faculty advisor, the Council succeeded in its numerous projects. The ability of the students to govern them- selves has been proven by the Council's success. One such project is the purchase of a boolc, which is kept on a stand built by the Vocational department, in which servicemen are aslced to sign their names, branch, and write any message they chose. For the second time an industrious, worth while committee was formed by representatives oi Student Council, the Senior Class. the Vocational Society. Spice, Hi-Eye. and the Traffic Squad to discuss and solve problems that came up concerning the school spirit and activities. This committee, with a different organization as chairman each time, was especially successful in arranging and holding dances every month for the enjoyment oi the entire student body. Another addition to the enjoyment of lile sponsored by the Council is the acquisition of a library of popular records to be used alter basketball games and at dances. The Student-Faculty Committee, which consists of an equal number of teachers and Council representatives, tool: charge of the problems affecting both students and faculty. The Publicity, Social. Welfare, Building and Grounds Committees of the Council all carried out their duties under the direction of their chairmen. The Building Committee organized a group to help relieve the shortage of janitors by helping to clean up the halls during free periods. The able officers of Student Council during the first semester were: Oliver Smith, president: Donald Fargo. Vice president: Marie Martino, secretary: Pierce Davis, treasurer: and Robert White, sergeant-at-arms. The president, secretary and sergeant-at-arms succeeded themselves in the second semester. TG get the most students to the right place, at the right time, with the least amount of effort and confusion is the purpose of the traffic club. To solve this problem a staff of vigilant young officers were faithfully on duty in the halls of Norristown High School between classes, in the auditorium during assemblies and in the cafeteria during the busy lunch hours. The traffic squad previously sponsored by Mr. Elmer C. Hoffman is now supervised by Mr. John L. Schuler. Burton Saclcs was Chief during the first semester: Albert Tyler succeeded him as Chief for the second semester. Aiding fthese leaders to carry on their momentous taslcs were Assistant-Chiefs Joseph Epifano and Captains Robert Barry, Robert Campitell, Walter Czarneclci, Ronald lKeith, Leonard Jeffers and Albert Tyler. Added attractions this year were Edward Kromer. the tail, talented Drum- lViajor, and the four Drum-Majorettes, who fascinated the spectators with their synchronized baton-twirling. For the first time this year memhers of the hand appeared as a unit at haslcethall games. Although small in number, the groups played with an enthusiasm which was contagious. Under the direction of Mr. Damon Holton the hand gave an assembly pro- gram for the school. ln the spring the hand, comioined with the orchestra presented to the puhlic the annual Spring Festival. The hand did not participate in public parades this year, their only outside activity heing a concert presented to 1000 patients at the State Hospital on January 22. Although the N. H. S. hand won the title of State Champions in 1942, they were unahle to compete for this title this year because of war conditions. Of the seventy-tour memhers of the present hand, at least ten were freshmen memhers of the hand when it won the Championship. However, the taianted groups which composed the hand this year receives Championship rating from all who have been fortunate to hear it play. UPCA eff ffa THE thirty-eight students who composed the orchestra this year combined their talents to achieve a very successful season. From their first appearance in the school assemhiy programs until they closed their instrument cases in the spring, the orchestra has presented a pleasing repertory of musical numhers. Mr. Damon Holton developed the abilities of each member of the orchestra hy practices held individually, in instrumental groups, and in combined orchestral rehearsals. The Spring Festival was the only puhlic appearance of the orchestra, although many people would have enjoyed hearing this entertaining musical group more often. Under the supervision of Miss Clemmer, the four Red Cross clubs led by Miss Duclcers and Miss Leister, Mrs. Graham's Patriotic Service Club, and Mrs. Barlcer's art classes contributed to this worthy cause. These clubs worlced on alghans, made tray covers, and collected magazines. Some homerooms bought magazines to aid in this cause. Twenty-lour one year magazine subscriptions were sent to the boys in the Philadelphia area who couldn't get home lor Christmas. One homeroom collected articles and made up fifty gift boxes. The Patriotic Service Club also collected playing cards and games lor the different service clubs and hospitals. lt furnished friendship boxes for the children in foreign lands, made cartoon books, scrap books, and puzzle books for various hospitals. Nine hundred Christmas cards were collected for the boys at Valley Forge General Hospital to send to their friends. Last year rifle classes were organized under the auspices of the Montgomery County Fish and Game Association. Under the direction of Mr. John Sutch and the classroom leadership of Mr. Leonard Rothermel the classes learned how to handle rilies for war and sport. The team has competed in the National Nlatcli for the first time this year. During the sixth war loan we sold bonds amounting to Sl46,857.75. Lacicing the much needed experience, the giris, coached hy Miss Dorothy Yanisch, after a few weeks of practice proved that enough enthusiasm for a sport can overcome any ohstacie. Although the opening game of the season was Iost to Lansdaie with a score of 5 to 5, the giris returned to the courts with more contidence and tied their next opponent Ahington 5 to5. After winning over Radnor, the giris Iiurought their I91-4 season to a cIose with two more defeats. Outstanding sIciII and atmiiity were continuaiiy dispiayed hy Lois Kiipatricic and Doris Hagner. The douhies team of Peggy Logan and Kitty June Stoops was equaIIy outstanding. With many experienced piayers returning from the 1944 team, an interesting I945 seasorm can he expected. 1944 RESULTS Norristoxvn . . .5 I-ansdaIe ..... .... 5 Norristown . . .4 Radnor ..... .. . . .5 Norristoxx'n . . .5 Ahington .... .... 5 Norristown . . .2 Lower Merion . . . .5 Norristown . . .2 Lansdaie .... . . .5 1 H154 I ennid AFTER a year's rest, tennis was again ushered into the I'IaII of Sports in N. We have ideals-we believe in them--our men even die for them. But we are not foolish enough to think that victory on the battlefield in the name of these ideals solves everything. Victory and peace will be hollow rewards for those who suffered and fought for them . . . who prayed for them, if courage and character fails at home. America looks to its youth-to you young people who, next year or a few years hence, will be respon- sible for all the leadership, vision and spirit of en- terprise that a post-war world will demand. These are important days-days that are calling for all who are not in uniform, especially American youth, to give of their fullest in faith, courage and character. America has good cause to look hopefully ahead -conhdent that those who must assume this trust will not fail.
