BEFORE WE BEGIN EMOCRACY in this era has acquired a meaning of singular impor- tance. lt is a living thing, the proud heritage of generations of Americans who are training their successors to continue the tradition of representation. The school is the first institution which educates its students for the democratic way of life. Through student government we learn obedience to law and the responsibility of self-government. Profitable use of leisure time is achieved through club work and extra- curricular activities. Clean competitive sportsmanship has been the aim and accomplishment of athletics. But all of these qualities are repeated in the classes and course of studies offered for the student's selections. ln our schools we are allowed and urged to choose our subjects, we are not restricted or compelled to take a certain government-directed cur- riculum. We are educated to find and take up our station in life. We, the people, are the components of this nation, founded and built on a common right to equality. lt is this actual equality that has influenced us to produce a book which uses as its theme education for democracy, with the hope that it will serve as a constant reminder of the opportuni- ties that are ours. A: SCI-ICCL Preparedness and defense are keywords today. In school preparedness of students for the democratic way of life is the aim and purpose of the administration and faculty. Education is the defense of democracy.
