HISTORY OF USS NORRIS USS NQRRIS CDD-8593 is named in honor of Major Benjamin White Norris, a U.S. Marine Corps pilot who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism at the Battle of Midway. Launched on 25 February, 1945, USS NORRIS was com- missioned on 9 June of the same year. , Her primary mission is anti-submarine warfare, for which she is equipped with six Mark 32 torpedo tubes, two drone helicopters fDASHJ, a trainable hedgehog battery, and underwater detection devices. She also carries four 5 f38 guns in two twin mounts. NORRIS is propelled by steam generated by four boilers, and her 60,000 horsepower give her a maximum speed of more than thirty knots. Since 1950, NORRIS has participated in twelve Mediterranean cruises, six major shipyard overhauls, five Caribbean cruises, and many short cruises and anti-submarine exercises. She served as a tracking ship for an early test firing of the Polaris missile, and as secondary recov- ery unit for the manned Gemini 10 space flight. From October, 1966, until April, 1967, she deployed to the western Pacific, and cruised the waters off the Mekong Delta in support of our troops. During this period she fired more than 8,600 rounds against enemy positions ashore. She completed her Viet Nam cruise by makingacircumnavigation of the world. NORRIS's most recent deployment began on 9 May, 1969, and ended seven months later on 4 December. She cruised the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and visited many ports in Europe, including Palma, the Riviera, Athens, Salerno, Naples, and Valletta, Malta. She sailed into the Black Sea twice, in company with USS NEWMAN K. PERRY fDD-883J,being shadowed by several Soviet warships. Other highlights of this cruise were participation in Sixth Fleet exercises, the achievement of a near record number of flight hours logged on her DASH drones, and several days of continuous exer- cises with U,S. Submarines. She also ably fulfilled her more routine duties as life- guard for carrier operations, evolutions at sea, and serving as a school afloat for Naval Academy midshipmen. I i
