This full program of sports gives more boys a chance to participate in athletics. Football and Track were introduced in school this year along with our other two regular sports, Baseball aml Basketball. The basketball team was the best the school has seen in years, ending with a 21-6 record. Football in its first year passed all expectation and ended with a 2-2-1 record. The baseball team has all of the last yearss starting line-up back except one - ami no less than four boys are after that position. So, there seems to be a good future in store for Norris City baseball fans. The track team, in its first year since 1947, has great possibilities and should do well this year. Coaches: Westphal, jones. Football Team Head football coach Westphal and assistant coach Iones did a tremendous job with the football team. Football is a rough sport, and the boys had to be in good condition for it. Every- body being in condition was a major factor in the games. The boys were nobody's push-over. Football is a team sport and without the cooperation of each player nothing could be accomplished successfully. Although the backs did most of the scoring, none of this could have been possible without our tough, hard-hitting line, the unknown heroes of the gridiron. Head football coach Wcstphal and assistant coach jones Managers RoNAx.n llrumoc it lJlCKll:I CAll'l'l:IR, RICHARD EoMoNns AND RoNA1.n IJUVVNEN Quartcrlzarlt NORRIS CITY got off to a good start in football when they traveled to McLean- sboro cmd played the more experienced Foxes to a 19-19 tie. The next week the Cardinals took to the road again as they traveled to Metropolis. The resul- tant was the first football victory in the history of Norris City-Omaha High. A sixty yard punt return was good for the only score of the game and Norris City ame home with a 6 O victory The first home game was one that many fans will never forget A float parade through town brought the excitement to a climax but the Cardinals couldnt quite come through as McLeansboro won 1312 The next game was with Valier and was the season s only var sity game But Norris Citys pass de fense was not up to par and Val1er won 128 The final game with Met ropolis was a thriller and ended with Norris C1ty scoring the only touchdown late in the fourth guarter thus winning 6 0 Thus ended the first football sea son at Norris City Omaha High School The final record stood at two won two lost and one tie-a very commendable record for a first year team linux lmnxuw Llox -tmxrs XIALRICE Cmhixilxh JOHN LACNILLD lat Ht Back Tue HL Quurlcrbudt liiglzl limi, Hrucv li. The Cardinals finished the season with a 21-6 record. This record is something for every- one to be proud of. Many of Norris City's victories were one's that will never be forgotten. One of these was the sweet 71-66 victory over our arch rival, Carmi. Another was the twenty point 67-47 vic- tory over another fierce rival, McLeans- boro. Although the starting five averaged under six feet, and only one man on the starting five was over six feet, Norris City constantly out-rebounded much taller op- ponents. Such was the case when We played Ridgway, who has a 6'9Vz cen- ter. But that didn't stop the Cardinals, they out-rebounded him too, and won the game, 83-73. Norris City's victories in- cluded winning the Bridgeport Tourney, placing second in the Norris City Invita- tional, and reaching the semi-finals in the Regional Tournament. rmr: limmlrl llzulclorls, Alurlx -Iulmsrm, ldllis Alt'clt7l'Illlt'lQ, l.1'm1au'cl ll1'l1vn',Alil11 tll'l'1lillUllSl'. Norris City Cheerleaders RESHMAN CHEERLEADERS F Left to right: Sue Bryant, Kay Moye and Connie Martin THE NORRIS CITY CHEERLEADERS, as al- ways, did an excellent job in cheering the team on to victory. Without these girls, who led the yells and who fought almost as hard as did the players, the team would not have been the same. The fighting spirit of the cheer- leaders kept the crowd's excitement and spirit at its peak. With this kind of backing the team could not help but have the same kind of spirit. Surely, nowhere in the state of Illi- nois could a prettier group of cheerleaders be found. Under their guidance the Norris City fans were a well-behaved but hard yelling group of enthusiatic fans. The cheerleaders are to be commended on their excellent work for this year. FOR THE FIRST TIME in ten years,Norris City High School will field a track team. There are six scheduled meets. Three varsity and three Freshman-Sophomore meets. The track team has been hampered by rain and has been doing most of its working-out in P. E. classes. This does not necessarily mean that any of the positions are nailed down. Sixteen boys are battling for those nine positions and there will be keen competition for these positions at all times. The team has nine games on its schedule and then the state elimination tournaments. The team has high hopes of going a long way in this tournament and the whole school is be- hind them. gh SCl'lO0l BBSCBBII TZBITI any ,f xr X xi 1 ,lf l , 5 1 jack jolnnson at 12111. Ri. Student Council THE STUDENT COUNCIL is a very important part of the administration. It is the link between the student body and the faculty. The main activity this year was the publication of information book- lets for the three tournaments held here. The money from this project was used to send three delegates to the I. A. S. C. Convention in Chicago. This year the Student Council had two members who were officers in the larger divisions of the Student Council. Distributive Education and Diversified Occupation Program NORRIS CITY STUDENTS were given an opportunity to participate in an entirely new program this year. D. E. and D. O. programs are relatively new, especially in White County, this being one of the two, county-wide pro- grams in the United States. The objectives of this type of training are primarily the same as any vocational program, namely: prepara- tion for a job and improvement is occupations already being practiced. Norris City High School has three students in D. O. and three in D. E. Students partici- pating in this program complete their regular academic high school requirements by attend- ing school half of the day and training on the job sixteen hours per week. Four hours are spent each week in related study classes under the supervision of co-ordinators in which technical knowledge related to each particular trade or occupation is acquired. Mr. Iames E.
