V irginia Frederick Secretary-Treasurer ...................................... Gene Gregg We Sophomores entered high school in August, 1947 with an enrollment of thirty-eight. There have been larger classes enter- ing, but none has progressed more rapidly. This year we have gained some members, which increases our enrollment to forty-three. Competent and energetic class officers were elected and we are ably represented on the Student Council by Joan Crouch, Wilma Bayley and Charles Gossett. , We are very proud of the members of the Sophomore Class who are playing with the Varsity Basketball team. These boys are James Coffman and Charles Gossett. Class members on the Junior Varsity team are Wilbur Lack, Kern Doerner, Jimmy Davis and Joe Piland. The team manager, Cyril Doerner, was also appointed from our class, We have as sponsors two very dependable persons, Mr. DeJarnett and Mr. Rehberg. CII-IE GARDINAL - ALL SCHOOL PARTIES 10 An All-School Party was held each semester one on November 1 and another March 11. The first was a Hallowe'en Party spon- sored by the G. A. A. The gymnasium was decorated with corn- stalks and pumpkins in the appropriate manner. Prizes were awarded to the best-dressed couple, Donna Brown and Dorothy Mooreg the hardest-to-guess, Alan Mears and Marilyn Hardesty. Mrs. Fairburn supervised games and folk-dancing in the gymnasium. Later, there was dancing to records upstairs. Refreshments consisted of ham- burgers, cider and pop corn. The second party was held on March 11 in the gymnasium. The G. A. A. was in charge of dancing and records. The Hi-Y Club took care of the games, while the N. C. Club was supervising the active games. Refreshments served by the F. H. A. consisted of sandwiches, cold drinks and potato chips, HONORS TO THE SCHOOL 101 Betty Lou Bishop, Senior, was awarded the Good Citizen prize at the annual State convention of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She received a 3100.00 government bond and a trip to Chicago. The selection was made on the basis of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Minnie Veatch, Sophomore, was awarded first prize in the Carmi Elks' Club Essay Contest. She received 550.00 and her essay on Why Democracy Works will compete in the District Contest.
