Mr. Barnes Mr. Bieckschmidt As superintendent of the Normandy public schools, Mr. Ward E. Barnes administered the policies of the Board of Education. lle tried to provide the best possible instruction and facilities for all the students of the district. Believing that an adequate education was 11ot enough, he made the recognition and adjustment of individual differ- ences, the satisfaction of social needs and the development of recreational activities integral parts of the program. Mr. Barnes also planned that senior high school students should build a purposeful life philosophy to include a I standing of our government and its econo 1 under- mic sys- tem, a code of high ethical and moral standards and a desire to reach positions of leadership in our nation. As each student recognized the value of these policies, he Was encouraged to develop constructive attitudes, ideals and behavior built on critical insight into individual and group ethics and to develop a logical, scientific approach to the solution of problems. Through these policies oQCl6!8P6A,il9 .fdrwl Mr. Barnes endeavored to maintain the high rating held by the Normandy schools. to inform and build the interest of the public about school poli- cies, and to help the students become contributing members of society. Aiding lVlr. Barnes in his responsibilities and duties was Mr. H. C. Bleckschmidt, Assistant Super- intendent. His work was concentrated on providing each student with maximum opportunities to live a full, happy and successful life. He secured all the materials and equipment tor the entire Nor- mandy district and was also in charge of the Maintenance and Transportation Departments. Mr. Bleckschmidt resolved to proxide clean, well- lighted classrooms, safe comfortable busses and the best facilities and equipment for all the students. By striving for advancement and better methods and facilities through these high standards, lVlr. Barnes and Mr. Bleckschinidt proved that the past year was one of progress, careful study, expert planning and conscientious execution of all poli- cies. They also helped to maintain a balance of co-operation between the community and the school staff through their unity of purpose and a willing- ness to see it through. The 1959-60 school year brought many different changes and problems for the Normandy School Board. Due to the increased student body and the campus, the board had to work very closely with the heads of all the different, departments. Together, the Board of Education and the depart- mental heads selected the policies that sustained us through the whole school year. They maintained the whole school on a steady even keel. -10-
