One studies the works of literary masters as a part of his English course in order to learn to appreciate the beauty of the world around him, create a sympathetic understand- of people of all parts of the world, and bet- ter understand himself. American literature is studied in the eleventh grade, and English literature in the twelfth grade. Composition and grammar arc taught at all grade levels in order that students may use correct English, learn to develop ideas and draw conclusions, acquire a more extensive vocabulary, and im- prove listening and conversational habits. Past Meets Present in Social Studies The main purpose of a history class is to help students of NHS gain a deeper knowledge of the social, political, cultural, and economic institutions of mankind, so that they will develop into dependable citizens and be of greater serv- ice to the community. No longer is a history class composed of boring facts about half-forgotten dates and battles. Today, this class teaches the students how to deal with future problems by studying the results of decisions made about problems similar to those with which we will be faced. We also study the way the United States government is handled, and receive a greater understanding of our federal, state, and local governments.
