You go to class six horn’s a day, five days a week; you bring the textbook to life; you bring the past into the pres- ent; you anticipate the future. You grow through the acquiring of knowledge. Yon, coming, going, walking, running, singing, dancing, speaking, and shouting, make Norman High School buzz with excitement. You recognize your friends in the halls; you support and participate in athletic endeavors; you create a social atmosphere. You develop your person- ality through various activities. You, joining, belonging, sharing, di- viding, practicing, performing, presid- ing, discussing, and debating, turn goals into realities in Norman High School. You attend meetings; you strive to ac- complish something; you bring pride in- to your school. You become mature through a sense of responsibility. You, earning, winning, electing, hon- oring, awarding, and graduating, pro- mote leadership in Norman High School. You maintain a high grade average; you take part in many functions; you back your school in every way you know how; you work harmoniously with your fellow students and administrators. What is Norman High School? It is only a building. But you, you who do all of these things, make and keep this building alive. 'i1!'!! hum v Pi The Norman High School building stands out distinctly atop the rolling lawns facing Main Street. 6 Garrison Hall, the new science building named for Mr. J. Don Garrison, is equipped with the finest laboratories to be had for high school programs. Mr. J. Don Garrison, Superintendent of Schools. In Dedication Deciding a dedicatee for the 1964 Trail was relatively easy this year, as there was one man who stood out from all the rest in years of devoted service to Norman and its public school system. He became principal of Norman Junior High in 1933 and principal of Norman High School in 1935. The following year, 1936, he moved up to superintendent of schools where he has worked until this year, excepting his years of military service. He is the reason we have many new school buildings in Norman, only one of which is our science building. In 1947 he presented Norman High football players and enthusiastic crowds of spectators with the floodlights in Owen Sta- dium for our purposes. Each vear the bovs par- ticipating in football who receive the best grades have their names engraved on a trophy estab- lished bv him to encourage high academic stand- ing along side with physical fitness. We want to express our most sincere grati- tude to him for his outstanding dedication to Norman and its citizens by dedicating this Trail to him, although this is the third time he has received this honor. In this his vear of retire- ment, we want to say good-by, but thanks, to our friend and builder of both structure and character, Mr. J. Don Garrison. 7 pvnrmtfimtf T KA Physics seems to be fun to John Ash- more, Jacky Medcalf, Mr. Hershel Mor- ris, Jim Rummage, and Paul Kelly. Attending a recent meeting of the Board of Education were S. B. Spradlin, Clerk; Dr. John N. Miles, President; and Mr. Mr. Jack Luttrcll, Attorney; Mr. Lester M. Reed, Assistant Herbert Kuhlman, Mr. O. T. McCall, Mr. Guy Brown and Superintendent; Mr. J. Don Garrison, Superintendent; Mrs. Mr. A. L. Mason, members. Dynamic Leader The students and residents of Norman are thankful for the Board of Education that rep- resents the Norman school system. The Board meets the first Monday of each month with the Superintendent of schools, Mr. J. Don Garrison. The Board is composed of business and professional men who give their time to sec that Norman has the finest facilities for all schools. Mr. Lester M. Reed will assume responsi- bilities of Superintendent upon the retirement of Mr. Garrison next year. Besides teachers, the administration of NHS includes our principal, vice-principal, counselors, office staff, and custodians. The counselors help students plan a study program which is beneficial to them and also furnish information about college scholarships available to NHS students. The office staff checks on absentees and does all clerical work necessary to keep a school as large as NHS operating efficiently. When one of our custodians is absent, we quickly realize the important part these devoted workers play in keeping NHS beautiful. 10 Mr. B. Past Meets Present in Social Studies The main purpose of a history class is to help students of NHS gain a deeper knowledge of the social, political, cultural, and economic institutions of mankind, so that they will develop into dependable citizens and be of greater serv- ice to the community. No longer is a history class composed of boring facts about half-forgotten dates and battles. Today, this class teaches the students how to deal with future problems by studying the results of decisions made about problems similar to those with which we will be faced. We also study the way the United States government is handled, and receive a greater understanding of our federal, state, and local governments. Science, The Tool Of Understanding Mrs. Lois Brandt Biology Junior Sponsor Science and math arc a meaningful part of each student’s high school curriculum. This year the science and math departments moved to Gar- rison Hall, the new expansion of NHS. Our Band brings home many honors from the contests they attend. Nearly every day one can hear the grunts and groans of the students in the Physical Education Department, while they are working toward the goal of complete physical fitness. 18 Faithful Staff Maintain School’s Services “That Mr. Young knows I can’t take a quarter and a five cent stamp for that lunch,” thinks Mrs. Lou O’Pry, cashier, as Mrs. Lucille Willard works on. “Honest, Mr. Daniel, we weren’t sweeping the dirt under the waste basket. We’re just ...” Thinking a way out of this predicament are custodians, O. I). Flud, Alvis Jones, and Charles Hettinger. Important to the proper functioning of Nor- man High arc the cafeteria workers and the custodians, two groups dedicated to serving NHS. The great job of feeding many hungry stu- dents each dav is efficiently met by capable women, highly trained for this purpose. Responsible for waxing and sweeping the halls, cleaning rooms, and heating the school arc the custodians. This demanding job when done well is most appreciated and pleasantly accepted by the faculty and students of our fine school. The cafeteria workers were. First row: Georgia Rumfclr, Chloris Moody, Virginia Cox, Lcla Green, and Dane Dragoo. Second row: Lydia Webb, Alma Taylor, Lilian Ray, Lena Randolph. Pauline Vass, and cashiers Lucille Willard, and Lou O’Prv. 19 Students hurriedly leave the school at 3:30 and find their various ways home. “Oooo! Docs it bite?” Little Scott Powell views a poisonous spider under a microscope in one of the new science laboratories during the open house for the public. Mr. James Park looks on as John Powell and his family wait their turn. SCH001 22 “Oh Roy, Oh Roy, is zat yo’ hoss?” Sandra Busch and Ronnie Morris “rock it out” at the Howdy Hop to one of the popular songs of ’64. The student center buzzed with ex- citement during enrollment the last three days of August. 1EGINS School had started! The first weeks of school were devoted almost entirely to adjust- ment to a new building and new faces. Every Senior began the year with a feeling of owning the school, every Junior with a feel- ing of belonging and every Sophomore with a feeling of bewilderment. The first thing confronting the students was enrollment. To many it was a time of fun, but also to many it was a time for serious thinking. Next came the Howdy Hop, a time of dancing and getting to know everyone. On October 21, students served as guides for their parents at Norman High’s Open House. Vicki Raymond, Linda Dumas, Mary Martha Miles, and Veronia Farabcc look apprehensively at their schedules for the 1963-64 school year. 23 “Step it up, you guys, only twenty-three more miles to go!” bellows Jonathan Thayer, drum major, as the band leads the victory march toward Owen Stadium for our triumph over Nathan Hale High School. Tiger Spirit Reigns “Tigers Triumph” is a good way to sum up the 1963-64 football season. Not always were we victorious, but NHS spirits soared just the same. The Gingersnaps, band, student body, and administration went all the way to support our big team this year. Among others, one event to remember was a snake dance down Main Street followed by a great bonfire in the school parking lot. A traditional victory march was held before our victory over Nathan Hale High School. The pep assemblies brought skits, laugh- ter, veils, and encouraging speeches by the coaches and captains. Our award-winning band performed before games and during half-time shows. It was a great season and one to re- member. “Who’s da bum?” That’s Randy Glasscock alias Kathy Kuhlman at one of our “rip roaring” pep assemblies in the gym. FflACIlt 24 Tiger spirit is at its peak as Gar)' Wil- liams, Ken Danner, and Quentin Remy raise the victory flag to the enthusiastic chants of the student body after the XUS victory over the Putnam City Pirates. Gary Williams uses his destructive talents as he lights the bonfire where the Stillwater Pio- neers were burned in effigy in the school park- ing lot. Quentin Remv gives his support with a gas can. “Go Ye Tigers!” The tri-captains, Gary Wil- liams, Quentin Remv, and Ken Danner, lead Johnny Thompson, Lain Adkins, Larry Berg- lan, Carl Smith, Tom Kahan, and the rest of the s ]uad onto the field for the Capitol Hill game as the pep club cheers them on. 25 , bd in by 8:30.” Mother (Susan Wilson) warns Junior (Tony Zulc) in the Senior Class Play, “Harvey.” James Madden and Carol LcBlanc, top salesmen for “Har- vey,” try out their persuasive skills on an innocent by- ua 9 u-oi 0 V tou Were 'fp ' “Abner, will you please get off my toe!” wails Daisy Mae, Laura Williams to Gary Corrotto. “Hey! They must have salted the ice! discovered Susan Hallam and Sylvia Dumas. 26 Jane Meyer smiles radiantly as Jim Wells, “N” Club President, crowns her All-Sports Queen. 'art Of This Mrs. Mabel Ritzman makes up Gan Matthews Indian style for his role as Pappy Yokum in “Li’l Abner,” while Ginnie Hohenberger awaits her turn. 27 Tigers on to victory! Go! Go!” chant the chorus line, Mrs. Clco Mosley, Mrs. Linda Driskill, Mrs. Dajuana Jones, Miss Hope Wood, Mrs. Amalia Fast, Mrs. Virginia Hughes, and Mrs. Karen Mc- Guckin. “I Wanna Hold Your Hand! sings Jerri Jo Collins as Mrs. Lois Brandt and Betty Whitlock inspect Mr. Bones, and Earl Rolcy works diligently. But Mr. Upchurch, that’s not Donald Duck, that’s Mickey Mouse, corrects Carlos Droeschcr as Mr. Stanley Upchurch and his other students enjoy the cartoon. Cheryl Craig screams in excitement as she learns that she has been named All School Queen for 1963 64, while Paula Powers and Guyanne Calame join in her enthusiasm. Maria Kay Gill, Cheryl Gates, Linda Pratt, Cheryl Craig, Guyanne Calame, and Judy Miller display their marvelous talents in the Senior Talent Assembly. Terrific Tiger Talent The talent at Norman High School was revealed in the Senior Talent Assembly of 1963- 64. Promising talent also showed up in such places as the geometry and biology classes, and the teachers’ pep assembly. From present indi- cations, Norman High School students and teachers will go far in the field of talent. Cherry Kay Griffith arrives in her Dior original as Becky Berry looks on with awe. “Look! Up on the stage! It’s a bird, it’s a plane! No! It’s Big Daddy Grease and the Three Slicks!” Jim Lack, Larry Bcrglan, and James Strickland sing in the Senior Talent Assembly. I still don’t think ‘Return of The Zombies’ is a very good theme for the Prom,” says Laura Hill to Duane Draper and Ann Finney as James Elder expresses his views to an unseen party. The beautiful decorations of last year’s Prom, “Adventures in Paradise,” helped to make it a great success. ' ’63-’64 Draw The 1963-64 school year has had many joyous moments. The Senior Class Play, Harvey, and the All- School Musical, Li’I Abner, were en- acted with great skill and enthusiasm. The All-Sports Queen and All-School Queen coronations were beautiful and thrilling moments of the year. The Tigers soared to great heights in bask- etball, wrestling, and the other sports, winning the first annual Boomer Con- ference sportsmanship trophy. “There goes Mr. Young. Now I can give the ladder a little push!” thinks Roy Harkey as Vic Miller and Don Allen decorate the student center for a dance. “Jumping Jchoshaphats! Did you hear what he said? asks Ann Pilling of Steve YVelty, as Nancy Herrick, Chad Rockett, and Bill Reese show a good deal of interest in Gary Winters’ remark. l o A Close The Junior Class presented their Prom, “Camclot,” in a bright array of splendor. After the Prom came the end, Graduation. This has been a grand year at NHS and one you as Sen- iors will cherish as your last, you as Juniors as your breather between two wonderful years, and you as Sophomores as the beginning of your life in the home of the Tigers. A bird’s-eye view of a can of sardines? No, it’s our flying photographer’s view of the bleachers during an assembly. With tears and happiness they became our queens. Being a queen is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill which can come to only a chosen few. The girls thus honored most closely fulfill the dream of an ideal girl. Although they may differ considerably, they each possess the qualities of high character, outstanding ability, and true school spirit. More than this, they have a certain charm and grace which make each stand out as a true queen. From the theme “Mardi Gras,” of the all school coronation, to the enchanting theme “Twilight Time,” of the FFA coronation, you became a part of the honors of your school. Representing the entire student body as All-School Queen was Cheryl Craig. Jane Meyer was selected by the athletes from all the sports to be All-Sports Queen. FFA was well represented by Becky Berry. Farric Young was elected queen by the Distributive Education Club. 42 The queens for 1964 were Jane Meyer, All-Sports Queen; Cheryl Craig, All-School Queen; Farrie Young, Distributive Lducation Queen; and Becky Berry, Future Farmers of America Queen. Checking pages and planning were the basic jobs of Sponsor Richard B. Taylor and Editor Linda Pratr, who seem to have their work piling up on them. It wasn’t enough that we sold a hundred and some-odd ads. Now we have to cut them up and paste them in the dummy,” groan Co-Business Managers Carol Henderson and Judy Coles. “No, Donnie, I didn’t call you a ‘dummy!’ The dummy is the rough draft of the Trail,” Sara Culp, Sports Editor, explains to Don Harral. TRAIL Expands Lopping the agenda for the 1%4 Trail staff was work, work, work. Their goal was to publish the best Trail that ever lias been or ever will be distributed in Norman High School. The best possible quality paper was used this year, off-set printing replaced letterpress, and the book was expanded to one hundred and seventy-six pages. With the addition of a dark room in the new science building, the photographers not only took the pictures, but also developed and printed them. Pages were drawn up, pictures taken, copy written, ads sold, theme and cover design chosen, and editing and proof-reading com- pleted. All this and much more were the duties of the twenty-one hard-working peo- ple who created this book for you. Jim Shauberger works diligently at printing in the dark room. 48 “Now don’t forget, the picture must be in proportion to the page. Or is it the page must he in proportion to the picture?” Organizations Editor Ann Finney, center, teaches the art of cropping to Kay Snodgrass, Linda Kinnebrew, and Pam Oviatt. “Are you a l-2- girl? asks Richard Booker, photographer. Which do you like best, Mary, full length faces or full length dresses?” Maria Kay Gill, Honors Editor, uses cur outs to plan her queen pages with Mary Male’s helpful assistance. “Just tell me one more time. Do we or don’t we index teachers?” Barbara Wender wants to know. Jan Herron, Classes Editor, instructs Barbara and Melissa Martin in filing. I don’t think we have quite enough pictures,” Cathy 1 lolman tells Jayne Price, School Life Editor, who is trying to draw lip her pages. This year’s membership hit an all time high of 94. Nasr Boukadoum, an O.U. student from Algeria, spoke at a dinner attended by 73 members. A Bake Sale for the public netted over $90. The money raised will be added to a fund for either supporting a foreign orphan or a foreign ex- change student. Near Christmas time, members caroled in French, and had a party afterwards. The colorful orange and black trash cans around the buildings were painted by this organization. In October the “N” Club sponsored the exciting bonfire for the Stillwater game. The annual Christmas tree decorating was performed by the “N” Club members. In addition to selling the Tiger de- cals for cars, the lettermen also sold basketball programs at the home games. But, naturally, the organization is not all hard work. The members elected and crowned their beautiful All-Sports Queen, Jane Meyer, and sponsored a dance for the student body. Each boy uses the experience he receives by giving community service and working in the Farm Shop on his project. If they wish, the boys can enter their proj- ects in the County Fair and the Oklahoma State Fair. Each boy must enter the local livestock show in March. Acquainting aspiring students with the re- quirements, benefits, and responsibilities of a teacher in today’s world was the goal of the Future Teachers of America. This year, led by president Jon Thayer and sponsor Mrs. Mary Gatchcl, the Garrison Chapter boasted fifty-five members. In October, Norman High was the host school for the annual FTA Fall Leadership Con- vention. All members participated in this en- deavor. In November, the presidents of the Oklahoma Education Association and the Class- room Teachers Association spoke to the group about their respective organizations. To gain practical experience in teaching and to aid Nor- man High pupils needing help in their studies, the club set up a Students’ Assistance Program. Various speakers in the spring included Dr. Lloyd Williams, suggesting teachers’ role in the world today; Miss Sylvia Pittman, outlining teachers’ certificate requirements; and Mrs. Vir- ginia Bell and Mrs. Amalia Fast, discussing Eu- ropean education. To gain new pointers in leadership, the ’64 officers, officers-clect, and interested members attended the weekend Spring Convention at OSU. Celebrating a year of hard work, the FTA members held their annual May party. Mrs. Mary Gatchcl, sponsor, successfully guided the Future Teachers of America. Tigers Work Hard WhiL Norman High School football coaches arc (counter-clockwise) head coach Gene Corrotto; assistant coach Bert Corr; line coach Homer Simmons; assistant coach Dale Ernst; and backficld coach Wray Littlejohn. Faced from the beginning of the season with the realization that they could not go to State because of probationary actions, the Nor- man football team played every game with the determination and skill that is the mark of a Tiger. In our memories of the 1963-64 football season certain high and low points stand out. We will never forget our near victory over top ranked Lawton. They came from behind in the last minutes and beat us 13-8. The week after our shocking upset at Ardmore, we rose above expectations and trounced state-final bound Tulsa Hale, 34-6, in our last game of the sea- son. Having more than our share of injuries throughout the season, we ended up with a 5-4-1 record. Four Norman Tigers were named to the Boomer Conference All Star first team. Quentin Rcmy, halfback, and Randy Glasscock, guard, were named to the offensive team and Gordon Will, linebacker, and Bud McDaniel, tackle, were named to the defensive team. Fourteen other Tigers were given honorable mention. 94 Looking quite out of place is manager Earl Butts with the team huddled behind him. Winning Five Games Eating a much deserved meal after the game with Del City arc Larry Bcrglan, David Behrman and Quentin Remy along with the other team members. Marvin Daniels goes after a pass interception in the Putnam City game with help from Bud McDaniel. Running in place was part of the program for Norman tice preparing for the season. Rushing in to join in the pile up is number 63, Randy Glasscock. 97 Running around right end is Quentin Remy in the last game of the season against Tulsa Hale. Tiger Cagers Give Pride to Norman Coach Chet Bryan’s cagers closed out an- other successful season with a 20-4 record, wind- ing up with a 37-34 loss to Midwest Citv in the semi-finals of the State Class AA Basketball Tourney. The Tigers forged their shiny record with only one returning starter from the 1963 champion squad. All the teams that defeated the Tigers won berths in the state tournament. Rick Kersey, 6'-7 senior center and the Tiger scoring chief for three years, finished with the lead in every department of final statistics. Scoring 1153 points in his entire career, he broke a school record. He was voted Boomer Confer- ence Player of the Year, and also was awarded All-State honors. Junior Bill Tankcrsley was the only other Tiger on the Boomer Conference All-Star first team, but senior Sandy McGee was chosen on the second team. 99 Junior Don Wilcox sinks in another two points while Bill Tankcrslcy and Bill Cook prepare for a rebound. Baseball Team Bats Through Season Since only a few starters graduated, the Norman High baseball team had high hopes for the 1964 season. After having their first four games canceled because of bad weather, the Tigers trounced Putnam City 8-0 in their opener. Delmar Dean pitched this two-hit game. Coach Jim Park’s third year at the helm of the team was highlighted by much spirit and enthusiasm. A fine pitching staff, led by Delmar Dean, Greg Akard, Glen Miller, and sophomore Steve Ayers, promised to guide the Tigers on the road to many victories. The majority of the team was made up of juniors and sophomores, so things look bright for next year. Junior Fred Christian, Tiger first baseman, shows his ability at the plate. The Tiger baseball team rests between innings of their first home double-header with Anadarko. 103 Norman High’s first State Wrestling Champion is 156 pounder Bud McDaniel. NHS Wrestling The 1964 Wrestling team has given Nor- man High students another reason to be proud of our school. Led by Coach Bert Corr, the team won nine out of ten dual meets, and went on to win two trophys, 31 medals, and one state championship. The team had three fourth place winners at the State Tournament which were Sophomore Bobby Waters has a head lock on a fellow 106 pound grappler. 104 Dickey Dilks, 136 pound Tiger Captain, tries for a five point pin on a U. The high point wrestler of the year was Captain Dickey Dilks. Although some outstanding Senior grapplers arc graduating, many Juniors and Sophomores are well prepared to take over the leading ranks and promise to produce an excellent 1965 team. Tom White, a fourth place winner at State, appears to be deciding what to do next. Mounting up on riding time is 147 pound Clarence Powell, as he keeps control of his opponent. U.’s Owen Stadium. ’64 Track-Terrific A new spirit and enthusiasm has followed the Norman thinclads on their journey through the 1964 season. The Tiger trackmen, coached by Bob Williams, proudly represented Norman at meets all over the state and one at Fort Worth where almost all the teams in the Southwest participated. The third annual Norman Invi- tational had the longest list of entrants ever, 38 in all. Also, the track team participated in many dual and triangular meets. With much speed and skill going for them, the Tigers were a defi- nite threat for top State honors. Junior high-jumper Don Farris proves that every thing that goes up must come down. Quentin Remy receives one of the many ribbons he has earned this year by run- ning his specialty, the hurdles. The 1964 Track team was. First row.
