SPECIAL YEAR . THE TRAIL NINETEEN FIFTY-NINE VOLUME FIFTY-THREE NORMAN HIGH SCHOOL NORMAN, OKLAHOMA !- ?nb A Very S p TllMRIMRin . . . In time, every person turns and looks back, perhaps to his early child- hood, his college years, but most fre- quently to the few years he spent in high school. The mingled emotions and memories of carefree laughter, the joy of success, the brightness of tears, ORGANIZATIONS ... 54 HONORS ... 98 the hope, fear, pride, and excitement of living, flood back. One sensation, greater than all the rest, shines like a bright star in a velvety sky—that of a special time, a special place, a special thing that brightens into something far greater—a very special year. -f THE THEME The creation of a memory is fashioned by many hands. The memory of the year 1958-1959 has been built by an abundance of special events. The cries of victory echo as the Norman football team placed second in the Boomer conference. The basketball team remaining undefeated in conference play, went on to win the state championship. A burst of spirit was shown in en- thusiastic support of each class Trail queen candidate and Juniors determined to have the best prom. A proud band attended the Orange Bowl. The Seniors filled their time with the excitement that only the last year can bring. The memories of this year keep their freshness just a moment longer and a shade brighter in a record of A VERY SPECIAL YEAR. -MARILYN MORRISON The 1959 Trail Editor, Marilyn Morrison MISS FLORENCE PEVEHOUSE Dedication it As we finish the last chapters of a year, we pause to think of a very special person, a person whose qualities have given her the love and honor of Norman High. As a teacher, she is an inspiration. Her efforts have brought scholarship and have kindled the excitement of learning. As a leader, she is an ideal. Under her care has grown the largest organization in our school and within it glows the spirit she has given meaning to. As a person, she is a symbol, a symbol of unselfish generosity to people. Without reserve she has given her all to Norman High. And so with love and pride, we salute and dedicate this 1959 Trail to Miss Florence Pevehousc. , % ■fr [7] CLASSES Staff Works Hard Mr. B. Roy Daniel Principal Behind the face of a school there arc many intricate jobs carried on by a hard-working group, commonly called the office staff. The staff is headed by our principal, Air. B. Roy Daniel. His constant work has made Norman High School one of the outstanding schools in the country. It is known far and wide for its scholarship and activities. Norman High is proud of its principal and the work he has done. Mr. Daniel is assisted by Mr. Ansel Young who is the vice prin- cipal. Board Solves Problems The many problems of the active schools of Nor- man arc solved by a group of men and women who form the School Board. With the addition of a new junior high and several grade schools, the fine work of the School Board is shown. They have combined the support of the Norman townspeople with an out- standing teaching staff to give their town one of the best educational programs in the country. The full future of the young • people of Norman may be credited to the work of the School Board. Mr. J. Ambitions made long ago arc completed. The doors close on care-free times and the future stretches on ahead. I he 1959 Seniors have many accomplishments on their record. An outstanding Senior play, “The Des- perate Hours,” the Senior assembly, and a spirited campaign for their Trail Queen candidate arc on the list of successes. A year full of events and excitements is climaxed by the parties and programs of graduation. The last Junior-Senior prom and the graduation dance and breakfast completes a wonderful year. Ab, come on boys, I'm not really that cute. Ann Sneed turns away from the admiring glances of William Bcrgland, Bill 0 r- l ctr, Bart Stephenson, Jimmy Turner, and Alike Ayers. Homework hit with its heavy blow and the necessity of good grades became clear. I aking it all in stride, the Freshmen passed through an exciting year. Mr. W. C. Robinson, shows the first place trophy the NHS Band won for outstanding marching. Band Marches On Norman High's Band went far this year, not only in honors and accomplishments, but also in travels. “Sunny Florida” greeted the bandsmen on their trip to the Orange Bowl where they marched in the fab- ulous Orange Bowl Parade. As always the band did their town and state proud in their snappy perform- ance. The trip will not soon be forgotten by any that participated. But this didn't curtail the activities of the band for the remainder of the year at all. High- est honors were achieved in the State Marching Con- test, District, State, and Tri-State G ntcsts for con- cert bands, besides attending the Oklahoma City Uni- versity Band Clinic, winning the State Fair Parade, and presenting three concerts. Nine and eighteen members respectively were accepted to the All-State Orchestra and All-State Band. Band Officers Band Council First raw: Pat GiU, Trudy Lee. Roger McGuckin, Marilyn Morrison. Their new coach. Gene Corrotto, molded a team feared by opposing teams. Corrotto's Tigers carved out an 8-1-1 record and wound up second in the conference and eleventh in the state. They had three Tigers placed on the All-Confer- ence first team and two on the second star squad. Jay Wilkinson was named Boomer Conference Play- er of the Year, and Bobby Jacobs and Wayne Car- gill joined him on the All-Conference team. Gary Rawlinson and Larry Pannell took second-berth hon- ors. John Dragoo was placed at end on the first team defensively. The Tigers opened with a decisive 35-0 trouncing of Seminole at Owen Stadium. Bobbv Jacobs scored two touchdowns and carried for 110 yards. In the second game it was Wilkinson’s passing and Jacob’s receiving that caned the victory over Pauls Valley, 38-0. Jacob’s scored four touchdowns. In the third game, Norman had three touchdowns called back, but just repeated the feat by beating Enid 21-6. Enid became the first opponent to score on Norman.
