Backgrounds Differ To say that Norman High School teachers have a varied background is the understatement of the year. Skivey Davis has served as football coach, athletic director, and drivers' training instructor during his many years at NHS, while Mrs. Wini- frede Williams, commercial teacher, holds the rec- ord of being the longest employed at NHS. Mrs. Mosley, the present librarian, began her busy career in 1931 when she came to serve as librarian, registrar, and girls' phys ed teacher. Most of the teachers can quote similar achievements. Many of the NHS teachers have received various and wide experience by teaching in high schools and colleges all over the United States. Miss Searcy and Miss Sugden taught at OU be- fore coming to NHS, and Mr. Brothers moved to NHS after a career of coaching at Tulsa Univer- sity. Miss Runyan, during a leave of absence dur- ing the war, was an instructor in aeronautics at Tinker Field. Thus are a few of the qualifications of NHS's faculty, ranging from collegiate coaching to war time special instruction. Mr. Michael instructs embryo projectionists. Mathematics Theorems, postulates, constructions, and formulae! Norman High School math courses range from algebra through plane and solid geometry and trigonometry—all present a real challenge to the talented students. Math is the key to the engineering and technical problems which will occupy so much of tomorrow’s attention. It may well be the base on which the success of the future will depend. MRS. Recognition Received Through hard work and skill, many Norman High School teachers have brought fame to the school both through personal achievements and the achievements of the organizations they spon- sor. Although it is impossible to give a complete list of awards won and deserved, these are a few of the ones that will longest be remembered: The Band, sponsored by Mr. W. C. Robinson, has brought national fame to Norman High. Last year it was picked as one of the eight bands in the United States to attend the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. The art classes, conducted by Mrs. Alice Fleming, have brought many awards home to Norman High from contests in Edmond, Oklahoma City, and Pittsburg. The music depart- ment, under the direction of Mr. Roland Earsom, attends several contests each year over the state and always returns with high ratings. Last spring they were guests at the Highland Park Music Festival in Dallas. The FFA and FHA have an- nually won various prizes at the county and state fairs. To catch a thief.” Fine Arts Brushes, drums, dabs, and notes! Cre- ative students find many outlets for their talents through instrumental and vocal music and art courses at Norman High. Many students have won national recogni- tion in these fields. Tomorrow's creative designers will undoubtedly come from classes such as these, but the majority of students will remember these classes as a doorway to enjoyment. MRS. F. K. MOSLEY MISS FLORENCE MR.
