In our new building with its conveniences and advantages of education we are all reminded of the challenge which faces u$: to carry out our highest ideals in the world of tomorrow. With this in mind the staff felt it would be most appropriate to select Tomorrow” to carry out the theme for the yearbook. With the foot- steps of the past behind us and the glory of the future ahead of us the staff pre- sents the ’56-’57 Trail to Tomorrow.” —Mary Jane Newsom It is entirely appropriate that in this To- morrow” Trial the dedication should go to one who has given so much to the citi- zens of tomorrow. Since coming to the school in 1931 she has given unstintingly of her time in her efforts to help students of the school. Her perpetual support has had much to do with the success of the Student Council, and her untiring efforts have gone far to make the school library a place in which students may carry on serious study. Thus it is with humble hearts that we dedicate this 1957 Trial to Mrs. Frank Mosley, our beloved Cleo. Members of the Board of Education arc. left to right: Mrs. S. B. Spradlin, clerk; Mr. E. F. McComb; Dr. Curtis Bern-; Mr. J. Don Garrison; Mr. Lynn Bullard; president; Mr. O. L. Harris, and Mr. O. T. McCall School board plans far ahead to keep pace Its no pun to say the school board faces a constantly growing problem. In common with most cities, Norman has found itself with more students than room. But with the completion of the high school addition and recent work at Junior High and on grade schools, at least a short breather is hoped for. Future problems will receive the same careful consideration of this group of unselfish men who give of their time to administer the city's active schools. MR. J. DON GARRISON Superintendent 10 The year 1956-57 represents Mr. B. Roy Daniel’s fourth year as principal of Norman High School. He is known all over the state for his skill in administration. Always alert for any opportunity to promote the reputation of Nor- man and its schools, he is equally anxious to in- crease the efficiency of the students and faculty. Faced this year by crowded conditions and con- struction, Mr. Daniel spent many hours work- ing out solutions. Mr. Daniel is assisted in his work by Mr. Ansel Young, Vice Principal. with Norman’s growing population MR. ANSEL YOUNG, Vice Principal Mrs. June Vernon and Mrs. Thelma Gott. Attendance and Registrar. II Offerings Vary Norman High School offers its students a total of more than fifty courses in nine major fields of learning. Every student is required to complete eighteen units including English, his- tory, mathematics, science, and physical educa- tion. Our excellent faculty consists of almost forty members who not only teach but also engage in such activities as writing novels and textbooks, painting, singing, administering a community- summer play program, direct selling, and con- structing their own homes — all this in addition to the expected activities of travel, study, and tutoring. Emily Post couldn't do better. Mrs. Robinson. 12 Science Experiments, problems, frogs, fish, and worms! Budding scientists at NHS may choose from biology, chemistry, physics, and two near-science courses, home-eco- nomics and agriculture. MRS. BERNICE MR. J. O. BROTHERS ARMSTRONG History. Coach Nurse In today's and tomorrow's world, the scientist is among the most important of all persons, and here in Norman future scientists arc molded to fit their future destiny. v MR. C. C. Tomorrow, as a student and citizen, Norman High School graduates will prize the ability to understand what they read and say what they think. MRS. W. L. MR. A. R. DAVIS MRS. H. C. MR. ROLAND EARSOM CHILDS Drivers' Training DAVIS Vocal Music English Commercial Education 13 Backgrounds Differ To say that Norman High School teachers have a varied background is the understatement of the year. Skivey Davis has served as football coach, athletic director, and drivers' training instructor during his many years at NHS, while Mrs. Wini- frede Williams, commercial teacher, holds the rec- ord of being the longest employed at NHS. Mrs. Mosley, the present librarian, began her busy career in 1931 when she came to serve as librarian, registrar, and girls' phys ed teacher. Most of the teachers can quote similar achievements. Many of the NHS teachers have received various and wide experience by teaching in high schools and colleges all over the United States. Miss Searcy and Miss Sugden taught at OU be- fore coming to NHS, and Mr. Brothers moved to NHS after a career of coaching at Tulsa Univer- sity. Miss Runyan, during a leave of absence dur- ing the war, was an instructor in aeronautics at Tinker Field. Thus are a few of the qualifications of NHS's faculty, ranging from collegiate coaching to war time special instruction. Mr. Michael instructs embryo projectionists. Mathematics Theorems, postulates, constructions, and formulae! Norman High School math courses range from algebra through plane and solid geometry and trigonometry—all present a real challenge to the talented students. Math is the key to the engineering and technical problems which will occupy so much of tomorrow’s attention. It may well be the base on which the success of the future will depend. MRS. ALICE FLEMING Art MR. ARNOLD HIGGINS Chemistry, Biology MR. H. C. LAND Biology, Physics MR. WRAY LITTLEJOHN Industrial Arts, Coach MR. J. R. LOWE English. Journalism If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, advises Mr. Bumgarner to Richard Freeman. Industrial Arts Sawdust, glue, leather, and spcedball pen! Students interested in industrial training and potential hobbies find at Norman High Mechanical Drawing, Shop, and Craft courses. Skilled artisans and technicians of the future may well begin a career in such classes. Drivers' training, a distant relation to vocational courses, helps students be- come successful drivers. MR. H. W. MACKEY MRS. E. L. MARTI MR. FORD MICHAEL Vocational Agriculture English Mathematics 15 Recognition Received Through hard work and skill, many Norman High School teachers have brought fame to the school both through personal achievements and the achievements of the organizations they spon- sor. Although it is impossible to give a complete list of awards won and deserved, these are a few of the ones that will longest be remembered: The Band, sponsored by Mr. W. C. Robinson, has brought national fame to Norman High. Last year it was picked as one of the eight bands in the United States to attend the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. The art classes, conducted by Mrs. Alice Fleming, have brought many awards home to Norman High from contests in Edmond, Oklahoma City, and Pittsburg. The music depart- ment, under the direction of Mr. Roland Earsom, attends several contests each year over the state and always returns with high ratings. Last spring they were guests at the Highland Park Music Festival in Dallas. The FFA and FHA have an- nually won various prizes at the county and state fairs. To catch a thief.” Fine Arts Brushes, drums, dabs, and notes! Cre- ative students find many outlets for their talents through instrumental and vocal music and art courses at Norman High. Many students have won national recogni- tion in these fields. Tomorrow's creative designers will undoubtedly come from classes such as these, but the majority of students will remember these classes as a doorway to enjoyment. MRS. F. K. MOSLEY MISS FLORENCE MR. S. L. POWELL MRS. WILSON Librarian PEVEHOUSE Industrial Arts RILEY Latin Spanish, English MRS. CARL RITZMAN Speech, English 16 Seek and ye shall find, is James McCreary’s method, though Mrs. Williams protests. Commercial Arts Keys, symbols, erasers, and bells, bells, bells! Practical-minded pupils receive training in bookkeeping, typing, short- hand, as preparation for immediate oc- cupations. Tomorrow's business positions will be filled by today's forward-looking students who prepare themselves for a career in commerce. MRS. J. H. MR. W. C. MRS. INEZ ROBINSON ROBINSON ROLETTE English, Home Ec Band Home Economics Clubs Take Time Faculty members are indirectly responsible for all the extracurricular activities at the school. Most students realize that if it were not for the teachers who are willing to give of their time and energy to sponsor the various school organizations, N.H.S would be made up of all cake and no frost- ing. Among the most active organizations and clubs are found Student Council and Library Club sponsored by Mrs. Mosley, the Trail and Tiger Tales sponsored by Mr. Lowe, the Gingersnaps sponsored by Mrs. Walker and Miss Pevehouse, the Band sponsored by Mr. Robinson, and the Choruses sponsored by Mr. Earsom. From Ginger- snaps, with 200 members, to the smallest of the clubs, the problems are similar and the rewards are great for both members and sponsors. Space alone prohibits a complete listing, for every group has its own important place in N.H.S. Frosty, man, frosty! Physical Education Running, jumping, throwing, and fall- ing! All students in Norman High have the opportunity to participate in a physi- cal education program designed to build healthy bodies and good sportsmanship. Students who take part in competitive activities whether intramural or inter- school arc receiving experiences which will better fit them to successfully com- pete in the world of tomorrow. 18 MISS NADINE MISS LUCILE MRS. ROBINSON Director Band Wins Top State Contests One of the best known state bands is our Norman High School Band. Under the leadership of Mr. W. C. Robinson these sixty band students have carried away highest honors in both marching and concert contests. The band won the first place trophy in the Mid-West city marching contest and participated in the O.C.U. Band Clinic and the Band Day at O.U. They received high ratings in the District, State and Tri-State Contests, and sent several chosen bandsmen to represent Norman in the All State Band and Orchestra. The band contributed much of its time and talents to Norman High by playing and performing at the football and basket- ball games and also to the city of Norman by playing for the Halloween and Christmas Parades. Directed by Mrs. Alice Fleming, the art classes have worked in wood carv- ing, clay sculpturing, portraits, and post- ers for civic projects. Various students have painted scenery for school plays, worked on jewelry, linoleum blocks, and copper tooling, and have attended several art exhibits over the state. About fifteen of these students are members of the Paint Daubers, the Norman High art club in which they carry on individual projects. 60 Framing pictures, posters, and people are art students Ronnie Sulivan, Trcssa Ward, Jo Ann Dees, Larry Oliver and Jerry Whistler. The club, made up of students in Spanish, was organized to let the stu- dents grow familiar with Spanish customs, games, dances, and songs, as well as the language. At the annual Christmas party the members played .these games and songs with the main event of the evening being the traditional pinata. After the Spanish Queen coronation in April, the club members attended the Pan-Am- erican Fiesta at Oklahoma University where Timmie was a candidate for Fiesta Queen. As in the preceding year, the Tigers hit their peak in non-conference play with a 3-1 1 record against foreign foes, but again failed to win a game in the extra tough Boomer Conference. The new coaching staff of J. O. (Buddy) Broth- ers, head coach, and Harry Cheadle and Wray Littlejohn, assistants, was greeted with twenty- three injuries, at least one to almost every player. From the season’s opener with Seminole to the finale against Duncan, the coaches were not able to watch a single game without seeing one of their stalwarts being helped off the field. The Tigers began the season in fine form by defeating the Seminole Chieftains 20-0 at Owen Field. Norman’s Alan Grubb to Frank Swafford pass combination was the Tiger’s big offensive weapon, while David Rice was the leader on de- fense. Journeying to Pauls Valley the following week, the Bengals were trounced by All-Stater Phil Loh- mann and company 38-13. At Enid the Bengals scored in the second quar- ter on a fourth down sweep by Donnie Magers, but the Plainsmen duplicated this feat in the last half to emerge with a 7-7 tie. The El Reno Indians, who later became state runners-up, invaded Norman the following week- end and emerged with a 23-14 victory. The game also cost the Tigers senior quarterback and co- captain Alan Grubb, who was disabled for the season with a broken arm. The Bengals next invaded Lawton, home of the state’s number one team, and brought local fans hope early in the game by scoring the first touch- down. Then Lawton retaliated with a 48 point blitzkrieg to overpower the Tigers. Rising to new heights, the Normanites upset the previously undefeated John Marshall Bears at Taft Stadium on a rainy Thursday night. The Tigers' big play of the game was an eighty-nine yard pass play from promising junior quarterback Ansil Ludwig to end Harold Vaughan. Junior fullback Pat Wilkinson is pulled down after a short gain. A tense moment in the John Marshall game. All-State end Frank Coaches Harry Cheadle, J. O. Donnie Magers led the winners by scoring four touchdowns during the decisive victory. Riding too high, the Normanites were rudely dumped at Chickasha the following Friday to the tune of 33-20. Frank Swafford and Pat Wilkinson played a fine game for the Tigers, but the line collapsed to let the Chickasha backs slip through for five touchdowns. Returning to Norman, the Tigers met powerful Ardmore, defending Boomer Conference cham- pion, and came out on the wrong end of a 33-13 score. The Tigers from the south simply out- manned the local Bengals. The Norman season came to a close against the Duncan Demons, who defeated the Tigers 37-6. Looking good in the first half, the Bengals collapsed in the final two periods to let the De- mons score four times. At the close of the season, honors were passed out, and the Tigers fared well. Stellar end Frank Avid interest shows in the faces of managers Doug Fea- ver, Jimmy Armstrong and Earl Simpson as they clean out a locker. 3-6-1 Record Swafford was selected to The Daily Oklahoman All-State team. Frank and tackle Joe Straw were chosen for all-conference honors, while Swafford made The Duncan Banner All-Southern squad. Tiger prospects for 1957 are fair, with ten let- termen returning. Junior lettermen returning are: Howard Black, Ray Goldsby, Jerry Harmon, Elton Johnson, Ansil Ludwig, David Rice, Pat Wilkin- son, and Duane Will. Sophomores returning are Wayne Argo and Larry Pannell, who was selected as the most improved player on the squad this year. Compiling an eighteen-game winning streak, the Tigers swept to the Boomer Conference championship and won the University of Oklahoma Baseball Tournament, the largest of its kind in the world. John Woodall, pitcher, and Larry Coffey, infielder, were named to the South All-State team, which was coached by Chet Bryan, Norman mentor. Prospects for this year's team were considered rather uncertain; however, Mr. Bryan has never failed to field a winning team at Norman High.
