Since the inauguration of the concept of education, learning has been valued by some, mistrusted by others, and sometimes ignored . . . nevertheless, education has continuously struck at the properties of the world's misunderstanding in an attempt to liberate men from doubt and guilt, from fear and prejudice, and from ig- norance . . . a college gathers the attention of youth and focuses it on the fascinating network of human in- terpretation and manipulation in the world that man has created . . . it helps to classify the needs and chal- lenges . . . helps to underline the need for definition . . . and recognition . . . then redefinition . . . a college teaches youth to ask why and then never to be satisfied . . . a college awakens men to a faith that they can be taught . . . can be led to a knowledge of what to do and how to do it . . . can be led to search honestly into their motivations and conduct . . . and to love men wisely il' the world of the college campus is a societal unit bringing many people together . . . an aggregation of personalities . . .
