Some of us maybe relieved and glad that those four years are in the past. The majority of us. I'm sure, feel sad when we realize that they are gone forever. But regardless of our feelings, each and every one of us has had some happy and some tearful memories to recall to us the years we have spent at Norfolk Senior High School. They maintained this ambition throughout the years, striving to make their class one of the finest ever. As freshmen, they participated in many school activities, including die freshman class picnic, which was enjoyed by all. When they became sophomores, they gained confidence by participating more actively in sports, music, debate, Y-clubs, and cheerleading. Of course, they will always remember the fun at the sophomore picnic. As juniors they proved their power of endurance by tying the Hare and Hound Race. The year was filled with routine studying and school activities, including die hilarious presentation of WHAT A LIFE, their class play. Come to the Mardi Gras was the intriguing theme of a spectucular Jr. -Sr. Prom, sponsored oy this industrious class. Representatives to Girls' and Boys’ State were Keralyn Clark, Sandra Atkinson, Wayne Robertson, and Warren Danskin. A successful senior year opened with the Hare and Hound Race victory over the Juniors. Outof this class came a large share of an outstanding football team, with the rest of the class there to cheer them on to greater accomplishments. They supported not only sports, but band, choir, die Prom, Sneak Day, Field Day, Senior Day, their class play, and last but certainly not least, the coveted goal—Commencement. You can tease all you like, hut these fellows deserve a big hand for all the support they've given to N.H.S. activities. It's a thankless job, selling cards for sport events, but it certainly boosts school spirit. At the 1955-56 homecoming ceremony, they were on hand to crown the royalty and they assisted with the crowning of the Sport’s King and Queen. The Minute Men also deserve a lot of thanks for helping with Teacher's Convention and for working at the basketball games. A spring dance was under the sponsorship of the second semester Minute Men. BAND Here comes the Band! , was the cry of many enthusiasts last fall, as the Norfolk Senior High School Band opened its marching season with various shows and precision drills at football games. Many fine compliments were paid the band on its appearance and performance at the annual Band Day at the University of Nebraska. The band also paraded for the Karl Stefan Memorial Ceremonies and led the Veteran's Day Parade in Norfolk. The first appearance of the concert band, under the fine direction of Merton V. Welch assisted by James Johnson, was at the second session of the 1955 District III Teachers Convention. A ChristmasCon-cert was given before a packed house of high school students, alumni, and parents. OnFebruary 14, 1956, the band presented its annual Winter Concert. Then, on April 20, 1956, the band gave a concert at the city auditorium with Rafael Mendez, the famous Mexican trumpeter, as guest soloist. The annual Band Festival was presented to the public in May of this year. The grade school, junior high, senior high, and junior college bands participated in this event. Jan Nisker, Oakley Riggert, and Tim Adamsrep-resented the band at the State Music Clinic which was held at Hastings. This year's band had a total enrollment of 107, the largest band in the history of the school. Band officers included: drum major, Tom Ingham; secretary; Audrey Miller; and uniform custodian, Carol Muf-fly, assisted by Sandra Atkinson. Twirlers were Karen Hoffman, Jean Brase, Ruby Pennewell, and Dawn Hammond. A bass clarinet and five new uniforms were added to the band’s equipment. A faithful Pep Band was on hand to provide plenty of pep and spirit at rallies and basketball games. 65 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ORCHESTRA First row: Lynn Gomon, Dawn Hammond, Sharon Harmel, Glenn Schultz. The team of 1955 not only won consistently and proved to themselves and everyone else that they could win, but they also set an example for the underclassmen to follow in the football season of 1956. Six members of this year's team were on the Big Ten Honor Roll. Duane Gugat made the first team at tackle, Tom Best at halfback, and Bill Callies at guard. Louis Paulson, Jim Benson, and Wayne Robertson received honorable mention. Gugat, Best, and Callies also received All-State recognition. Brandenburg Adams Benson Best Blake man Brennan Bricker Bush Callies Cannon NORFOLK 6 VALENTINE 0 The Panthers started their 1955 football season by edging Valentine 6-0. The lone Norfolk score came in the fourth quarter when the Panthers took over the ballon downs on their 35-yard line. They then marched 65 yards to the end zone in 13 plays. Bill Callies broke over right guard and ran the last 8 yards with a Valentine defender hanging onto one leg. The Panthers fumbled 4 times and lost the ball all 4 times. The Panthers big asset was their defense. They threw Valentinefora lossof 32 yards rushing. Tom Best and Louis Paulson were the stars for Norfolk on defense. NORFOLK 7 FREMONT 14 The next week the Panthers entertained Fremont at Norfolk and were beaten by two first quarter touchdowns. The first Fremont score came after Norfolk was in punt formation and a bad pass from center flew over the head of the punter and Fremont recovered on the Panther 15 yard line. Fremont passed on the second down and went all the way. Fremont’s second touchdown came late in the first quarter as a result of a 59-yard march in 11 plays. The Panthers scored midway in the third quarter when Bill Kuester ran the keeper play for 5 yards and into the end zone. The Panthers covered 66 yards in 12 plays for the score. Bill Callies charged over right guard for extra point. The Panthers threatened to score several times more but a stiff Fremont line halted them. The Norfolk standouts on defense were Wayne Robertson, Callies, Louis Paulson, and Tom Best. The offensive stars were Best, Paulson, and Kuester. Christofferson Danskin DeHaes Emrich Gettman 87 Gugat Koster Hoppel Johnson Koerting NORFOLK 14 SOUTH SIOUX CITY 6 The Panthers had to be content with a 14-6 margin of victory over South Sioux City, although the margin couldhave been much more impressive. Twice the Panthers fumbled and lost the ball on the Red Bird 5-yard line The Panthers fumbled7 times and lost the ball 4 times. Early in the first quarter, the Panthers scored after an 83-yard drive in 15 plays. Tom Best carried the ball over from the two yard line. Bill Callies went over standing up for the extra point. The second Panther score came after a 34-yard drive in 11 plays. Bill Kuester ran the option play for 9 yards and a touchdown. Louis Paulson kicked the extra point. The Cardinals then got angry and drove 67 yards to a score climaxed by a 10 yard end run. The Norfolk defensive standouts were Wayne Robertson, Jim Benson, and Dick Sydow. NORFOLK 26 LINCOLN SOUTHEAST 0 The Panthers, keyed up by the win over South Sioux City, traveled to Lincoln and blasted Lincoln Southeast 26-0. It was the widest margin for Norfolk since a 27-0 win over Fremont in 1945. The win gave the Panthers 3 victories and one defeat. The Norfolk team has not won 3 out of the first 4 games since 1944. The Norfolk scoring was done by Tom Best on 15 and 27 yard runs, Bill Callies on a 6 yard run, and Larry Olson on a 4 yard run. The extra points were made by Bill Kuester on the keeper play and Callies on a plunge. The Panther crew was able to stop most anything Southeast had to offer. The defensive stars for Norfolk were Louis Paulson and Ronnie Hoppel. Kuester Meierhenry Olson Paulson Price 88 Putnam Rasley Robertson Salter Schlecht NORFOLK 0 GRAND ISLAND 18 Norfolk traveled to Grand Island and gave G. I. a stiff battle but lost 18-0. The Panther team held the Islanders to 5 first downs and picked up 5 itself. The Panthers forced the Islanders to punt 6 times. The Panthers punted 8 times. One of the chief reasons for Norfolk's stubborn stand was the defensive play of Louis Paulson. He made some earth-shattering tackles. The line also looked impressive on defense. The Islanders had trouble getting anywhere through the center of the Panther line. Larry Olson also made some inspired tackles. It all boils down to the factthat the Panthers were beaten but notwhipped, thrashed, and slaughtered as they have been in the past. The usual margin of victory for the Islanders is from 30 to 40 points. Norfolk played one of its best games of the season in the encounter. NORFOLK 13 HASTINGS 12 The Panthers pleased a large homecoming crowd by defeating Hastings 13-12 at Memorial Field. Norfolk fumbled 10 times but didn't lose the ball once. Hastings fumbled 6 times and lost the ball 5 times. The first Norfolk touchdown came in the second quarter with Bill Kuester carrying the ball over from the 2-yard line. The try for extra point was stopped short. The second Panther score came in the third quarter with Kuester running the keeper play for 10 yards and a touchdown. Louis Paulson kicked the extra point which proved to be the margin of victory for die Panthers. Hastings scored on a long pass and on a blocked Norfolk punt. The Norfolk offensive stars were Kuester, Paulson, Tom Best, and Bill Callies. The defensive standouts were Paulson, Best, Koerting, Benson, and Gugat. Both teams played a scoreless first quarter. Midway in the second quarter, after receiving a Columbus punt, the Panthers took over the ball on the Columbus 28 yard line. Seven plays later George Blakeman crashed over from five yards out. The try for extra point by Louis Paulson was blocked. With 2:32 gone in the third quarter. Blakeman scored again. This time heran 14 yards climaxing an 81-yard march. Paulson kicked the extra point. The Panthers' other two scores came on short plunges by Paulson and Bill Kuester. Paulson kicked one more extra point. The lone Columbus score came in the fourth quarter when a Columbus player picked up a fumble and ran 18 yards to pay din. The Norfolk touchdowns were scored by Bill Kuester, Louis Paulson, Tom Best, Larry Olson, George Blakeman, and Jim Benson. Paulson and Mike Johnson each scored one extra point. Yankton scored in the second quarter when halfbackDave Bride crashed over from the one yard line. Bride scored the extra point with aperfect place-kick. Several times during the game a Norfolkend would break into the clear only to be overthrown by the passer.
