As freshmen they were green but nonetheless willing to learn. There were many participants to be found in the various school activities—band, glee clubs, choir, as well as football, basketball, and track. At the Freshman-Sophomore picnic, the class of '55 held their own. By the fall of their sophomore year, the class of '55 had proved themselves and eagerly joined in the spirit of NHS. They rang off the year by serving at the Junior-Senior Prom and participating in the Sophomore picnic. Then they were juniors and worthy of being called upperclassmen. The class play, Who Killed Aunt Caroline? proved a success and set the class of '55 as a great up-and-coming group. The Hare and Hound Race was lost cheerfully and closely. The Junior-Senior Prom proved a huge success with An Evening In Paris as its theme. Boys' and Girls' Staters were chosen—Jerry Sellentin, George Kessels, Barbara Siecke and Ann Hale. Then at last they were seniors and reigned over the school. The Hare and Hound Race was tied but proved to be fun anyway. The Homecoming Queen was Lynne Henning and Attendants, Marilynn Hash and Ann Hale. Field Day and Sneak Day were enjoyed by all. Now they are waiting to receive their diplomas which will ring down the curtain of their high school career. Sophomore Class Looking scornfully at the freshmen and with awe at the upperclassmen best describes Norfolk's class of 1957, the sophomores. Starting the year off with elections, the sophomores chose Wava Henry and George Blakeman as their representatives on the Student Council. Larry Olsen was elected President with Tom Bush, Vice President; Nancy Welch, Secretary; and Tim Tils-worth, Treasurer. Second semester officers were: Larry Olsen, President; Darrell Leu, Vice President; Anita Liebsack, Secretary; and Tim Tilsworth, Treasurer. First semester N'Ergettes were:Sandra Cline, Audrey Coldiron, Elise Kendall, Ruby Pennewell and Nancy Welch. Wava Henry was an Associate. Anita Liebsack was elected an N'Ergette second semester. Minute Men elected for first semester were: Darrell Frenzel, Dick Gall, Don Gordon, Larry Marshall, and Tim Tilsworth. Associates were: George Blakeman, Tom Bush, Darrell Leu, Larry Olsen and Richard Zutz. Glenn Konopasek, Darrell Leu and Gary Northouse were elected as Minute Men second semester, 'and Associates were Arlen Biehle and George Blakeman. Practically every organization in school had a representative from the sophomore class. The sophomores ended an eventful year by serving at die Junior-Senior Prom and participating in the Sophomore Picnic. Jreskman Class Being a freshman is as much fun as it sounds. Despite the jokes and sarcasm thrown at them, the freshmen have completed a very successful year. In the fall of the year, the honor of representing the freshies on the Student Council went to Lynn Gomon and Bill Pflug. The class officers for the first semester were Dwayne Strasheim, President; Tim Schreiner, Vice President; Diana Cook, Secretary; and Virginia Bell, Treasurer. First semester N’Ergettes were Virginia Bell, Lynn Gomon, Shirley Konopasek, Judy Skillstad, and Sharon Sullivan. Diana Cook was an Associate. Minute Men elected for the first semester were Don Brandenburg, Mike Johnson, Bill Pflug, Tim Schreiner, and Dwayne Strasheim. Dick Sydow was an Associate. Sandra Jones and Becky Saltonstall were chosen to be second semester N'Ergettes. Second semester class officers were Dwayne Strasheim, President; Tim Schreiner, Vice President; Diana Cook, Secretary; and Pete Salter, Treasurer. Diana Cook and Mary Ann Fisher served as Associate Cheerleaders. Aside from the numerous outside activities in which members of the class participated, the most perplexing thing for the freshies seemed to be school work. Mr. Bichel and Mr. Smith jammed an astonishingly large amount ot science into most of the fresn-man class, while Miss Gordon took ain't out oi their vocabulary. All in all, the class of '58 had a good year. Band officers for the year were: Gary Frenzel, student director; Audrey Miller, secretary; Carmen Gowler and Julia John, librarians; and Carol Muffly, uniform custodian. During football season the band was always ready with a half-time show. The band members spent many chilly mornings outdoors practicing these shows and were well rewarded with a trip to Hastings for the football game. The band marched up and down the field and played the Star Spangled Banner with the Hastings band. They were treated like kings and queens throughout the trip. Band representatives at the State Music Clinic at Beatrice were Oakley Riggert and Bob Sehestedt. On December 22, marching routines were forgotten and the band presented its Sixth Annual Christmas Concert. Guests were students, faculty, alumni, and parents. The concert was greatly enjoyed by all who heard it. During basketball season a very able pep band was always on hand promoting cheer. Gary Frenzel was the director. In February, the Thirteenth Annual Winter Concert was presented. This concert showed a lot of hard work and talent in the whole band. Although stung throughout the season's play by a rash of broken bones which resulted in the loss of several key players, the team steadily improved as the season progressed and impressed most viewers by its fighting spirit. Norfolk 7 Valentine 7 The 54 grid season was opened by a weird contest against Valentine here. Norfolk threatened to push the visitors all over the field during the first half but could manage only seven points; then had to contend with a tie as the Badgers finished strong against a lack-luster Panther outfit. Reserve Coach Ed Mandl, Assistant Coach Russel Gorman, Head Coach Warren Bud Best, and Fresh man Coach Leonard Soup Campbell. Norfolk 0 Fremont 6 An entirely different Norfolk team traveled down to Fremont the next week only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat. The inspired, determined Panthers led all the way in statistics, but they were forced to concede the victory when a last-second touchdown was nullified by an off-side penalty. Norfolk 19 South Sioux City 0 A South Sioux City record of three unbeaten seasons on their home field fell before the rampaging Panthers as they crushed the Cardinals 19-0 as Tom Best scored the three Norfolk touchdowps. This victory broke a Norfolk ten game losing streak and was a glimpse of things to come. Norfolk 7 Vermillion 0 Back on the home field the Panthers garnered their second win of the season by nudging an undefeated Vermillion outfit 7-0 before a large home crowd. Bill Callies, whose booming punts averaged 49.5 yards, and Billy Kuester, who had done a great job of offensive quarterbacking all season, were standouts for the Panthers. Norfolk 0 Grand Island 39 When a team with an off night meets a team who is up” for the game, the results are appalling to see. Such was the case when Norfolk faced Grand Island at Memorial Field. The sluggish Norfolk outfit never seemed to get out of low gear, as the powerful Islanders pushed them all over the field. The only bright spot in the Panther attack was Bill Callies's line plunges. However, there was never any doubt of the outcome as G.I. ground out a 39-0 win. Don Brenneman scores against Valentine, as Jim Benson comes in to lead interference. Norfolk 8 Hastings 12 Just the opposite was the case down at Hastings the next week. An inspired bunch of boys played the best game of their lives with the NHS band cheering them on. Hastings, ranked fourth in the state at the time, expected to treat their Homecoming crowd to the thrill of a one-sided victory. Instead they were forced to fight all the way, as a determined pack of Panthers in a great defensive display scored a safety, then sprang VARSITY, back row, left to right: Garland Henry, Tom Bush, Jim Benson, Tim Adams, Roger Rasley, Don Fix, John DeHaes, Don Brennaman, Ronnie Hoppel, Tom Best, Norman Putman. Tommy Best, loose on a 58 yard touchdown run that forged them an 8-6 lead until the Tigers managed the winning touchdown in the dying minutes of the game. Norfolk 31 Columbus 18 Homecoming found Norfolk facing a determined crew of Discoverers from Columbus who were out to salvage a poor season at die expense of the Panthers. It turned out to be a thrilling contest of long runs which Jim Benson and Bill Callles move in to break up a Valentine pass play. gave the overflow crowd at Memorial Field a lot to cheer about. Columbus threatened at all times as they sprang their slippery halfbacks loose on two kick-off returns that went all the way. However the Panthers were equal to the occasion as Don Brennaman, playing the best game of his life, stepped his way 50 yards to one touchdown and turned in many other fine runs before the evening was over. line play by Butch Fix, Duane Corey, Duane Gugat, and John Roberts was outstanding as they led the way to a 31-18 sinking of the Discoverers. Norfolk 0 Yankton 12 The last game of the 54 season found the Panthers up against the top ranked team in South Dakota, the Yankton Bucks, undefeated in 18 straight contests. Sluggish after a two week layoff, the Panthers never could get their offense clicking while their defense held the Bucks to a 12-0 victory. Breaks in the game resulted in both Yankton scores. Discussing strategy at the chalkboard are Don Brennemen, Tom Best, and Wayne Robertson who were elected Honorary Football Cap tains by the Varsity Squad at the close of the 54 football season. Although the Panthers had six returning lettermen, they were faced with the task of learning an entirely new system of play which was taught by their new coach Soup Campbell. The Panthers improved steadily as the season progressed, but they never seemed to realize their potential. The fans never knew quite what to expect as the team might score 20 points in one quarter then manage only four points in the next quarter. Norfolk opened the basketball season by handing Pierce a 37-21 setback. Although slow on defense, the Panthers never were in danger as they easily outplayed a poor Blue Jay outfit. An especially bright spot in an otherwise drab season was the Hastings game. Hastings, ranked consistently as one of the top four teams in the state, was never sure of victory until the last quarter. The Panthers outplayed, outrebounded, and outshot their taller adversaries for three quarters until the badly tiring first five was forced to take a rest. The Tigers then pulled away from an outmanned second squad to win 48-26. George Blakeman's layup with 13 seconds remaining in the game and Tom Best’s jump shot from mid-court which ended the first half proved to be the margin of victory as Norfolk defeated David City 47-46 in a tensely thrilling contest at David City. The lead changed hands 13 times in the second half as both teams went all out before the Panthers clinched the victory. The Class A District Tournament held at Norfolk, February 28 to March 4, saw the Panthers in first-round play fall victim to a strong Valentine outfit that eventually won the tournament. Alert Valentine took advantage of every Panther miscue to take a 52-40 victory while ending Norfolk's basketball season.
