As you of the Class of 1954 leave N.H.S. you enter upon a new phase of life. Whether you go on to college or take your place in the work-a-day world, your life will be different. You, up to now, have lived a rather protective life, a life which has been pretty well planned for you. From now on you, more and more, must plan your own life and assume greater and greater responsibilities. That is part of the process of growing up. 1 once heard a group of young people who had been out of High School one semester visiting together about their plans for the future. One of the group finally said, I don’t want to grow up. I want to go on having fun. The others agreed, at the moment. They didn't, of course, really mean what they said, because growing up is life and it too can be fun. —2—

My hope for you is that you accept the challenge of growing up and that you have fun all your life. The best fun you can have is the kind that comes to the person who has learned how to live, who has developed his mind and his spirit, who has become useful to society because of the things he can do and produce, who is kind to and considerate of those around him. Growing up can be a happy experience. It is a privilege. It has to do with morality, religion and efficiency. We, to a large degree, shape our own futures. My fervent wish for all of you is that you Live happily ever after. Sincerely yours, —5— Allen P. Burkhardt, Superintendent
