■ As you of the Class of 1954 leave N.H.S. you enter upon a new phase of life. Whether you go on to college or take your place in the work-a-day world, your life will be different. You, up to now, have lived a rather protective life, a life which has been pretty well planned for you. From now on you, more and more, must plan your own life and assume greater and greater responsibilities. That is part of the process of growing up. 1 once heard a group of young people who had been out of High School one semester visiting together about their plans for the future. One of the group finally said, I don’t want to grow up. I want to go on having fun. The others agreed, at the moment. They didn't, of course, really mean what they said, because growing up is life and it too can be fun. —2— My hope for you is that you accept the challenge of growing up and that you have fun all your life. The best fun you can have is the kind that comes to the person who has learned how to live, who has developed his mind and his spirit, who has become useful to society because of the things he can do and produce, who is kind to and considerate of those around him. Growing up can be a happy experience. It is a privilege. It has to do with morality, religion and efficiency. We, to a large degree, shape our own futures. My fervent wish for all of you is that you Live happily ever after. Sincerely yours, —5— Allen P. Burkhardt, Superintendent Theodore P. Skillstad Principal Dr. Allen P. As the year progressed the freshmen learned the ways and rules of the school. In the spring the Freshmen-Sophomore picnic was held with the Sophs taking the honors. As sophomores, they took part in various activities: football, basketball, choir, band and cheerleading. Finally they became upper class-men. The hare and hound race started the year's activities with the victory going to the Seniors. The Junior class play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, proved to be a great success. Next on the agenda was the Junior-Senior Prom. Much time and planning was put forth on the Prom, whose theme was Sunken Paradise. The last year began with the Senior hares winning the annual hare and hound race. In the spring they presented the class play, held sneak day and field day. The Juniors gave us a superb prom which will long be remembered. On May 20th the graduates of '54 marched proudly up to receive their diplomas. Whether it be sports, activities, or school work the class of '54 always put everything into it. Roy Christians led the seniors first and second semesters with Don Goos as vice president; Janet Carson, treasurer, and Norma Bossard, secretary. The outstanding girl and the outstanding boy of the 1954 graduating class are Joy and Gary. The band first appeared at the football games, where they put on half-time shows. One night they traveled to Neligh for the Annual Baton Twirling Contest. In late October they went to Band Day at the University of Nebraska. They received many compliments for their fine marching on the streets. The first appearance of the Concert Band under the fine direction of Merton Welch, was at the Annual District III Teachers’ Convention. Next they appeared at the Fifth Annual Christmas Concert. In February they presented their 12th Annual Winter Concert. In the spring they made their final appearance in the All City Band Festival. Each program had various types of pieces of music that appealed to everyone. Ann Hale, Barbara Stone, and John De Haes were the band's representatives to the State Clinic which was held in Fremont. At the pep rallies and basketball games, a Pep Band could always be found on hand to provide spirit and pep with their snappy pieces. With a young team of mostly underclassmen the Panthers managed to win only one in eight games. The 53 squad was hampered by injuries most of the season. At times the Panther team work and play was ragged but on occasion they showed real fight and spirit- scoring on teams out of their class. NORFOLK 19 VALENTINE 6 The Panthers opened the 53” grid season with a win over Valentine on the winners field. Norfolk scored first on an eighty yard sustained drive when Art Dewey plunged through the line for the score. Roger Rasley scampered 24 yards for another T.D. The Panthers line played heads up ball on both offense and defense. NORFOLK 0 —FREMONT 18 The Panthers went down to their first defeat of the season in a rough, bruising battle at Memorial Field. Norfolk threatened to score several times in the first half but could never strike pay dirt. The teams went into the locker rooms at half-time dead locked in a scoreless tie. The Panthers were hit by misfortune in the form of injuries and fumbles during the second half. With the N.H.S. lineup riddled by injuries Fremont scored three times. The Panthers played one of the best games of the season. Don Brenneman eludes would-be tackier for T.D. against South Sioux. —74— Jerald Fix Max Witt Gerald Wichert NORFOLK 6—GRAND ISLAND 40 The Panthers could not cope with the machine-like precision of the Big Champs as the Islanders ground out a 40-6 victory. The lone Norfolk tally came when Jerry Resting scooped up an Islander fumble on the ten and raced 90 yards to pay dirt. This was the first time Grand Island had been scored on this season. The hard running of Art Dewey and the fine defensive play of Gary Blakeman highlighted the game. NORFOLK 13—HASTINGS 33 The Hastings Tigers crashed in on their long runs to mar the home-coming celebration of the Norfolk Panthers. After the Tigers ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, Norfolk came back with a drive to the Tiger seven yard line where Art Dewey powered over for the TD. Hastings carried a 33-6 midway in the third stanza, before Roger Blakeman tallied from the three. The whole Panther crew turned in stellar performances against the more experienced Tiger eleven. Norfolk’s hopes for a Big Ten victory were shattered when Columbus eeked out a 13-6 decision in a hard fought contest. After Columbus had cashed in on a second quarter TD, Gary Blakeman crashed off guard from two yards out to make it a tie game. A blocked Norfolk punt, late in the game, set up the winning touchdown for the Discovers. The game featured the best defensive work by the Panther line of the season Roger Rasley Bill Callies Roger Blakeman Wayne Robertson 75 Art Dewey Duane Corey Gary Blakeman NORFOLK 6—SOUTH SIOUX CITY 28 The Norfolk Panthers could not cope with a hard-running South Sioux team, and went down to defeat. Norfolk drew first blood in the contest when Gary Blakeman passed to Butch Fix, who in turn, lateraled to Don Brenneman, who went the last six yards for the score. The Cardinals came back and tallied three TD’s in the second period and added their final tally in the fourth quarter. NORFOLK 7—VERMILLION 14 The Panthers traveled to South Dakota on October 3 only to drop a heartbreaker to the Vermillion club by virtue of one touchdown. Trailing seven to nothing in the middle of the third quarter, the Panthers tied the score on Gary Blakeman’s TD and Tom Best's extra point. The Vermillion eleven came right back to score again. In the waning minutes of the game the N.H.S. crew scored again only to have it nullified by an off-side penalty. The game ended as Art Dewey fought his way to the opponent’s three yard line. NORFOLK 12—SIOUX CITY LEEDS 14 The Panthers traveled to Sioux City and outplayed a fine Leeds crew, but came out on the short end of the score 14-12. Norfolk’s scores came from a Dewey to Thompson pass, and Dewey’s 39 yard sprint. Fix, Callies, and Robertson sparkled on the defense for the Panthers. Leland Barr Duane Gugat Leon Siecke Tom Thompson —76— Dave Wilson Jerry Kesting John Roberts NORFOLK 0—YANKTON 27 In the season s finale, the Panthers were shut out by a potent Yankton eleven. The Bucks were rated as one of the finest crews in South Dakota. Yonkton, led by Stransky and Gehring, rolled to four touchdowns, and the outcome of the game was never in doubt. Gugat and Robertson were the stalwarts for Norfolk on defense. Six seniors played their last football game for Norfolk Senior High School in the closing encounter. The Panthers started the season with two strikes against them as there were no tall boys on the squad. With only two lettermen back they were a green crew which improved steadily throughout the season, but never quite hit their peak. NORFOLK 42—PIERCE 30 A sharp Norfolk High outfit outclassed a scrappy Pierce five in a fast moving game. Gary Blakeman and Tom Best shared top honors with 11 points apiece. The Norfolk crew hit 50 per cent of their gift tosses and also hit well from the floor. NORFOLK 22—WAYNE 46 A slow starting Panther five lost to the Blue Devils on the winner's court. With Wayne's tight defense the N.H.S. crew was unable to work in toward the basket. The Panthers scored only 12 points the first three quarters. Gary Blakeman led the scoring with 11 points. NORFOLK 18—LINCOLN CENTRAL 73 It was just a case of a good big man being better than a good little man as the Links swamped the N.H.S. crew. The tall club from Lincoln completely dominated the play and controlled the bank boards. Gary Blakeman led the Panthers with 7 points. NORFOLK 29—YANKTON 53 A tall rangy crew from Yankton outclassed the short scrappy crew led by Gary Blakeman who put 9 points through the hoop. Norfolk hit only 11 out of 38 tries from the free throw line. Gary Blakeman Don Goos Delbert Felger —82— Dave Wilson Jim Benson NORFOLK 39—CREIGHTON PREP 53 The Panthers cut loose in the fourth quarter to score the hoop for 20 points; however, this last sensational effort came too late and the smooth working Junior Jays came out on the long end of the score. Don Goos carried off team honors with 15 points. NORFOLK 39—LINCOLN N. E. 52 The Panthers jumped to an early lead but as the game progressed the Rockets forged ahead to win. The score was tied four times in the first half. Don Goos and Max Witt led the scoring with 10 points each. Don Goos pots two points as Jerry Costello and Del Felger get position for a rebound. Jerry Costello Bill Kuester Bill Callies Jerry Kesting Jim Nelson Roger Blakeman NORFOLK 24-—FREMONT 55 Inability to get the ball in close, the Panthers were forced to shoot from the fringes of the Tiger's defense. The boys took long shots, and many of them circled the rim before dropping outside. Del Fel-ger, Norfolk High's tallest player, was the high scorer on the Panther team with a seven point total. NORFOLK 25—HASTINGS 74 A lanky Hastings crew dealt the Panthers one of their worst defeats of the season. The tall Bengals had a smooth first break and with their height dominated the rebounds. Don Goos led the scoring with 7 points. NORFOLK 41—BEATRICE 42 Traveling to Beatrice, the Panthers came within 14 seconds of upsetting the forward Orangemen Club. Behind most of the fourth quarter, the Beatrice club scored 5 points in the last 23 seconds to eke out the victory. Don Goos scored 13 marks to lead the Norfolk five. NORFOLK 29—YORK 73 The Panthers bowed to a hustling York five on the winners court. The cagers jumped to a 18-3 lead in the first quarter while the Panthers stayed cold until the third stanza, when they meshed 14 points. Don Goos led the scoring with 12 points. NORFOLK 39—DAVID CITY 40 The Scouts jumped to an early lead which the Panthers matched midway in the second quarter. After half time, the two clubs really opened up with the lead changing hands eight times. Late in the fourth stage the Scouts went ahead 40-34. The Panthers rallied to make it 40-39, but just couldn't get the winning bucket. NORFOLK 41—GRAND ISLAND 55 Opening the game with some fast, sharp shooting, the Panthers rocked the Islanders for most of the first half. In the waning minutes of the second quarter, the G.I. crew came to life and opened an attack of their own. The N.H.S. crew could not penetrate the Islanders defense in the third quarter. In the final stage the Panthers matched their taller opponents point for point. This was one of Norfolk's best games. NORFOLK 37—COLUMBUS 67 The N.H.S. cagers traveled to Columbus only to lose by virtue of 30 points. The Panthers had a bad night both at the free throw line and from the court. They hit only .35 per cent of their free throws. Don Goos led Norfolk with 10 points. -8+ Varsity Basketball Squad, Back Row, Left to Right: Coach Bud Best, Dave Wilson, Roger Blakeman, Bill Callies, Delbert Felger, Max Witt, Jerry Costello. NORFOLK 30 — VERMILLION 53 It was nip and tuck the first two quarters as Norfolk's smooth attack put them in a 10-9 lead at the end of the first stanza. The Tangers dumped in 19 counters in the fourth period to put the game on ice. Dave Wilson led the Norfolk attack with 9 points. NORFOLK 33 — SOUTH SIOUX 63 The South Sioux cagers jumped to a 25-8 lead in the first period. The Panthers out scored the South Sioux crew in the second period, but the damage was done. Don Goos was high point man with 8 points. NORFOLK 34—OMAHA CATHEDRAL 46 A scrappy five from Omaha Cathedral proved to be too strong for the Panthers as they went down to defeat. Don Goos was the leading scorer in the contest and Gary Blakeman played an outstanding lloor game. This was the Panther's last game of the regular season. NORFOLK 29—GRAND ISLAND 42 Norfolk traveled to Fremont to meet Grand Island in the District Tournament only to bow 42-29. Grand Island grabbed a 9 to 4 first quarter advantage and was never headed. The Panthers staged a fourth period rally, but it fell short. Gary Blakeman closed out his career by hitting 11 points.
