These 183 students were determined to make their class, from the beginning of their freshman year to the end of their senior year, one of the best ever to enter NHS. As freshmen they were second only to the seniors with the number of students on the honor roll. As sophomores, they took part in activities of all sorts: debate, football and basketball, band, choir, choralaires, triple trio, Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y. and cheerleading. Gordon Johnson was selected as Vice President of the Nebraska Association of Student Councils that year, and Craig Swoboda was chosen outstanding debater at a state wide meet at Nebraska Wesleyan University. During their four years of high school the class of ’53 met only two defeats, which took place in their third year. The seniors won the hare and hound race by only a few minutes and they also were victorious field day. That year the juniors presented “The Red Spider” as the junior class play. In March they began work on the prom. The theme was Oriental Fantasy. Neola Clark, Janet Barry, Gordon Johnson and Craig Swoboda represented Norfolk High at Girls’ and Boys’ State. Craig added honors to the class when he was elected Governor of Boys’ State and later Vice President of Boys’ Nation. The senior year started off with a bang when the seniors won the hare and hound race. Janet Barry was crowned Homecoming Queen with JoAnn Lenser and Neola Clark attendants. The last six weeks of school found the seniors swimming in activities. After the prom, which was one unforgettable night, the play “Mr. Barry’s Etchings” was presented. Then there was sneak day, field day, senior day, and finally commencement. Now that the class of ’53 has come to the end of their trail, the seniors of today feel, and hope that others will agree, that they have succeeded in making their class one of the best. 24 JANET BARRY 1953 Milestone Girl Milestone Awards Here they are — the outstanding girl and the outstanding boy of the class of 1953. The selection of Janet Barry and Gordon Johnson is easy to understand because with so many fields of interest and participation in activities, their choice as Milestone Girl and Boy is obviously deserved. Some of Janet’s activities during her four years of high school are: N’Ergette for four years, Tri-Hi-Y President, Student Council for four years, State Student Council officer, and Homecoming Queen. Many people know Gordie as an outstanding athlete, but a look at his high school record will show that he was prominent in many fields. He served on the Student Council for four years, was vice president of the State Student Council, was elected as Minute-Man for eight semesters, served as president of the “N” Club during his senior year, and was crowned Sports King. These Milestone awards are given annually to two seniors chosen by a secret committee of five faculty members and five juniors. Selection is based on leadership, character, scholastic standing, and participation in activities . 25 GORDON JOHNSON 1953 Milestone Boy Jeanette Adams Leland Barr Elaine Anderson Eleanor Berge Karen Anderson Joy Best Janet Arns Gary Blakeman Joyce Ballinger Roger Blakeman Sharon Born Norma Bossard Rosanne Brase Verda Lee Bree Jean Brt Patty Bush Jeanine Cannon Janet Carson Shirley Chapman Roy Christian Warren Christiansen Janet Cross Jo Ann Dahlkoetter Jack Dersham Kay Deuel 26 Geraldine Dinkel Elizabeth Eldridge Elaine Ellenberger Kathryn Emrich Marva Fisher Sandra Francke Roger Frank Carole Geist Don Goos Paul Hagedorn Charlotte Hague Ruth Hanson Shirley Harrison Jeanette Hartwig Sherill Hendrickson Graham Henning Le Moyne Hoffman Marilyn Hoile Barbara Holm Jo Etta Holmes Doris Hoover Marvin Horner Nancy Isaacson Mildred Jansen Darlene Jeffries 27 Darlene Kelley George Kendall Warren Kennedy Jerry Kesting Norma Kment Marlene Koeller Eyllia Krehnke Gordon Krehnke Bernice Krueger Gene Kuhl Veryle Lamm Lorraine Lamoureaux Rita Lang Ver Gene Larson La Vada Liebsack Joyce Lienemann Denny Lockman Carol Marshall Richard McFarland Maxine McGinnis Bette Michaelson Shirley Minor Marjorie Mozer Mary Muller Priscilla Musselman 28 Patsy Negley Jim Nelson Jack Nordtvedt Anne Olson Jim Olson Janet Pakes Cecil Power Gary Raasch Jo Ann Reeves Paul Rimovsky Jean Rix Bill Schaffer John Scheurich Dick Schmidt Patti Schnebel Vernon Schoep Beverly Seeman Donna Sellin Leon Siecke Jerry Siedschlag Judy Siedschlag Don Silhacek Stanley Solfermoser Joyce Timperley Allan Tyler 29 Carolyn Van Auker Shirley Walmsley Paul Walters Gus Weich Janice Weich Gordon Wohlfeil Elaine Zobel NOT PICTURED Janet Anderson Ronald Ferris Melvin Juracek Walter Schimelpfenig Virgil Carsten Leland Goetsch John Kerber Doris Stulcke Kenneth Cook Carl Gokie Nancy Moon Jack Tannehill Raymond Draube Marilyn lliff Ted Robbins First semester junior class officers included: Don Goos, vice-president, Roger Blakeman, president, Norma Bossard, secretary, and Janet Carson, treasurer. The class of ’54 started rolling with the class elections. Chosen to lead the Juniors were: President, Roger Blakeman; Vice President, Don Goos; Secretary, Norma Bossard; Treasurer, Janet Carson. Those chosen to represent the Junior Class on the Student Council were: Gary Blakeman, Anne Olson, Jack Tannehill, and Pat Bush. The first event for the Junior Class was the Homecoming dance they sponsored. They put a lot of work into it and made it a big success. The next major event of the season was the traditional “Hare and Hound Race.” It almost has become a tradition also, that the “Hares” always win, and the tradition wasn’t broken this year. When time was called and the Juniors had not seen a trace of the “Hares,” they finally gave up and trudged back to the high school for much needed refreshments. Soon tryouts were called for the Junior Class Play, “Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” which was given on January 17. All the fuss and fury of practices and getting costumes and properties was worth it, as it was presented to a full house. The Juniors chose the original school seal for class ring design and soon orders were coming in to every jewelry store. Second semester came forth with Don Goos ushered in as president; Roy Christian as vice president; Norma Bossard as secretary, and Janet Carson as treasurer. 31 Spring brings in two very important events for the Juniors: The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and Field Day. All the girls in their frilly formals and the boys dressed up in suits really make a picture and memory never to be forgotten. Field day points the real superiority between the two upper classes. The sponsors who helped us so much this year were Mr. Hamm, Mr. Danskin, Miss Gordon, Miss Miller, Miss Vahle, and Mr. Nelson. Whether it be sports, activities, or school work the class of ‘54 always put everything into it. Rapt Attention? The Norfolk Panthers wound up the 1952 season with an unimpressive record of two wins and seven losses. It was, however, a ball club that never knew what the word quit meant. The fellows showed a lot of fire and hustle all the time in every game. While the season was not outstanding, the boys will never forget the wonderful moments they have spent together on the gridiron. NORFOLK 19, VALENTINE 0 Norfolk opened their grid season on the right foot by taking a 19-0 contest from the Valentine eleven on the Cherry County boys’ gridiron. The Panthers played one of their better defensive games, but the offense never really found itself. Midway in the second period, the Maroon and White plowed their way to their first touchdown. With Don Benson packing the mail to the 4, and Tommy Thompson rambling around the right end Norfolk took a 6-0 lead. Bob Kentfield plunged for the extra point, giving the visitors a 7-0 halftime lead. Gary Blakeman pirated a Valentine pass early in the third period, and ran 22 yards for the second marker. Bob Kentfield set up the final touchdown by lugging the pigskin from the Norfolk 52 Hastings picks up five as Babcock, Costello, and Best close in for the tackle. Hastings beat the Panthers 29 to 6. twenty to the Valentine ten. Don Brenne-man then scrambled around end for the final score of the game. FREMONT 35, NORFOLK 14 The Norfolk Panthers could not cope with a hard-running Fremont team in their second game of the season, and went down to defeat. The Tigers were led by Hansen and Snyder, who made two touchdowns apiece. In the second period, Gary Adams grabbed a fumble, and scampered 50 yards for the Panthers’ first TD. Thompson added the extra point. Gordon Johnson made the second Norfolk touchdown in the second half, when he caught a pass from Craig Swoboda. Bob Kentfield plunged for the final extra point. SOUTH SIOUX CITY 32, NORFOLK 12 The Panthers traveled to South Sioux City on September 26th only to lose to the Cardinals by a 32 to 12 score. An off-tackle smash by Don Benson was good for 35 yards, and Norfolk’s first touchdown. The home team held the 12-6 lead for the first half. With Evans, Engel, and Fredrickson running wild the second half, the Cardinals iced the contest in the third period. Benson, scampered 50 yards for the final Panther score. NORFOLK 26, SCHUYLER 6 The Panthers opened the home season by trouncing the Schuyler Warriors 26-6 at Memorial Stadium before a large crowd. Schuyler, surprisingly enough got the first score when Arps scampered for 23 yards. The angry Panthers came back on a score by Don Benson and an extra point plunge by Don Brenneman to give Norfolk a 7-6 lead. The Maroon and White then scored their second TD in less than two minutes, when Gordon Johnson caught a 15-yard pass from Benson in the end zone. GRAND ISLAND 33, Norfolk 6 Grand Island scored in every quarter to mar the homecoming celebration of the Panthers, as they romped to a 33-7 Big Ten victory. With 90 seconds left in the contest, Brenneman raced 95 yards on a spectacular run to save Norfolk from being shut out. Grand Island got their first touchdown with only three minutes gone in the first period. From there on, the outcome was never in doubt. Gettman and Osterberg played sparkling defensive ball for the home team. Bren-neman’s 95-yard sprint stood up all season to become the longest run from scrimmage for a Class A ball club in Nebraska. HASTINGS 29, NORFOLK 6 The Panthers invaded Hastings for a Big Ten clash, and gave the Tigers a tough game in the first half. Even though the Panthers trailed the Hastings crew 13-6 at halftime, they completely outplayed the home eleven. The loss of Gary Blakeman, first string quarterback late in the second period, also hampered the Panthers’ hopes in the hapless second half. Bob Kentfield set up the first Panther score with a 55-yard dash to the Tiger two. Don Bx-enneman plunged for the score to tie up the contest. Hastings took over the show in the last half, and the Pan-thei's went down to their thii’d sti’aight Big Ten loss sui’ely but stubbornly. The final score was 29 to 6. COLUMBUS 40, NORFOLK 6 The Panthers’ hopes of a Big Ten victoi’y this season were blasted, when a detei’mined Columbus eleven drubbed the Panthei’s 40-6 in a game played at Memorial Stadium. The Discoverers had wrapped up the game in the first half with a 26-0 advantage. The only bright spot for the Pnthers came midway in the final period when Craig Swoboda pitched a touchdown pass to Gordon Johnson. Farner, Gettman, and G. Johnson sparkled on the defense for the Panthers. LEEDS SIOUX CITY 22, NORFOLK 6 Bud Rasmussen led the Leeds Lancers to a 22-6 victory before a crowd honoring the players’ dads by scoring three touchdowns. The Panthers turned in their best game of the season defensively, but l’an out of gas when Norfolk needed points in the second half.
