It is the beginning of a new life in which we will use every day the knowledge we gained from our teachers. A few years ago we didn't pay much attention to this fact, but today it be- comes an important reality which we must consider. This is why I, speaking for the Class of 1955, wish to thank our teachers for the time and effort they have spent guiding us during our years at high school and preparing us for the future. On behalf of the editors of the Topa Topa, I wish also to express appreciation to all the faculty members for their cooperation with the annual staff. Later on in life, when we look back on our school days, we shall realize even better how important a part our teachers played in our education. CAROL DIEGES Faculty Editor 4- L we P it fs P' T Dear Seniors, Class of 1955: By the time this message appears in print you will all have taken my Sociology class. This means that you know pretty well my philosophy of life, so I am left without much to say in this message. Most of you have spent four or more years at Nordhoff, during which time you have come in contact with a variety of students and faculty members. From these people you have received ideas, which in addition to your own, should give you a reasonable foundation for becoming a respon- sible working member of your community. I urge you, wherever you may be, to live up to your potentialities. Take part in community activities, join serv- ice clubs, and offer your services to youth organizations so that young people will be better for having come in contact with you. Be a positive force in your community -not a passive or negative one. If you do this you will be a real asset to your community, and the Nordhoff Union High School may well be proud of you. Sincerely, RUDOLPH H. DREWES Prim'ipf1l i-:M -, , ,J s-ft X ,-9 , If KN ni I gf! gfdlaccf-C'2-f MR. -I HN TAYLOR, our friendly and he ful Vice Principal, also teaches Civics to the seniors and is senior class advisor with Mr. Drewes. Some of Nordhoff's finest teachers have been with the faculty the longest. They know all the tricks and have con- tinued through the years to impart to us their knowledge and experiences. We sa- lute these teachers as an asset to our school. J MR. FRANK ROLLER At Norclhoff 21 years University of California Social Science MRS. 'Me Que aj ' 6ftq- 76016 As we come to the end of our final year at Nordhoff, we pause to look back at our four years as High School students. Each has been a glorious, fun packed year, sharing the companionship of fellow classmates. Ou' Freshman year showed typical Freshman enthusiasm supervised by Frank Roller and led by Robert Holton as President, the class showed great interest in studies and other activities. Barbara Decker was Vice President, Roy Archibald, Secretary, and Babe Ruiz as Representative. Work, work seemed to be all we did in our Sophomore year. Mr. Donadio led us in a great year. With the starting of a class paper Sophomore Surge and many speeches by members of the class, the Sophomores were beginning to be known. Two outstanding activities of the year were the Donadio Special Spaghetti Dinner and the famous Sopho- more Spring Formal reigned over by Queen Barleaia Decker and King Glenn Zogg. Class officers were George Skelton, President, Barbara Decker, Vice President, Bob Quimby, Secretary and Chris Fennel as Representative. The junior journal Class paper for the juniors in our next to the last year+Mr. Thompson led us as class advisor in study, parties and even chasing bugs. Barbecues, dances were the main activity as juniors, but the feeling of nearing the end came with the junior ring and traditional junior-Senior Barbecue. The class was led by President, Ron Johnsong Vice President, Bob Quimby, Secretary, Carol Geren and Representative, Chris Fennel. Seniors at last, how many times were those words muttered around the school. As Seniors we have been led by jerry Fullerton as President, Bob Clausen as Vice Presidentg JoAnn Horton as Secretary and Rena Chrisman as Representative. Fog Island with Ron johnson and Carol Geren leading a great cast, was the first of the Seniors' Activi- ties. After the Commencement Formal in june, a great rush of activities for the Seniors including Ditch Day, included Mr. Drewes and Mr. Taylor, two great advisors. Now we leave Nordhoff to look out into the world to our future, with many thanks for the help and friendship we have found here. ff 1 Rox' DUANIE ARCHIBALD Scholarsliip Society 1, 2. 3, 4 Seiilbearer 4 Boys' State Representative 3 Science Cliib l, 2 Dmmatics 1 Proiectionist 1, 2 FBLA 2 NANCX' .El.AlNli BOSW'OR'I'H Fnteretl 3 Cheerleader 4 Dminiitics 3, 4 Art Club 4 Dante Committee 3, 4 JUDY ANN BAIZR GAA l, 2, 3, 4 Dance Committee 2, 3, 4 Art Club 4 FHA 5 ROCK WARRIQN Axiz Entered 4 CAROL CHARLFNIZ CHRISMAN Commissioner of Rallies 4 Letterwoman 3, 4 GAA 1, 2, 3, 4 Art Club 4 FHA 3 Dance Committee 2, 3 Dfxvnu Gl.IiNN ATKINSON Football 1 .. , fl X' .Il l A l 'x '- . ix I K xi , kj' PAH. Under the able coaching of Mr. Mataisz, Mr. Gartrell, and Mr, Hardison, the Rangers had a 3-2-I record in league play and wound up in fourth place. The opening game of the season was one of the most action-packed in Nordhoffs football history. Santa Barbara Catholic got off to a fast start and ran up an early lead of I2-0. But just as fast the Rangers bounced back, and by half time the score was Nord- hoff 18, Santa Barbara 12. The Rangers really got going in the second half and went on to defeat the Cardinals 42-33. The next game was just the opposite as Nordhoff and Moorpark battled it out till the end for a 6-6 tie, which put them in a tie for second place. Each team scored one touchdown, just missed another, and had its important extra point blocked, which could have meant victory for either team. The next week however the Rangers met a determined team from Carpinteria and went down to defeat 12-6. Carpinteria continued its winning ways and went on to win its ninth straight Tri-Valley league crown. The next week the Rangers got back at life in general with a 25-2 trounc- ing over Santa Clara. After the defeat by Saint Monicas, 26-0, the Rangers came back the following week to whitewash Simi to the tune of a 45-7 massacre. The final game of the season was a tough one to lose, as all Villanova games are fwhen we lose themj. The Wildcats got back the bucket which we had won the year before by whipping us 18-0. At the close of the season the team got together and selected jerry Fullerton and Bob Clausen as their captains with jerry Fullerton also getting the vote for most-valuable player. On December 4, the team journeyed to L.A. to watch a pro football game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Baltimore Colts. They got revenge in the next game however, as a large crowd turned out for a home game to see the Rangers down Santa Clara 19-13. Los Prietos was the Rangers' next victim as Hughes Moir scored two touchdowns to lead the j.V.'s to an exciting 13-12 victory. Nordhoff's future stars wound up the season with a 12-0 victory over Villanova which was played in the first rainstorm of the season. Phil Freeman, Ralph McBride Baseball came a long way at Nordhoff this year, as the Rangers showed one of the most spirited teams it has ever had. Coached by Fred Linkenhelt and Herb Smith, newcomers at Nordhoff, the Rangers got off to a flying start by defeating the Ventura j.V.'s in a thriller by a score of 10-7. Although having to take the bitter with the sweet during the rest of the season, the Ranger baseball team showed great promise of things to come in future years, being loaded with freshman, sophomore, and junior talent, and having only two graduating seniors on this year's squad, Ralph McBride and Phil Freeman. All in all, one might say that Nordhoff had a successful baseball season. . W . Front row: Preston Homer. B. Bowie. C. Stark. G. Willianisimn. lf. Christianson. D. Marshal. J. Harding. Boasting one of the largest squads in years, the j.V.'s this season showed great promise of becoming one of Nordhoff's better baseball teams in a few years. Coached by Herb Smith, the Ranger j.V.'s showed a lot of spirit and willingness to play, one quality which characterizes all Norclhoff junior varsity teams. Nordhoff fans should hear a lot from these boys in years to come. Front row: A. jacobs, B. Phillips, D. Wear. Second row: B. Brock, A. Costillo, B. Turner, B. Ellis, L. Bintz, M. Valley, J. Showing drive and enthusiasm, the Ranger track team this year won their share of honors in the various track meets which they attended and sponsored. Although possibly not having the personnel that Nordhoff track teams have had in past years, the Rangers, nevertheless, made up for it in spirit and determination. The CH team this year boasted one of the best squads in many seasons and showed great promise of becoming a great asset to the varsity in a few years. Coached by George Matiasz, this year's track team will long be remembered by those who participated in the sport. in I 'Y -Y' 1' +P Q L 1 'a I' l 4 1' 3 Y With four returning lettermen the Nordhoff tennis team this season made quite a name for itself around the league. Under the able coaching of Mr. Townley, a newcomer to the coaching ranks at Nordhoff, the Rangers did all right in regular league matches, but had to take a back seat to Thacher's Cowboys at the league tournament held at Thacher on May 16-17. Besides the four returning lettermen, the team was boosted by a large number of first-year competitors, some of which turned out to be a real asset to the team. This year's team boasted one of the largest the Rangers have ever had, and with these plus quite a few prospects coming up from the junior high, tennis should go a long ways at Nordhoff in the next few years towards bringing home a championship trophy for the trophy case. One of Nordhoff's most honored societies is the Letter- women's Club. Led by their ad- visor, Mrs. johnson, the girls this year sold tickets at sporting events, put on a March of Dimes campaign, aided in a clean-up drive, and ushered for many events which took place on the school premises, as well as do- ing many other worthwhile services toward bettering the school. The Senior Class had no trouble getting up a winning combination this year, as six of the seven had had varsity experience. After running over the sophomores on the first day of the tournament, they met with the juniors for the playoff. The junior game turned out for all practical pur- poses thc same as the Sophomore contest as the juniors, good as they were, seemed to be no match for the Seniors. The final score was 49-28. l On the junior team were Dt-Von Wfeeks, Dee Fitzgerald, Leonard Gilham, Bob Alley, Ally Acosta, Phil Sims, Ron Shutk, Don Lowe, Howard Dolan, and Abe Costilloi This team should be a real threat next year. 0 alan l4f4Z6f64 -.liff ,-3.4 nl-AH WMM-, iff' I QMJDL fW' , 001, .
