Russ Hamm on a long run. |i COUGAR GRIDDERS ' ■ REACH FOR CIF CROWN The 1982 Cougar Varsity had the tinest football season in the school ' s history. Under the astute leadership of head coach Gary Campbell, the Cougars ended with a 10-3 record, after having advanced to the C.I.F. semi finals. Led by the record-breaking performance of Riverside County player-of-the-year Randy Ber- ry and a school record-setting defense, Norco provided its fans with a thrilling football season. The diminative Berry shattered virtually all Norco seasonal rushing and scoring records in 1982 by amassing 1776 yards rushing and scoring 22 touchdowns. His illustrious career includes school recor ds in total yards rushing, total touchdowns, and total points. As a result of his efforts. Berry was named to the first team AII-C.I.F., and was only the fifth member selected to the Norco High School football hall of fame. In addition to Berry, the Cougar offense received leadership from seniors Ivlike Kent-QB, Andy Garcia-2nd all league center, Robbie Gravelle-lst team All-League, Matt Rasmussen-T, Warren Brad- ley-G, and All-County wide-receiver, Russ Hamm. The Norco defense, which was ranked first in the Sunbelt League and second in Riverside County, was led by two-time All-League linebacker Richard Lopez, 2nd team All-League defensive lineman David Davis, and 2nd team All-League defensive back Matt Cook. Seniors Joe Morettini-DE, Jeff Coker-LB, Brett Mclntosh-DB, Jim Brown-DB, Ron Merchant-DT, and Bill Turner-DE, were also instrumental in providing the leadership needed to produce a successful team. The future of Norco football also looks bright with the return of 15 Varsity lettermen. The Cougar offense will return junior starters John Weyghandt-LB, Hank Fontes-QB, Mike Wilson-TE, and Jeff Oberdank-End; and sophomore fullback Matt Logan. In addition, juniors Ed Augenfeld and John Compton will be expected to fill in line sports, as will returning sophomore Darren Roth. The Cougar defense will also be highly competitive next year with the return of All-League nose guard Eddie Hernandez, anchor-end Cha-Cho Gonzalez, Jeff Oberdank-DB, Darren Roth-DT, and outside linebackers: sophomores Curt Showalter and David Mundt. In addition to these returning players, sophomore Matt Logan will be following in Lopez ' s footsteps as middle linebacker, while sophomore Shawn Sowder and Jerry Montgomery will join Oberdank in the defensive backfield. The Cougar fortunes look bright for the future. The losses of Berry, Hamm, Lopez, and the other seniors will be felt severely, but with the best crop of sophomores to ever enter the Norco football program, the Cougar fans can look forward to another season of thrills and excitement.
