CLrbb PROPHECY It w s the year of 1968 during the Democratic convention in Chicago, that I Jerry March nt, was dressing to go to the convention There w s some ne r rning or mv door when I answered a t ll, dark curly haired man w s standing there Cf cour e, I recognized this neatly dressed man as Clifton Ellerbeck, who was running AS a can didate for the nomination for President He s11d he had heard I was 4 delegate so had come to nick me un on the w y to Convention Hall Then we met Larrv O'Rourke, who was also a delegate, and st rted for the Hall It seems Larry berlme tired of farming so he oec me a big noll tlciin Before we got very far, we were stonoed ny a jolly Dollceman who s id we had to have a special escort to Convention Hall We were very surnrlsed to find t at our nolicem n friend wis an old class mate Gary Flngfl en he said he en1oved his work verv much since it helned keen law and order As we arrived at Convention Hall, the chllrmnn was c lling the meeting to order He was a short, he vy built dlrk m n deing a nolitici n must have agreed with Junior Stickney is he had out on much weight and had that l zy look aoout him lfter Junior had c ll ed the convention to order, the secret rv read the minutes e recognized the secretary as Sherry Swlnson It seems like she had gotten tired of housework so she w s out on a new adventure I thought I had seen enough surorislrg things for one day, out that was only the oepinning bec use when it came time for the welcome, I could hxrdlv believe my eyes Junior introduced the mayor of Chicago who was to give the welcome, Lowell Seiberling had cextainlr ch nged for he had grown a mustiche ind h d let his hair grow ouite long After leaving N S H S Lowell had been a businessman in Chicago bec me so nopular that the people elected him as mayor Then the nomln ting speeches beg n with 1 very determined sneech g1ven by Shirley Miller, for Chmrles Carle, who wa running against Charles had become a orominent citizen of the l rge cltv of Hanford, Iowa Charles became very nonullr in nolitics when he DS1D6d Hanford become such a large important city The next nomination sneech wvs given by sob Jheeler for Clifton Ellerbeck Bob hadn't changed much from the time we kne him nut while talking to him later, we found he had a very sweet wife nd two children Loren Steidl was a Senator and very Dopular He was running for vice uresident along with Clifton after graduating Loren beclme famous baseball Dlayer for a few years Buring this time he became verv interested in nolitlcs nd became senator The governor of Iowa gave the nomln t'on sne ch for Senator bteidl Iowa's governor was a short, light c mnle t d man he hid a must che and dark rimmed glasses I then recognized dim as Carl Lucas Carl had done some work in architecture after l xving N S H S 1rd then de clded to try oolitics Carl had alwavs trought it would be a real easy and nleasant life to have a nice soft chair to sit in nd have ot of secret ries working for him I wonder if he still thinks a governor's work is all Dleasure' Soon Junior adjourned the meetlng and aS Larry and I were le ving we heard someone call to us As we turned, we saw Duane and Huth Sellon Duane said he was on a business trip to Chicago this week so he decided to bring Huth to the bonvention that day It seems that this is the first trip Ruth nd Duane have been able to take together as they have a family of three husky boys at home which rewlly keens them busy Just t en Ester Shanks svoke to us She was a delegate frwm California Ester's sist r had flnallv convinced Ester that California was a wonderful state to live in So several years after graduating she had gone t ere She said that she is really en1oy1ng it there I suggested that we all get together and go to Iaura's Tea Room which was a famo s olace in Chic go after te ching several years in smxll towns, Laura DeGraw decided she would trv life in a larger city for a while As we entered Iaura's Tel Room the head walter cvme over and gre ted us in French KI still haven't figured out what he saidl, wls a tall, slim, rather dark n n of course, he recognized some of us Fight aww But none of us realized tdis h ndsome mm was Dob willshe After renewing old acouaintances Bob s id he had tamen un rrench in I, 5 A ,, J Y 1 , . r ' N ' , r 1 X I . gg A G , : .
