The captains were Todd Scar- nati and Matt Doyle. Kathy Kyle was the teams manager. The J.V.’s record stood at 4-9. That was an incredible season keeping in mind that 6 sophomores played Varsity instead of J.V. this year. The J.V. captains were Matt Cheatham and Bob Barbour. And the J.V. MVP was Peter Jones. The team was very young but their determination to better themselves has made them a very competi- tive team. The boy's team went 11-5, and sent two runners-Berkshire League All-Stars Jeff Linden and Brian Motes-to the State Open. The girl’s team had a poorer dual-meet record: 3-6. But we finished fourth in the Berkshire League . Se- niors were vital to the success and spirit of both teams. Four-year runner Ali Thomas led the girl’s squad, and Jeff Linden was one of our two strongest runners all fall. Chris Kin- kade, our number-one runner in 1984, ran injured all of 1985 but still figured prominent- ly in a number of victories. Bob Paterson ran in our top five every time he took the line- ;Doug Matey would have except for injuries. The team played well but just couldn’t register many wins. Coach Lawless said, “It was a pleasure to work with my seniors Marnee Whan, Sue Andrews, Jeanne Clyde, Krista Matsen, and Liz Megura. Outstanding play- ers included: Jill Cooney, First team B.L., Angela Clyde, Aimee Brokenshire, and Jodi Haeusgen, all second team B.L., Moira Burns and Rhonda Sperry, Honorable Men- tion. Coach Greg Hunt felt that the team should have fared far better than they did. considering all the talent shown in their quick team. Among these praise- worthy senior players was captain Vin Avitabile, dominating the boards in almost all of the games. Senior Matt Mletzko scored over 1000 points, also breaking a school record with 43 points in that game. Floor leader Todd Scarnati led his team to victories with many assists, and Matt Doyle, only able to play the second half of the season helped his team with tenacious defense. Also contributing to the Varsity team were junior Erik Lindstrom, sophomores Matt Spencer, Wayne Wescott, Brian Motes and freshman Kevin Denny. Captain Vin Avitabile jumps for the rebound. Coach Paniati Coach Paniati GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls basketball team may not have had a great record, but they had a great season. Suc- cess is the achievement of one’s total capabilities and this team was successful in that regard. There were only two seniors on the varsity squad so the team was among the youngest in the league. By hard work and determination the team improved as the season advanced, and finished with six victories. Although the senior co-captains, Diana Bonaccorsi and Norlyn Festa, would have liked to gain the two more victories that would have put them in the state tournament, they remained en- thusiastic throughout. As coach, I am sure Diane and Norlyn will be sorely missed by everyone. Right: Diana Bonaccorsi goes up for the shot. Coach Tom Morgan Front row: Jen Ferguson. Pam Megura. Diana Bonaccorsi. Despite their many difficulties with injuries, the girls made their season a very suc- cessful one, being victorious in a large number of meets. Having four captains on a team is not a familiar occurence, but Coach Rich Archambault seemed to feel that all of these girls were well deserving of the title. Senior Kathleen Borger had an extremely successful season, breaking the school record on the beam, and also qualifying for bars, beam, and all-around for states. Juniors Jody Haeusgen and Marie Perrucci both qualified for states with high scores on the bars. The fourth captain, Kris Ed- wards, also contributed significantly to the team with her performance on the bars and beam. Not to be forgotten is sophomore Valerie Barra, who qualified for states in the beam event. Other mem- bers helping the team were junior Jody Cooper, sophomore Colette Velky, Keri Beckly, Stacy Al- bizu and freshman Andy Walnes and Tanya Koles- nik. WRESTLING The N.H.S. matmen ended the season with a 7-12 win loss record. With only 2 varsity starters re- turning for last season, it was definitely a rebuild- ing year. Led by co-captain seniors Jeff Jimmo and Mac Paoli, the chiefs finished third in the Pomperaug Christmas Tournament and a very re- spectable ninth place finish in the class “S” State Tournament. State Medalists included Jeff Jimmo 185, fourth place, Bob Barbour UNL fourth place and John Veech 105, third place. John went on to represent NHS at the state open. Other senior lettermen: Mike Gelada 126, Andy Chapman 132, Gordon Ferris 132, Rick Kern 138, Eric Dietz 155, and Jim Julian UNL. We dedicate this page to Mr. Edgar Buck who will be leaving NHS with us this year. Mr. Buck began teaching in 1956 at what was then Woodbury H.S.. He was the first and proved to be the only chairman of the Social Studies department. Throughout his 31 years of teaching, Mr. Buck gave his time unselfishly to his students. He always aimed to please and was looked up to by everyone. This intelligent, bright, caring human being has certainly made a lasting and favorable impression on the faculty and the students here at Nonnewaug. His leaving affects all of us and we will feel a great loss when he goes. GOOD LUCK FROM ALL OF US! 136 An open letter: My four years as advisor of the class of '87 have gone by so quickly, it does not seem so very long ago that I stood with your parents and friends and watched as you were graduated from Middle School. You were children then, nervous and giggling. Children you are no longer. I have had the special privilege and joy of being involved in the process that has turned you into young men and women. It has always been interesting. I think what has most impressed me is your amazing energy and enthusiasm. Whether setting up for a dance, rehearsing for A Christ- mas Carol, or dragging me down an inner tube ride at Action Park, you attacked any activity with contagious zeal. Your caring has also made a deep impression on me. Many of you have been together since Kindergarten, and your loyalty to eachother is outstanding. You have angered me at times, frustrated me on occasion. But more than anything else you have made me proud of your accomplishments and achievements. Now, working with “Bye Bye Birdie , I am struck by how talented and gifted you are. Rehearsals can be exhausting, but I usually leave the auditorium exhilarated by your performance. It has been said that teaching will either make you old or keep you young. The class of '87 has allowed me to feel the joy and excitement of youth, and for that I thank you. You take with you my affection and hopes for your happiness. I know you will do well. MaryAnn Martins CHIEFLY ANIMALS Heather Kopchik’s rabbit “Dinky”. Cindy DeLavergne cuddles with a pup from Vo-Ag.
