NONNEWAUG HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATION We, the class of 1982, would like to dedicate this yearbook to two enthusiastic individuals. With their tireless efforts they helped us through four very impor- tant years of our lives. Instructing us in the various studies of algebra, geome- try, trigonometry, and calculus and doubling as our class advisors. Chip Planz and Tim Cleary have given us a part of themselves that we will always remember. From the beginning of our freshman year, they involved themselves in our activities with excitement and vigor. Their presence was reassuring ivhen we were faced with difficulties: They screamed along with us at pep rallies, sang along with us while Christmas carolling, and helped decorate for dances. The time and energy that they contributed was immeasurable. At any rehearsal during the plays, Mr. Planz could be found painting and hammering the sets 2 with a group of students; meanwhile, Mr. Cleary would be walking around with his clipboard giving directions to actors. Only with their help could the plays have been as successful as they were. Words are not enough to express the thanks that is due to our advisors. They have spent an infinite amount of time contributing to the success of our activities. Their encouragement and support never ceased. Mr. Planz and Mr. Cleary are special because they were not advisors who only commented and directed, they became part of the class. Because of this close tie their excitement, energy, and spirit spread throughout the class. Instead of leaving as only teachers and students, we will part as friends. 3 4 5 The school provides us with a stage on which we can act out our many roles. The classroom and athletic field are a few of the places where we can experiment with these roles and ex- press our individuality. Every event, activity or class that we participate in provides op- portunities for us to enrich our personalities. 7 In our high school career we are called upon to utilize our many talents. Our roles include those of Student, Athlete, Leader, and Artist. The stage directions and lines vary with each role. Each per- son is composed of many characters which, when combined, make us each a special individual. g 10 Our entrance into this play began with our freshman year. At first we were unsure and tentative about our performance. After a few weeks, however, we gained confidence and the stage directions became famil- iar. Although the scenery and lighting changed with each year, we still retained our spirit and dedication. Four years of learning, teaching, and experimenting have made us confident and ive exit the play with a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. 11 Although zee played many parts during the years in high school, our future will call upon us to play many more. Our past performances will aid us in our new roles. We will remember the teachers, coaches, and advisors who assisted us in interpreting, changing, and perfecting our roles. Because of their support and encouragement, our final performance is polished. 13 14 MARY EYRE — Secretary An administration is an integral part of any school system and Nonnewaug's is no exception. In fact, our administration helps to produce the type of graduates who contribute to society in many ways. Without these advisor's constant support, this school could not function in the orderly manner to which it is accustomed. For this, we the Class of 1982, would like to thank the Administration of Nonnewaug High School. LEON A. Although the record for the season was 0-12-2, spirit and enthusiasm were evident throughout the entire season. Tri-captains ]oe Perrucci, Matt Post, and David Lewis and Seniors David Cole, Kevin Daley, Geoff Gallop, Or- lando Garner, Ed Keplinger, and Mark Landry were able to maintain the high spirits of the underclassmen who will have a few more years to develop their soccer skills. The Junior Varsity left the season with a 4-7-3 record. The young inexperienced and spirited team main- tained a never-quit attitude. Junior Varsity coach Robert Rutkowski and Varsity coach Robert O'Sullivan are hopeful about the future seasons. Even though the seasons were frustrating, the team gave their best effort and they left the season with a feeling of deter- mination to improve in the coming years. Third row: ]oan Bulmer (Coach), Dawn Roberts, Sue Van Winkle, Lynette Hardisty, Mimi Meyers, Margaret Clarkson, Kris Jones, Mellissa Clark. This year, as in the past, the field hockey team concentrated on working as a team. Along with the support of the coach, Joan Bulmer-Sakowski, who was always conducive to our effort, the team worked hard, had fun, and became a very close-knit group. The team’s re- cord, 4-9-2, does not indicate the hard- work and dedication that made the team unique. Barbara Cappelletti, our Italian ex- change student, became an important part of our team through her enthusi- asm and spirit. The tri-captains Susan Odendahl, Debbie Crane, and Wendy Buchert along with other seniors Liz Russell, Kris Jones, Heather Levell, and Melissa Clark helped to increase the team's unity with their leadership and spirit. The team will always remember B-checks, the new route, flooded locker rooms, the bugs, 1-2-3-uh, Hit it drills, and Bulm's electric blanket. The year's productivity can best be shown through the friendships that will long surpass the end of the season. JUNIOR VARSITY First row: Barbara Capplletti, Sue Landry, (co-Captains). Second row: Marie Hendricks, Kelly Jones, Nicole Crane, Beth Shaeffer, Kristin Duarte, Tanya Kiyak, Jenny Miller. Third row: Holly Talerico (Coach), Caroline Keating, Cretchen St. John, Lynette Hardisty, Nooran Mahooti, Piper Fenimore, Leigh Terell. 81 82 83 VOLLEYBALL This fall marked the fourth volleyball team at Nonnewaug High School. Sen- iors Cathy Adams, Co-captain Dawn D'Aversa, Tracey McDougall, Kelli Reynolds, Jennifer Colburn, Robin D'Ambrose, and Sharon D'Ambrose and along with co-captain Simone Sav- age and other underclassmen built an impressive record of 14-2. The new coach, Janice Cohen, encouraged the team throughout the season with her spirit and enthusiasm. At the home tournament game this year a supportive crowd showed up to cheer the team. Unfortunately, Nonnewaug lost 3-1. Though the de- feat was upsetting, the team played skillfully and to the best of their abili- ties. The team will never forget the Po- lish pro Waldren, sparking and checks. The Junior Varsity enjoyed a win- ning season with a record of 8-3. Senior Co-captain Kathy Duff led the team to their victories with the help of the new Junior Varsity coach, Dan Vaugn. Both teams built the most impressive records since the beginning of Volley- ball at Nonnewaug and they will look forward to many more exciting seasons. VARSITY First row: Jennifer Cato, Dawn D’Aversa (captain), Simone Savage (captain), Robin D'Ambrose. Second row: Cathy Adams, Kelli Reynolds, Betsy James, Debbie Sperry, Paul Kern. Under the leader- ship of captain Jesse Meadows, the team won 3 meets and finished very close in 3 others. This was a noticeable improvement over the previous year. The high point of the season was Nonnewaug’s surprising 3rd place showing in the Berkshire League Championships. For their performance in the championships, Jesse Mead- ows and Ken Sperry received All-star recogni- tion. The duo also qualified for the state section- als. Seniors Mark Briggs, Ken Wescott, and Russ Kurtz were valuable runners whose en- thusiasm will be missed. The team would like to thank coaches Larry Chiucarello and Paul Hadzima for their dedica- tion and guidance during the season. Intervals, surging, and encouragement from the coaches made them team favorites. First row: Pat Cruse, Ken Wescott, Jesse Meadows, Russ Kurt, Mark Briggs, Ken Sperry. Second row: Robert Boucher (manager), ]oe Meadows, Steve Rupe, Roy Therrian, Matt Odendahl. Third row: Paul Hadzima (coach), Chris Cannon, Chris Siderer, Matt Gagnon, Larry Chiucarello (coach). HARVEY 90 91 92 93 BOYS BASKETBALL In the past few years the chiefs re- lentless efforts resulted in hard fought but frustrating seasons. Through their enthusiasm and persistence, the chiefs climbed to the top of the Berkshire League this year. With their height, shooting ability, and rebounding talent, the Chiefs became a major competitor for the top spot in the Berkshire League. Led by senior captain Dave Cole, the Chiefs never lost their winning attitude or their desire for success. Other sen- iors Mike Calo and David Lewis added to the team spirit by their determina- tion and enthusiasm. Coach Pete Cooney and Assistant Coach Bob MacSweeney should be commended for leading the Chiefs to a winning record. There were many exciting games throughout the season. One of the most fulfilling victories for the Chiefs was their win over Pomperaug, a long- standing rival. Another highlight of the season was the game against Thomas- ton. Although Nonnewaug did not tri- umph over Thomaston, the Chiefs re- tained a lead for the majority of the game. Nonnewaug spectators have al- ways been supportive but their enthu- siasm took on new dimensions during the Thomaston game when small bears could be seen lynched throughout the gymnasium. The team was very young, and it is antici- pated that in the near future will do exceptionally well. Senior co-captain Jen Colburn dis- played leadership and enthusiasm throughout the season. Although senior co-captain Wendy Buchert urns injured early in the season, she contributed en- thusiasm to the team. Under the direc- tion of Coach Sally Esposito, the team played many fine basketball games. VARSITY First Row: Susan Van Winkle, Wendy Buchert (Captain), Jennifer Colburn (Captain). We always, however, had enough spirit and energy to attend the numerous dances held during our freshman year. 122 Probably the highlight of our freshman year was the trip to Cape Cod! Who can forget our eager excitement when we arrived, our comical efforts trying to pitch our tents and our relief and exhaustion when they were finally up. The next morning we were awakened by the abra- sive sound of clanging pots and pans. One windy afternoon was spent aboard a boat searching for whales while getting seasick and sunburned. Another enjoyable activity was hik- ing through a bug-infested swamp. But one of the best afternoons was the one spent jumping in the sand dunes even though we spent the rest of the day itching from the sand in our pants. 123 No one will forget the fun-filled trips to Sherwood Island where ive pigged-out, burned in the sun and played wild games of volleyball and softball. The last field trip for our class was the trip to Walden Pond and Boston, where everyone espe- cially enjoyed going to Quincy Market. 124 Act: 3 125 BASEBALL This year's baseball team exhibited both dedication and enthusiasm, which was illustrated in their record. Sen- iors Joe Perrucci, Jim Fritz, Warren Seabury, Dave Lew- is, Geoff Gallop, and Glenn Foster led the team through an outstanding season. The team is enthusiastic and is expected to do well this season. Seniors Susan Odendahl and Laura Weed exhibit both spirit and dedication. Many memories fill the players minds from the past sea- sons such as Don Ho and bringing number 8 off the bench to pitch. 128 First row: Anne Mahan, Laura Weed, Sue Odendahl, Sandy Jannetty, Dawn Second row: Marianne Platt, Ranada Bowman, Kathy Warner, Laura Cyr, Virginia Zombare. The girls look forward to a strong team next year. The Varsity Boys Tennis Team was led this year by seniors Andy Robertson and Matt Post.
