Text from Pages 1 - 166 of the 1980 volume:

Our class entered the doors of Nonnewaug four years ago; now we are leaving. What have we gained? Friendship, wisdom, self-esteem, and perhaps most im- portantly, the courage to be ourselves and to stand up for our principles. Our many memories will remain with us always and will be the best of our lives. We have given Nonnewaug four years of work and enthusiasm, and it has given us our future. We have been touched so many times, In little ways by so many people. We have found something valuable. Something we did not expect to find. It just happened .... We found ourselves. 2 Mrs. Arpaia, we the class of nineteen hundred and eighty dedicate this, our yearbook, to you. We thank you for being our advisor and our friend. We've had so many experiences together and we'll always remember the times we've shared. We've been frustrated and exultant, and as ad- visor you have counseled us and con- soled us and shared in our successes. We hope you have learned as much from us as we have learned from you. 3 SERENDIPITY The gift of finding valuables or riches not sought. SRI LANKA Arab mariners knew this teardrop off India as Serendip; an 18th-century English author equated it to “unexpected delights’ and coined the word “serendipity”. In Hindu epic it was Sri Lanka — Resplendent Land. Serendipity is something special. Serendipity is getting to know someone you never knew before. Serendipity is the first blossoms of Spring. BOARD OF EDUCATION 8 FIRST ROW. Marlon Martinelli, Ruth Russell—Chairman, George Bradlau—Superintendent, Jane DeVries, Rev. Robert Wright, Jr. SECOND ROW: Ronald Bienkowski—Business Manager, Robert Savage, Mark Alvarez, Alphonse Avitabile. MISSING: Joan Smith. ADMINISTRATION Mr. Richard Segall—Principal SCIENCE 10 Mr. Gerald Raczelowski Mr. Bob Rutkowski When we think about the science department, we remember a lot of good times. We went to Cape Cod with Mr. Ceist and learned about national parks with Mr. Rutkowski. Mr. Dibble taught us chemistry while we worshipped Avagadro with Mr. Lynch. Mrs. Arpaia dissected frogs while Mr. Raczelowski kept busy with IPS. Although Mrs. Cummings's significant figures were a pain, she helped us all with many of our labs. The people in the science department have helped us throughout high school and have been our friends as well as our teachers. n Mrs. Rosanna Arpaia ENGLISH We all had to take four years of English at Nonnewaug, and although we might forget some vocabulary words and some stories we read, we'll remember our teachers for a long time. Mrs. Brier taught us about public speaking, Mr. Korpalski and Mr. Kennelly about mythology. In 1978, Mrs. Ford came to Nonnewaug and Mrs. Zanger helped out when Mrs. Potter broke her leg. We'll remember discussing Bill's facetious banter with Mr. Yarusavage and the predicament of Hester Prynne with Mrs. Ruocco. And none of us will forget our senior English class with Mrs. Lavelle. Mr. Adam Korpalski 12 Mrs. Julie Lavelle Mr. Ron Yausavage 13 Miss Genne Palman MATH Mr. Tim Cleary 14 Ms. Tara Rickart Every member of the Math Department has been at Nonnewaug throughout our four years here. We have all learned a little math with some help from Mr. Dorsett's encouraging smile and Mr. Cleary's unique sense of humor. Ms. Rickart showed us a cute problem, Mr. Planz got psyched by it, and Mr. Plourde solved it with his pretty colored chalk. The Math Department is one of the school's finest, and it has made the subject bearable for some, fascinating for others. 15 Mr. Vic Plourde Vocational Agriculture The Vocational Agriculture Program is an active and popular department at Nonnewaug High School. The wide variety of courses which are offered in the fields of Agriculture will prepare the students for future agricultural careers. Mr. Breakell, Mr. Burdick, Mr. Hutter, Mr. Wisniewski, Mr. Thomson, and Mr. Yale do a great job of teaching Vo-ag. They all have the talent and ability to teach, not only with books, but also with their hands. We learn to do, and do to learn in Vo-ag. These teachers are helping to instruct future generations in the skills necessary for the future of the world. Their devotion and patience will always be admired by vocational agriculture students. Mr. Julius Yale Mr. Bruno Hutter 16 17 Mr. Linehan's Puritan , History class, Mr. Orgovan's Comparative Religions course, and all of the other courses at Nonnewaug High School, are truly diverse. Mr. Buck taught us about other governments in the world, Mr. Hadzima told us about the first American Indians, and Mr. Orgovan informed us of the economic structure of the U.S. in his P.O.D. course. The History department at Nonnewaug enables its students to learn from past mistakes and to advance in the future. Mr. Mark Linehan 18 Mrs. Veronica Emig 19 Mr. Tom Orgovan FOREIGN LANGUAGES Ms. Susan Spielberg Ms. MaryLou Cofrancesco Monsieur Bignelli est le chef de la departement des langues. Nous nous souvenons notre piece fameuse, La Cantatrice Chauve. Oh decidement! Senorita Cofrancesco es la maesta de Espanol. Ella es muy simpatica, pero ella no gusta Bic Clic . Nuestra clase de Espanol nos recerdas Io aburrido de laboratoric de idiomas, libro de trabajo, Y juegos de bingo. Y Senorita Spielburg, ella Y uno profeffora nueva de Espanol. Deceamos darle la bieneinida a nuestro escuela. Le deceamos Io mejor. Ms. Ingrid Boedecker 20 Mr. Stephen Bignelli BUSINESS The teachers in the Business Department have put in many long hours teaching students typing and other business skills. Under the supervision of Mr. Judd, Mrs. Robertson, and Mrs. Ferrari, many students have chosen to go into business careers. A business-like atmosphere is kept in the classrooms at all times to further each student's awareness of business procedures. A new incentive was initiated this year called the Business Student of the Month Award. This has encouraged students to participate more in the growing field of business. The patience and guidance exercised by these teachers will leave a lasting impression of good business attitude on each student they teach. Mr. Raymond Judd 21 Ms. Patricia Ferrari Mrs. Karen Robertson SPECIAL EDUCATION Ms. Nikki Rhodes The Special Education Department at Nonnewaug has grown through the years. With a combined effort by Mrs. Landry, Mr. Smith, Mr.Chiuccarello, Miss Rhodes, and Mrs. Whan, they have boosted the Special Education Program. The students who participate in this program have achieved a great deal of success at Nonnewaug. With the continued help of the department staff, many other students will have the chance to learn and to grow as individuals. The Special Education program will continue to be an important contribution to Nonnewaug. Mrs. Pat Landry 22 Ms. Sharon McCleery Mr. Larry Chiucarello 23 Ms. Barbara Denver INDUSTRIAL ARTS and HOME EC. In the last two years, the Industrial Arts program has expanded. As well as instructing the students their skills, Mr. Parkhouse and Mr. Brockway have taught them how to be creative. They have also done a fine job in enlightening our hallways with their exhibits. In the Home Economics Program the students have been taught nutritions, cooking and sewing. She has taught the students different skills in sewing and cooking. Miss Tucker came to our school last year and has been a great contribution to the department. Mr. Robert Brockway Mr. Rodger Parkhouse Miss Barbra Tucker 24 PHYS. ED Ms. Joan Bulmer Mr. John Lawless The Physical Education Department has a lot to offer Nonnewaug High School. The teachers include Mr. O'Sullivan, Miss Bulmer, Mr. Stewart, and Mr. Lawless. They show a great interest in not only their jobs, but also support the Sports Program at Nonnewaug. These four teachers are coaches of various athletic teams. Mr. O’Sullivan is Head of our Athletic Department and he is also a dedicated soccer coach. Miss Bulmer has coached the girls softball team and currently coaches field hockey, to which she has devoted a great amount of time. Mr. Stewart has coached Freshman Basketball and boys Varsity Tennis, which had a fine record last season. Mr. Lawless has coached wrestling. He has also started the first volleyball team at Nonnewaug which had a very successful season last fall. These four teachers have all devoted their time and effort to help us grow both mentally and physically. 25 Mr. Bob O'Sullivan Mr. Gary Partridge Mr. George Liebowitz Mrs. Donna Johnson 26 27 Ms. Judith Davis Ms. Mary Bignelli The secretaries in the main office, Mrs. Bignelli and Mrs. Marchand, are two very special people. They are hardworking and are always cheerful. Their job includes the usual secretarial work in addition to being patient listeners. Even when they are busy, they find time to assist the students. Still, the office is kept organized and in smooth running order. We, the Seniors, want to thank two great ladies for all their kindness and efficiency that has helped make our school an enjoyable place to be. 28 Ms. Carol Marchand Mrs. Nancy Clark Mrs. Mary Eyre 29 Dr. Allen Fossbender This year, as in every other, the guidance counselors were flooded with college applications and requests for assistance in filing them. We are truly grateful for having had the aid of Ms. Sally Esposito, Ms. Karen Bovino, and Dr. Allen Fossbender, Director of Counseling Services, this year. This excellent department has seen us through four long years of frustrating problems, and if we can ever fully appreciate the guidance these people have offered, we will realize how fortunate we were. 30 Ms. Sally Esposito 31 THANKS A LOT REACH OUT .. . After the election of Brian O'Leary and Paul Giroux as captains, the team looked promising with a 3-2-1 record in the first 6 games. Despite consistent effort by seniors Jerry Caires, Tim Wildman, Bruce Fox, Brad Dermond, Tim Sprano, Drew Bertola, and Mickey O'Neil, a mass of injuries at a critical point in the season turned the tables, as the team was knocked out of the playoffs and finished at a 4-11-2 mark. Although the record doesn't show it, the team maintained their talent, hustle, and a good amount of spirit—not to mention a victory over the Varsity Field Hockey Team at the end of the season. FIRST ROW: Scott Brownell, Rick Cote, Brad Dermond, Mickey O'Neil, Brian O'Leary—co- captain, Paul Giroux—co-captain, Paul Petruzzi, joey Perrucci, Dave Lewis, Steve Wells. SECOND ROW: Ian Jannetty, Dave Cole, Bruce Fox, Drew Bertola, Tim Sprano, Mike Molzon, Mat Post, Scott Gibson, Kevin Makerwicz, Ken Kurtz, Chris St. John, Coach O'Sullivan. 36 37 FRONT ROW. THIRD ROW: Holly Talarico—Coach, Sue Odendahl, Heather Level, Margaret Cassidy, Wendy Buchert, Hedy Hollanda, Dawn Roberts, Melissa Clark, Lorraine Meyers, Miss Bulmer—Coach. At the end of last year, Miss Bulmer decided she wanted a winning team. So, Bulm and a dozen girls went off to camp. The girls' spirits rose and stayed high throughout the season. The team stuck together through thick and thin (mostly thick) with the help of co-captains Marybeth Pietrorazio and Teresa Perrucci and seniors Hedy Hollanda, Robin Boughton, Mary Pacilio, Lorraine Meyers, and Donna Clisby. Even though it wasn't the best of seasons, the girls still had a lot of fun and they'll always remember: Bloomers; George; Varsity rejects; Field Hockey—Soccer Game; fund raisers; new kilts; flats; get on the pitch; and 1-2-3-Uh! 39 CROSS COUNTRY The 1979 Nonnewaug Cross-Country teams completed seasons of mixed fortune under the direction of Coach Cary Partridge. The boys' team finished with a record of 3- 7, but senior Bob McCauley went on to become a Berkshire League All Star and went to the state championships. Much of the team strength was provided by seniors this year, but nevertheless Mr. Partridge looks forward to a good season next year. This year, for the first time, there was also a complete girls' team. This team started off with an excellent first season, finishing with a 7-4 record, placing fourth in the Berkshire League and placing eighth in the state. FIRST ROW: Daryl Mikeitis, Billy Kitchen, Eric Donlan, Pat Cruess, Calvin Wiltshire, Randy Dierks. SECOND ROW: Mr. Gary Partridge, Darryl Abriola, Troy Whitlock, Robert McCauley, Stanley Ouimette, Gary Bergmiller, Scott Beales. 40 FIRST ROW: Diane Cassidy, Sarah Pierson, GeorgeAnn Hendricks. Their performances changed drastically from last year, allowing them to pursue further competition. The Varsity team would like to thank Coach Lawless, Mr. Parkhouse, and Captain Joanne Cole for their supportive enthusiasm and dedication. Looking ahead to next year, the team says, See you next year for an even better season. 42 FIRST ROW: Robin D'Ambrose, Tracy McDougall, Debbie Bawlick, Linda Meyers, Leah Witherspoon, Dawn Barmmer, Sharon D'Ambrose. They were with a new coach and many new team members; a building block for teams of the future. They learned the very important lesson, that it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that counts. Although the record does not show it, many of the games were close, for they kept the devoted spectators intensely interested. 49 Freshman Basketball had an excellent season. Their overall record was 9 wins and 5 losses, and excellent start for a promising future of basketball at Nonnewaug. 50 FRONT ROW: Chris Neal, Dave Mandy, Ken Sperry, Robert Savage, Matt Speden. The intensity of each match reflects the professional preparation and discipline required. This year the team met with excellent competition and emerged with a winning season. Little bits and pieces Of laughter mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years. The friendship we remember Mistakes we regret The end of a love We never could forget. We can't erase the sadness Or wipe away the tears We can't undo the wrong We can't relive the years. But since memories keep building Each day can be the start Of making new and happy ones To store within our hearts. L.C. 56 We would like to thank Stuart Rabinowitz for all the time and effort he put into our yearbook pictures ... his cute jokes ... his great smile . . . and all the rough spots he got us out of. It wouldn't have been the same without you, Stu. But always remember, one can only get out of life what one puts into it. Give it your all! In the years to come, I hope you will look back upon the years you spent at Nonnewaug as happy ones, remembering the many activities you took part in, individually and as a class. Yes, as a class your accomplishments were many . . . I remember your freshman year. You were quite unglued, but you still had that very special warm personality that makes you so unique. In your sophomore year you really worked hard and came to- gether as a class. This was the year you accumulated a very substantial treasury, making you the richest class in the school at the time. You accomplished this with bake sales, jewelry sales, and a car wash. This was also the year that you initiated school spirit, to eventually cause the start of the Spirit Committee. But that wasn’t all. A group of you held several fried dough sales to raise money to pave the “Smoking Area” in the hope of changing the area into a “Student Park Area”. You also sponsored “No Smoking Day” in Nonnewaug for the American Cancer Society. Later you raised approximate- ly $125 for the Cancer Society. You ended the year by winning the overall competition for the sports events on Field Day. You certainly had a busy year. In your junior year you continued to raise money with fried dough sales, a dance, and a candy sale. Again you sponsored “No Smoking Day” for the American Cancer Society. Your senior year isn’t quite over yet. You are truly working hard and pulling together to plan your Senior Activities. Your Prom has to be a smash, so many of you have been so involved in its planning. Your class picnic at Oak and Spruce in Mass- achusetts will be a great day. The big project of the year, however, was painting the cafeteria wall. It surely brightens the place. Let’s not forget the class play, “Damn Yankees”. With over 60% of the class working on the play it has to be a success. Oh! I almost forgot to mention the Corn Bowl. The seniors lost, but not by much. I think the girls had more fun on the sidelines keeping warm than the guys had playing football. Then comes graduation, the end of your years at Nonnewaug. The day will be both happy and sad. The class that came into the school with a black cloud over its head is leaving in triumphant success. You’ve come a long way as a class and most important as individuals. I’ve en- joyed working with you and I will miss you all very much.
