Graphics: Philip Sams. Human beings are constantly looking ahead. Whether the matter is something trivial, like the weather, or more important, such as a career choice, people attempt to project their lives into the future. Lepanto '84: Projections wants you to look forward into your life. As a young adult, you have much to discover and plenty of years in which to learn. Your choice for the future depends on what you want to gain. Not only does what you want to gain influence the life ahead of you, but what the future will be also affects you. For example, since the future will be computer- oriented, courses teaching the uses of computers are available now in most schools. What we expect the future to be determines our learning today. The future is someplace we make, not somewhere we're going. Therefore, the two questions that are essential in determining life ten or twenty years from now are, What do l want to gain? and How can I make my future in the future? Projections: '84 serves the future by reminding you of your past. lt reminds you that whatever you make of your future will always have glimpses or your Nolan past in it. We hope these pages add to your glimpses. Cara Colella Editor U if IN OUR 0PINION . Ms. Mize Is The One For Lepanto '84 R'- 'z , if Left-Freshmen get smaller every day. As spirit built up, each class promoted its members to peak pep and the rally was off with cries of We've got spirit! Yes, we do! HOMECOMING '83 When Spirit Week drew to an end, Nolanites were ready for the grand finale- the annual Homecoming dance. Passing by the crowded tables you could hear: Can you believe she came with him'?! I just love your dress! Did you see that mum? Who is this Andy Barber guy? New couples, old couples, and odd couples all danced to the 92V2 Sound and Light Show. Even some NHS alumni returned to enjoy the dance. But who could compare to all those album winners? Her court included Denise Delgado, Karen Doskocil, Melinda Rodriguez, and Leslie Shaw. Congratulations, girls! After the presentation, Vikes went on to challenge the Hornets, but were defeated. The freshman managed to live through the week despite all their new skills and various forms of water torture indiscriminately administered by senior boys. For their endurance, the freshmen were rewarded with a sack lunch picnic around the Student Center complete with sack races and megaphone-spinning. Howdy Week '83 gave the freshman a look at the sophisticated attitudes of Nolan upperclassmen. Once they got their look, however, many of them wanted to get on their tricycles and ride home. 1 7,4 i - Fins AW? '- 'N rcs: ,fix .Q 5 .C 52233 GREEK TOGA DANCE? ZFX FW JD ,, r X S g ' No comment. We're only in it for the money! What do you mean, Where's the basket? ! This is football! 4 i l i i i l i i i FOOTBALL PHILCSOPHIES Football, from a coldly rational and physical view, is stupid. lt'is a game where 22 fools in ten pounds of plastic run around a rectangular pasture butting heads and grunting like buffalos. But football is not a coldly rational or physical game. It is a game of feeling, emotion, and most of all, heart. Heart is not something you see ofteng you do not look in the mirror and see HEART and DESIRE staring back at you. Rather it is something that comes out in testing times, when you are faced with the choice between quitting and pushing on. In football, every play is a test and to excel, you have to push yourself every play. When you're so tired and sore you can barely stand up and when the game is at a turning point, you can either lay down and die or suck it up and get after it. That is when your teammates have heart and you can see in their eyes and even more important in yourself. That knowledge, that rare look into what you're made of, can provide an inner strength that can support you in the greater tests of life. Sean Fitzgerald The game of football, brutal and punishing, as it may be, is well worth the time and the effort that an individual puts into the game. Life is, in many aspects, like the game of football. It is hardhitting and punishing on the player, and it takes its toll on everyone. The game of life has its first downs, loss of yards, and its goals, as does football. Football has given me something that not many other sports can give a person. It has impressed upon me qualities of leadership, and it has given me the realization that nothing in life comes easy and if you want something bad enough then you will always do your best to get it or accomplish your goal. But the greatest things that I have acquired from football are friendship and a team unity that I believe will always be among my teammates and I Andy Peterson Football will help young men in their future in many ways, starting with discipline. Young men who play football discipline themselves to hard work, promptness, and respect for authority. Also, playing football aids these young men to learn responsibility. When playing football, an individual has to give up a lot of the luxuries of going home after school. This in itself prepares young men for their future jobs and having to work every day. Also, the respect for authority helps them in their future when having a supervisor or boss. Probably the most important thing a young man learns when playing football is teamwork and unity. It teaches them how to get along with others. In conclusion, some other things that an individual would learn playing football would be knowledge of the sport and the rules, the importance of physical fitness, and, lately, personal hygiene. These things and many more are extremely important to a young man's future, especially in today's sports oriented society. Coach Doug Gollahon CRCSS CCUNTRY '83 m ax 9747 I S' zlgi'5.Y,. This is America's team??!! ng ,,, 5 5 VW' J . , 4 You've got to be kidding! VARSITY STRIDERS Varsity Track had to adjust to a whole new set of rules upon entering the TAPS league this year. Rather than qualifying for the spring state meet by placing first or second in events at one district meet, the members of the track team had to qualify with a certain time or distance at each regular season meet. The NHS run- ners found that this approach took some getting used to. Cries of Run for times, not to place! echoed over the infield as Coach Nelson encouraged his team. By the middle of the season, the team was fully represented in each event. The re- sults: a second-place finish for the girl's team at State, and a commendable at- tempt to place by the boy's team. The addition of a football team and both boy's and girl's track teams rounded out the athletic program, which also included boy's and girl's basketball and girl's vol- leyball. Besides the new sports, there were new coaches: Diane Urey and Bro. Bruce Dean, and a few volunteers: Tony Drollinger, Paul Hernandez, Pat Horrlgan, Sam Padilla, and Liz Foley. Although the size of Nolan's junior high increased to 122 students this year, only a few participated in sports. However, those that did participate worked hard, even though there was often confusion as to rules and skills during practices! In spite of the expected hassles of organiz- ing teams l Did you get a uniform? Did you turn in your eligibility card? Whereas in times past, men and not a few women found it likely to write down their premonitions of things out of time, out of sight, and in the future, to wit, the enduring prophecies of the man, Nostradamusg the man, Orwell, the woman, Lygeiag the man, Cayceg the woman, Dixon, And whereas these prophets have given cause for both sorrow and rejoicing, but little insight into the various characters who will indeed make up the future, And whereas the characters who will people the future have earned each of them the notoriety associated with their habitation in and about the environs of the high school known as Nolan, Now therefore be it acknowledged that a new band of prophets has made its way into the pages of history via the time-book known as Lepantog and that therein they have made the following prophecies regarding the characters who have crossed their paths as they wended their weird way outward from the school called Nolan. To wit, the future will find itself peopled with the likes of: Ernette Alford will be giving blue-light specials at K-Mart, where David Peet will be working as head janitor. John Anderson will be a computer scientist. Steve Ansley hopes to become an architect. Leslie Austin and Michelle Ellis will become models for Vogue. Rhonda Guevara will become a world champion ice-skater. Tony Hernandez is hoping he'll be good enough to caddy for Lee Trevino. Lastly, Anne Heinke hopes to become a sports medicine trainer for the gymnasium that Vince Higgins will own. Many of our fellow classmates hope to follow a religious vocation. Linda Franko hopes to marry Steve Perry of Journey, with Bryan Adams as Best Man. Tim Cooper and Shannon McGoey plan on getting married and living on a houseboat on the Atlantic Ocean-or is it the Pacific? But anyway . . . David Wise and Chris Hromcik hoped to be married someday, maybe not to each other, but married all the same. Robby Snelus will be marrying the 1984 Nolan High School Drill Team. Lastly, Marc Rose and Angela Torres both have marriage on their mindsfbut first they need to find some datesy. Some of the 1984 Seniors want to enter the exciting field of medicine. Cornelia Martinez hopes to be a doctor. Her staff of nurses will include Mary Margaret Ipser, Kathy Johnson, Kim Martin, and Christie Lane.
