Mr. Kettlekamp. head of maintenance. makes sure the jobs get done. He calls for assistance from the custodians whenever there is a problem of any kind. If a student has problems with his locker Dale is called for help. Whenever there is a student prank the custodians get the job of cleaning it up. The custodians also take care of all mechanical problems. Mr. Kettlekamp and the custodians do their very best to make sure our school runs smoothly and looks its very best at all times. 40 Maintenance personnel: Mr. Fred Kettlekamp. ORGANIZ A TIME FOR Co-editors-. Debbi Fox and Sue Clavin The 1979-1980 annual staff, which consisted of fourteen seniors, worked dutifully throughout the year to present our 1980 yearbook. This year's staff had four girls that attended a yearbook workshop at Quincy. The girls were taught many techniques in putting a yearbook together, from making layouts to taking pictures. The girls helped put together a miniture yearbook while at the workshop, which gave them some interesting ideas on how to improve our yearbook. The annual staff had to work extra hard on raising money this year because they added extra pages, and some new ideas that cost a little extra. Some of their money raising projects were taking tickets at games, having bake sale, sponsoring a donkey basketball game, and selling family portraits and jerseys. 42 Annual Staff First Row: Debbi Fox. He received a second at the section public speaking contest which made him eligible for district. He placed a district fourth with his speech on a swine disease. With competing in all the section contests and receiving such high placings. the chapter was awarded the first place total points plaque for Section 19. Another first for the chapter was having members elected to section offices. They were Mark Bertolino. president and Dorothy Matthews, reporter. One National FFA Officer and four major state officers came to Nokomis to speak to the whole student body. Four members received their State FFA Farmer degrees at the 1980 State Convention. They were Jim Blankenship. Louis Sloan, Mike Hand (also section star farmer) and Rosemary Maples (also second in the state star agribusinessperson). Karen Chausse was awarded the outstanding chapter reporter's award. Near the end of the convention chapter members again were elected to section offices for 1980-81. This year's Varsity volleyball team started the year with eleven returning team members-seven of them being letter winners. Sharon Johnson, a senior, was chosen captain of the Varsity squad. One of the team's strengths was the willingness to play to win in the future while possibly sacrificing the games at present. A weakness of the team, however was their inexperience at a high level of play. Hopefully they will overcome this in future years. The team went on to finish with a 7-10 record in regular play. 9-12 with the tournaments included. Sharon Johnson was named to the 1st team all-conference while seniors Sue Clavin and Julie Schweizer and junior Jolene Hagemeier received honorable mention. The Junior Varsity team finished with a winning record of 9-8. There should be a bright future for N. H. S. volleyball team with these J. V. players gaining experience. The 1979-80 Nokomis High School basketball team ended the season with a record of 15-12. The Redskins had six returning lettermen. all seniors. This year Nokomis coach. Maury Hough, taught a whole new style of play, one much different than our players were accustomed to. But the Redskins caught on quickly and won several games simply by out running their opponents on Coach Hough's fast break strategy. The team's strongest point was the unselfishness with which they played. The big weak spot this year was the inability to make free throws as the Redskins lost 7 games from the charity stripe. Despite the problems, the Redskins still made a fine bid for conference champs, but had to take second place behind Staunton. In the Regional though, the Redskins came on strong against Pana and beat them soundly. However, in the sectional, the Redskins dropped a close one to 14th ranked Mt. Pulaski — ending their season. Before every game in the state tournament, starting with the regional, the Redskins would get in a huddle in the locker room and Coach Hough would tell them to get rid of their butterflies. His last advice would be It's not the size of the dog that's in the fight, it’s the size of the fight that's in the dog.” 86 TRACKSTERS SPRINT Pictured left to right. Front row: DeeDee Hendrick. They were well coached by Miss Kris Wieneke. All of their hard work paid off because they had a fine season beating Raymond in a dual meet and Vandalia and Highland St. Paul in a triangular meet. A new trophy was added to the girls' trophy case when they went to the Sullivan Relays and brought home the Third Place team trophy. Many individuals did well in the County and Conference Meets also this year. Also seven new records were set this year. Coach Davis had high hopes for this year’s baseball team, but due to injuries, and circumstances beyond his control, it turned out to be a disappointment. The Redskins ended the season with a record of 9-9. Junior Dan Wright made a fine showing with a record of 6-3, winning the Red Ruffing award for the second year in a row. Sporadic play was common, keeping the record right around the .500 mark most of the year. Excessive errors and lack of hitting cost several games, including the first round Regional game against Hillsboro, which erased the Redskins from a state bid. In conference action the Redskins did a little better as they put in a fine effort and ended their season with a 7-4 record and a second place in the conference. All conference recognition went to Brad Janssen. Honorable Mention was awarded to Ben Schwarm. Tracy Epley. Dan Wright, and John Marquess. Marquess was the lead hitter with a .38 average, followed by Brad Janssen .343. and Dan Wright .333. Pat Jachino led the team with eight stolen bases. JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL first row: Russ Weller. With mixed feelings, 85 boys and girls nervously made last adjustments, to caps, gowns, and tassles. Laughing to keep from crying, they marched up the aisle to Pomp and CircumstanceThe invocation was given by Reverend John M. Savoree, followed by the band playing a selection, Rhythm of the Winds. ” CO-valedictorians, Debbi Fox. and Linda Funk, along with the salutatorian, Sandy Gehlbach delivered their speeches to the graduates. All three speeches were unique for they revealed the many happy memories of the past four years, but they also made their classmates wonder about the future. Mr. Guidish announced the top twelve students of the senior class, who had maintained a 4.5 average during their four years at N.H.S. Mr. Guidish then presented the senior class to the President of Board of Education, Mr. Eugene Johnson, so they could receive their diplomas. Reverend John M. Savoree gave the benediction, which was followed by the band playing Lamar. ” as the Class of '80 marched from their chairs, some smiling through the tears. Co-valedictorian. Hi HOLA FROM ALE In an interview with an annual staff member Ale discussed her goals, and gave her opinions about life in the U.S.A. These are the highlights: I wanted to come to the United States because I want-ed to know your customs and your form of life. I also wanted to tell other people about my country. The A.F.S. is a program with the goal of friendship and peace between the participating countries. There are several differences between the United States and Costa Rica. For example we eat a little breakfast. a big lunch and a little supper. We cook our food differently also. We don 7 need airconditioning and we can use the same clothes year around. Several families are very conservative. In my country we have many of the same hobbies as you do here in the United States. We go to movies, dance and participate in all kinds of sports. Our schools are very different from the schools here in the United States. We have to wear special uniforms and we only go Jo school in the morning on some' days and in the afternoon on other days. Our school year is from March to November. We also go to high school for five years. These past nine months have gone so fast I can't believe it. I want to thank Mrs. Normagene Goodwin for taking me into her home and loving me as if I was one of her own. She and her family have given me so much help with my English and getting aquainted with people. My experience on the volleyball team was really good for me. I had alot of fun on the bus going to the away games. I want to thank everyone that has made this year so exciting and one of the best in my life. My A.F.S. year has been great!
