Old Nokomis 1979 Nokomis High School Volume-XLII Co-Editors Debby Pieper And Gail Keller Sponsor Mrs. Penny DeWerff And Nokomis Annual Staff Presents “THE LAST OF THE 70’s” About Life, About Others, In the ' 'last of the 70's'', we lived with hearts that raced and minds that dreamed and clocks that had no hour hands. With common goals, and common longings, we laughed, we loved, we played, we won. Those were our school days, our happy days. They were real because we made them real; they were alive because we existed. A But Most Of All, About Ourselves Co-Edi tors-Photographers As Co-Editors of this year's annual, we feel we should show our thanks to the annual staff, Mrs. DeWerff, the faculty, and the rest of the school in helping us make this yearbook successful. THANK-YOU. We hope you enjoy this yearbook as much as we've enjoyed putting it together. We tried to combine your good times with everyone's memories and make this yearbook one by which you can always remember your friends and special times. Not only ourselves but the annual staff as a whole worked very hard to make ' 'The Last of the 70's a memory book. It's impossible to put everyone's ideas, all the exciting times, our winning and losing together, our growing together, and our final goodbyes, into a few pages because the best part of these times are kept within each of your hearts. Let's not forget the times at N.H.S. or our friends, and if we do, we hope this book will help you remember ' 'The Last of the 70's'' Gail Keller and Debby Pieper Photographers: Carl Marley, Peter Millburg, Lorraine Alexander, Pilchard Jachino, Kathy Ovca, Jim Havera, and Scott Keele. Mr. Davis's statement is as follows: My goal for now and always will be to make sure that students will have a sound, basic, working knowledge, good enough to help them in determining and attaining the career of their choice. This involves doing my best in selection of materials, educational programs, and qualified personnel, from kindergarten through high school.1' Unit Sec, Mrs. Lavina Reese does a very capable job as Unit bookkeeper and secretatry. Even through many changes in administration Mrs. Reese and Mrs. Bems remain to keep the unit organized and steady. Mrs. Eula Jean Cesaretti, high school secretary, does a fine job of keeping the office running on an even keel. Even when faced with student treasurers who are just sure they paid that bill, and student organizations (like the yearbook staff) who have more than one money box, Eulah Jean takes it all in stride and maintains her composure. retaries Mrs. Pauline Bems is the Unit office secretary who does a great job handling the paper work for the busiest organization in Nokomis. He and the custodial staff, pictured below right, do an excellent job of keeping the school in tip-top working condition. Their job includes everything from the pick-up and delivery of mail, to the erasing of students graffeti from the various art areas around the school. When an occasional student prank becomes a custodial headache, Dale, Liz and Fritz clean up the mess and still manage a smile for the errant student. COOKS Head cook Shirley Pavolka and her staff spend many hours planning, cooking and serving nourishing meals to a hungry student body. The most dangerous spot in the school is the stairway at 12:02 when the students stampede toward the cafeteria as if starvation were behind them. Pictured below are Mrs. Helen Poteet, Mrs. Jackie Finley, and Mrs. Shirley Pavolka. The best contests were in the poultry division where the team won third in secion and second in state. The team was led by Wes Spears who won third in individual points, and Mark Bertolino who won fifth in individual points. Foundation awards went to nine of the twelve NHS students entering the contest. Seven students won in the district competition, and among those Mark Bertolino won the state award for crop production. The Nokomis chapter had four State Farmer awards. They went to Bob Dahler, Dorothy Matthews, Greg McCallum; and Mark Bertolino, who went on to the state competition for Star State Farmer of Illinois. The club also provides an opportunity for the members to put their knowledge of the Spanish language to use. As for activities, the Spanish club held a bake sale and cake raffle, and the proceeds were donated to the local AFS chapter. An educational item is annually purchased for the Spanish room by the club. This year they are purchasing a sweat shirt with a Spanish moto for each member. The remainder of the club funds will be used to provide an enjoyable and educational activity for its members. Speaking up, helping out, expressing opinions, guiding others, showing leadership, and finding entertainment was an essential for this year. The Student Council sponsors the Homecoming and Valentine dances, as well as sponsoring special assemblies whenever they can, in order to entertain the school. This year they invited the Lincoln Land Community Jazz Band and John Jarboe. These Student Council members were chosen by the student body to represent each class. Their sponsor, Mrs. DeWerff, and the Student Council are to be complimented on a great year and great way to end the 70's. 24 “LAST OF THE 70’s” N-CLUB From right to left: Dorothy Matthews, Charlene Hill, Vicky West, Jill Boarman, Brenda Jostes, Marilyn Janssen, Laura Funk, Julie Burk, Jolene Hagemeier, Karen Lehman, Lana Foster, Julie Schweitzer, Sue Clavin, Penny Pavolka, Shelly Sanders, Tina Flowers, Missy Hoehn, Sheryl Porter, Gail Keller, Kathy Ovca, Linda Funk, Jean Kottwitz, Jodi Wilson, Debbie West, June Kottwitz, Gail Franzen, Chris Wunderlich, Dee Dee Hendrick, Debby Pieper, Joe Michael, Ben Schwarm, Richard Jachino, Kevin Willians, Danny Clavin, Jeff Butler, Jim Brookshire, Mike Steele, Tracy Epley, Charles Friesland, Mark Bertolino, Bob Jones, Scott Keele, Brent Clavin. April 28, 1979, Nokomis High School Gym, 8:00 p.m. If you were one of the many students that attended the 1979 Junior Senior Prom, at this time you were entering the gym in a grand march with your date at your side. You looked up and saw a beautiful rainbow ceiling and all around you was a spring atmosphere . As you walked over the bridge in the middle of the gym you joined the rest of the couples in a slow dance. By this time the music sounded good and you looked up once more to see the band ' 'Thunder'' providing the music for the evening. The music soon stopped and you lined up to get your picture taken by Ken Meade. You smiled great but you know your hair was out of place. Oh well, don't let it spoil a nice evening. After dancing on your feet another hour and just when your throat was as dry as it could be, the Juniors saved your life with punch and cake. A final get together. A loving touch. PIECES OF APRIL About had it Jeff? The coronation took place at 10:30. The gym filled with many people who came to watch the royal moment. Everyone began to wonder just who would receive the honor. The candidates walked in over the bridge and stood in front of the neatly drawn background. The tension rose and suddenly Kathy Lehman and Richard Jachino were chosen 1979 Prom king and Queen. Before everyone rushed off for a good meal and the After Prom party, they took one last look at the decorations, the people and realized it was a night to remember! . The duties of cheerleaders are many and varied. They cheer at both home and away basketball and football games. They supply a coat check at all home games and often have cake raffles. They support the team and represent the school. The cheer is not as important as the leader, and this year's cheerleaders have shown their leadership tremendously. Since the team lost 16 senior lettermen, many underclassmen received starting positions. The first contest for the Redskins brought the old rival from Pana to the Redskin field on a Friday night. After four hard quarters of football, the Redskins came out on the loosing end. This game was to set the fate for the rest of the season. Although the Redskins failed to win, the players never quit during any one game. S3 managers; Matt Jones, Eric Cress. Band added Flag-Girls as a new attraction to the summer parades and football games. Sixteen girls tried out, and eight were chosen by faculty members to represent the band. The duties of the squad were to march in all summer parades with the band and entertain the fans during the football season with halftime flag exhibitions. Since this was the first year for the Flag-Girls much needed experience was lacking, but with only three Seniors leaving this year, alot of talent is left behind. LOVE IS: This year's tennis team consisted of sixteen players led by coach Kris Wien-eke. This is the fourth year NHS has had a tennis team, and they have been improving more and more each year. The outlook is good for next year's tennis team also. There are eleven team members returning from this year and also two NHS tennis lettermen; so a more experienced team is expected. The team had a one and six record and finished with a tie for fifth place in the Pana District meet. GIRLS’ TENNIS 60 I did it! Somebody hit it again! Trying hard. ... and its over! Nice hit Julie ! Tired but happy. A YEAR OF 1st Row: Cristy Tuetken, Jolene Hagemeier, Coach Pat Hadley, Julie Burk, Marilyn Janssen. 2nd Row: Kathy Ovca, Tina Flowers, Paula Janssen, Julie Schweitzer, Sue Clavin, Denise Bowers, Gail Keller. The Nokonis High School Varsity Volleyball team played a new type of defense this year. The team played a server-setter offense and defense which takes advance skills, practice and experience to work. This new type of offense and defense appeared successful in some games such as the Raymond-Lincoln-wood game. The results of this new style will become more evident as the team gains a year's experience. Gail Keller completed the season as high scorer. The team will lose some valuable senior players but there are many returning letter winners who will be able to continue the effort to improve. The Junior Varsity Volleyball team completed the 1978 season with 5 wins and 12 losses. Coach Hadley and the team considered the season good because the majority of the Jr. Varsity team was inexperienced in skills and in sports competition. We look forward to a more successful 79 season in Volleyball with this year's introduction of competitive volleyball at the Jr. High level. These were the magic numbers for the 1979 Redskins basketball team. Their 14 and 12 overall record was the result of a series of close games-games made close by injuries to key players and late season disciplinary actions. Their South Central Conference season was just as unpredictable as its Redskins led throughout most of the season before accepting 2nd place and a 9 and 3 conference re -cord. Some of the awards won before the season's end included the team award of 3rd place in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament and the individual awards of Scott Keele, all-tour-ney at Vandalia and Shelbyville and all-conference, and Mike Meiners, 2nd team all-conference. 4 65 J.V. They ended their season with a 9-10 overall record and a winning 6-4 conference. Knowing that they would be playing against larger and more experienced schools, the girls practiced two or three hours a day. The team broke an old tradition by failing to bring home a trophy, but they did advance in the sub-regional only to be defeated by St. Teresa Decatur. With only 2 seniors leaving the team, there will be much dedication and experience left for the future varsity to thrive upon. 1978-1979 Schedule Shelbyville Mt. Barry Manilow Slow down you crazy child your so ambitious for a juvenile, but then if you're so smart tell me why are you still so afraid? Billy Joel I'm going to miss this old school, for a million different reasons ... 1 remember what it was like to be new around here ... The place seemed a little bigger then and though I never admitted it, a whole lot scarier. 1 remember searching the hallways and stairways and gym filled with unfamiliar faces, hoping to find someone to share my confusion with ... and feeling so grateful whenever anyone smiled. For a while 1 wondered how 1 was ever going to fit into this strange, super-sophisticated world, ... O'But now I wonder what 1 was so worried about. The confidence came and so did the fun. What an assortment of unfor-getable characters I've met here. There were class mates 1 liked right from the start, and those who took a little getting use to. There were teachers I loved and teachers 1 survived. There were upper-class celebrities who awed me with their style and lower-class innocents who appeared to stand in awe of mine. Most of all there were the good friends I made here and all the together times we shared here. I remember times when we won together and times when we lost, times when we worried together and times when we celebrated, but how do you ever say ' 'thanks'' for a mind full of beautiful memories, 1 remember the autumn when all the excitement in the world flashed between two goal posts; winters warm with the glow of our holiday spirits; a springtime that danled us with its promise of freedom, and long lazy summers when not doing much of anything was our fa -vorite sport. Looking back, I'm amazed that so many crazy and colorful things could have happened in just these four years, but I'm glad they all happened to me. It won't be easy saying goodbye to this school and to these friends. But I have so much more to learn about the world and about myself and its time to get started, I only know that wherever I go whatever 1 do, the days I've spent right here will always be a really special part of my life ... A time of the 70's. All That He Is And All That He’ll Become. i Let us remember the excitment of a united spirit, the challenge of knowledge, the warmth of a smile, and the endless march of time itself. This year, the bowl featured an expanded format with 32 teams competing, some coming from as far away as Evanston. This year's team hoped to better last year's third place performance or at least equal. But, alas, fortune did not smile on Nokomis this year as, after beating Gillespie in the first round, we were trounced by Sullivan in the second round. Apparently, the new categories of questions touched areas the team had no knowledge in. However, hope springs eternal as the team plans to be better prepared next year and will hopefully make a better showing. Good Luck. 117 GRADUATION 1979 “WORLD WERE NOT We can't all be captains, We' ve got to be crew. There's something for all of us here. There's big work to do. There's lesser to do. But the task you must do is the nearer. If you can't be a highway, Just be a trail. If you can't be the sun, Be a star. It isn't by size that you win or you fail. Be the best of whatever you are. (poet unknown) DEDICATION Joey Spannagel, a member of the class of 1980, who died on June 25, 1978. He Is Just Away. 1 cannot say, and will not say That he is dead; he is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of a hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming of how very fair, This land must be since he lingers there; And you, oh you with the wildest yearn, For the old time step and glad return. Think of him as traveling on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here. Think of him still as the same, I say, For he is not dead, he is just away.
