The 1977-78 Annual Staff, which consisted of twenty-one seniors, worked diligently throughout the year to present our 1978 yearbook. The theme of the yearbook, 1 'Games,'1 proved to be a fitting name because the staff went through much aggravation trying to meet deadlines after missing so many school days. Because of this, the staff had to work even harder to finish the yearbook on time. 55 Glenda Beck, Financial Manager; Pam Voils, Photographer; Carol Merriman, Asst. Local merchants contributed greatly to the newspaper with many advertisements, while the Free-Press allowed us to use many machines necessary in printing the paper. The paper was printed monthly with such columns as, Coach of the Month, Bomb of the Month, and horoscopes. The varsity squad received a first place ribbon after being evaluated on the last day. The cheerleaders also worked throughout the year to make money by selling eggs, raffling a free ticket to home football games, and coat check. They accomplished something no other Nokomis team has in 57 years. They were undisputed conference champs and went on to play in the state playoffs, where they became one of the top 8 teams in the state in the 2-A class. The Redskins were defeated by Pana in the opening game of the season, but went on to win 9 straight games, and lost to eventual state champs Mahomet-Seymour. In order to advance to the playoffs the Redskins had to win the last three games of the regular season against Carlinville, Staunton, and Gillespie. These three games are always the most difficult and often determine if the Redskins go to the playoffs. After defeating Carlinville 27-24; Staunton 26-8; and Gillespie 27-13, the Redskins defeated the Gibson City Greyhounds in the first round of the playoffs, with a score of 35-14. Season Record 9-2 Over three thousand fans crowded into the Nokomis stands, only to see Mahomet-Seymour defeat Nokomis by a score of 41-14. Congratulations Redskins on a great season! The Nokomis Redskins finished their 1977-78 season with a 17-9 record. The Redskins placed second in the conference, and Piasa finished first. The 77-78 season also saw us placing second in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament and second in the Shelbyville Invitational Tournament. Greg Archibald was placed on the Decatur all-area team and Greg also made first team all-conference. Barry Epley and Scott Keele were placed on the all conference team - Honorable Mention. In addition to these players the Redskins were aided by the efforts of Danny Clavin, John Keating and, Curt Hagemeier. This years bench consisted of Don Redeker, Dennis Hand, Richard Jachino, Charles Friesland, Mark Bertolino and Steve Cachera. Danny Clavin became ball-handling guard for the Redskins during the Vandalia Tournament and pulled the Redskins together for the rest of the year. John Keating was the years 1 '6th man'1 and was the years leading free throw percentage shooter. Curt Hagemeier handled the ball for the Redskins the first part of the year and moved to forward when Danny Clavin took over. The fans went wild this year as always, rallying behind Blaz, our Indian Chief; and our cheerleaders kept our winning spirit alive, long after other team's died. Through the efforts of our players, the Redskins won a lot of games that looked less than hopeful. GOOD JOB NHS BASKETBALL J.V., SOPHOMORES, AND FRESHMEN COMPETE Junior Varsity: B. Schwarm, T. After four long years there's still one ceremony to go through to make graduating official. Is it worth it? Think of all the things you have to remember and of all the things that can go wrong. You have to remember to mail out invitations, order thank you notes, press your gown, have your picture taken, wear shoes you won't trip in, and put the tassle on the correct side (which side?) ... You worry that it might be hot, that it might rain, (it almost did, remember the thunder), that the speeches will be long and boring, or that you'll forget to shake hands when you get the diploma ... And then there's the receiving line, and you'll try not to cry too much or laugh too loud even though it is the last time you'll see so and so, or the last time you'll play in the band ... Then hooray! graduation is over with; but before you can P-E-E-L out of that parking lot, you have to turn in your cap and gown. You do get to keep the tassle though ... what a lot of hassle for a little tassle ! 107 WHAT ALOT OF HASSLE SUPER ACHIEVERS no 4.5 HONORS - Joe Gasparich, Rhonda McDonald, Diane Janssen, Cindy Burk, Glenda Beck, Kurt Johnson, K.C. Coach Mrs. Rita Westenberger, Curt Janssen, Peter Millburg, K.C. Hall, Jim Kiefer, and Senator Davidson. 113 A SALUTE TO THE ’78 SENIORS Our memories of relationships and shared experiences will ever be imprinted on our minds. Our days have been unique. After four years of preparation, we have finally arrived at the point when we shall also reflect onto those years which we enter as we go forward to meet the world and the challenges it will bring. 114 115 116 Today's the day 1 graduate; To this school I come no more. This, my goal of the last 12 years, Is what I've been waiting for. The days were laced with fun and games Along with my growing up; I've developed a personality — I've had to measure up. Not only to tests and teachers — Had to make it with my peers; And now that the struggle is over, I feel like shedding tears. I'm going to miss my classmates And the teachers' constant calls; I'm going to miss the notes and such We passed along the halls. But with the diploma comes a sad Thought growing inside of me; My adolescent years are gone — 1 must now face reality. — Grace E.
