Old Nokomis — 1977 Nokomis High School Nokomis, Illinois Volume LX Co-Editors — Stephanie McElroy, Jan Ruppert Sponsor — Mrs. Penny DeWerff Retracing Past Horizons As we see what has been, and what has gone before us, We have the strength to carry on, no matter what befalls us. For past horizons we retrace past memories we recall, Of laughter and loud voices echoing through the halls The happy times of yesterday, the friends we knew and loved, The everchanging heavens, the stars and sun above, Retracing our horizons of both darkness and of light, And always keeping the future within our sight. By: Lynda Banfield 2 - Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still acheiving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. -Longfellow- Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. 4 Jo Ann Archibald . The girl's Volleyball team had a hard season, ending with a 5 - 14 record. Coach Hadley stressed teamwork throughout the season, and the girls played well together against greatly improved area teams. They began the season on a positive note by defeating Witt in three games. The best of three games is a match. After losing the next three matches, the team achieved their ultimate goal by beating their arch-rival, Pana. This was the first time that Nokomis has ever beaten Pana in volleyball. Their next win came against Gillespie, who at that time was undefeated in the Conference. After winning one more match at Vir-den, the girls entered the District Tournament with a 4-13 record. Their first match in the District was a -gainst Witt. Using their now-developed skills in serving, soft-setting, and spiking, the Redskins beat Witt in three close games. Then they played Ramsey, and suffered a heartbreaking loss to a good team. So even with a 5 - 14 record, the girls showed the fans some exciting matches. 64 Varsity Co-Captains - Myra Merriman, Debbie Cachera. J. V. Captain - Nancy DeWerff. J. V. Greatly Improved J. V. Members - Left to right - Robin Porter, Pat Crow, Kathy Ovca, Lisa Johnson, Laura Funk, Julie Burk, Julie Schweizer, Nancy DeWerff, Carol Merriman, Sharon Johnson, Tammy Hagemeier. Bottom - Coach Pat Hadley. The J. V. team gave Nokomis hopes for volleyball success in the future. The girls lost only five matches. Two of these defeats were against Staunton and Carlinville early in the season. But in later matches against these teams, Nokomis came out victorious. They beat the Mt. Olive and Virden teams twice each. The team consisted of 3 Freshmen, 4 Sophomores, and 4 Juniors. They showed good potential in spiking and serving, and with more experience next year, they should develop skills in bump passing and setting. With a 10 - 5 season record, the J. V. team gives Nokomis a bright outlook for future volleyball teams. OPPONET NOKOMIS Witt Won Raymond Lost Staunton Lost Mt. Both wins were over Carlinville, the second being a very exciting game for the home crowd. In tne last 15 seconds Shelly Sanders sank two free throws to give Nokomis the victory 46-45. The girls participated in the Carrollton Invitation Tournament again this year. They did not place in the tournament but Sharon Johnson was selected to the All-Tournament team. This year's Free throw award goes to Shelly Sanders who made 12 of 20 free throws for 60% . Myra Merriman won the rebounding award with a 6.1 average. The future looks bright for the girls basketball team at NHS. There were only three seniors on the team this year so with experience on their side, next years team should fare well. 66 J. V. But, although they did not win any meets, some of the guys broke school records. Greg Archibald set a new record in the 440-yard dash with a time of 54.4. Tim Marquess, in the 330-yard low hurdles, broke the record with a time of 43.6. The 440-yard relay team, consisting of Bryan Kimbro, Greg Archibald, Jim Brookshire, and Tim Marquess, had a record-breaking time of 48.9. This relay team also placed 4th in the conference track meet. This year was the last year that N.H.S. will be having boy's track, so they should be commended for the effort they have shown in the past years. 75 Varsity Has Winning Season Bottom Row: Left To Right, B. We finished the year with a 6-3 over-all record and a 4-2 conference record. Even though we started off the season with a 14-13 loss to our rival Pana, we went on to win our next five games. Our winning streak was brought to a halt with a 14-0 loss to Carlinville. Our hopes for winning the conference were shattered when we lost 21-7 in a hard fought contest to a very good Gillespie team. Gillespie went on to win the conference and finish 2nd in the Class 2-A state football play-offs. Nokomis also placed 11 men on the all-conference team. Defensive back Bud Foster was selected to the Decatur Herald allarea team. With many returning starters and players, the Redskins are looking forward to another successful season next year. We finished the season with a 23-4 over-all record and a 12-0 conference record. For the fifth straight year, we won the South Central Conference championship. The season started off on a sour note with losses to Glen-wood and Vandalia. By the next week-end, the Redskins had gotten it together and overcame Pana and Gillespie in two action-packed overtime games. We kept up our winning ways to enter the Vandalia Tourney with a 5-2 record. Seeded Number One, we were victorious over Farina and Ramsey. And we came through with a 70-69 victory over Vandalia to bring home the first place trophy. We entered the Shelbyville Tourney seeded Number Two with a 9-game winning streak. Our hopes for winning another championship were quickly shattered with a 67-65 defeat to our rival Pana. We came back to beat Shelbyville and Flora for consolation honors. We won the remainder of our regular season games, even though bad weather caused many games to be canceled and be rescheduled. Steve Gonet scored 44 points in a win over Virden to break the old record of 42 points held by Neil Alexander and Rick Brueckner. Another record was set as we scored 113 points in a 113-44 victory over Mt. Olive. An added attraction this year was our Indian Mascot, Phil Bla-zich. Blaz added a lot of spirit and enthusiam to both the team and the fans. Big Red entered the Regional with a 12-game winning streak. We defeated Cowden-Herrick and Shelbyville to earn the right to play Stewardson-Strasburg for championship. It proved to be a close contest all the way, but luck was against us as Stewardson-Strasburg nipped us 71-69. Our season came to an end, but we can look back on it with pride as many of our goals were accomplished. For the first time in the history of Nokomis High School, the Redskins baseball team was one of the final eight teams in the state. The Big Red Machine won their district, regional and sectional games to advance to the state finals in Peoria. We had the smallest enrollment of the final eight teams with 365. The other schools had enrollments ranging from 750-3800. With Stephen Decatur as our opponent in the opening game, we were fired up for the big game. Many excited Nokomis fans were there backing the team and cheering them on. Red ' 'Nokomis-Go Big Red'' shirts stood out brightly in the crowd of people. We played well, but errors were costly as Stephen Decatur overcame us 8-4 to win the game. It was a dissappoint-ment but we were still proud of our guys for advancing that far. The team was welcomed back to Nokomis the following evening by a parade of cars and the team was given a tour of the town on the fire engine. Later in the evening a pep rally was held at the high school with many Nokomis fans there honoring them. The Redskins captured the South Central Conference title and lost to Hillsboro in the championship game of the Montgomery County Tourney that went into extra innings. Coach Davis was honored by being named ' 'Area Baseball Coach of the Year'' by the Decatur Herald. One great season has passed yet we will always have the memories of going to state. We now look forward to next year and hopefully a return trip to State. The cafeteria and stage were beautifully decorated with streamers, flowers, stars, draw-back curtains, and back drops done in royal blue, baby blue, white, and silver. This romantic atmosphere included a waterfall, a water fountain in the center of the dance floor, a wishing well, and two mirror balls. Music was provided by The Lightenin'. Again, an after-prom dance was planned and financed by the students. It lasted from 2 to 7 a.m. including an early morning breakfast. The night ended as the song says, I've got pieces of April but its a morning in May. 99 Retracing The Servers: Mark Simpkins, Chris Umberger, Joe Niesler, Scott Keele, Richard Jachino, Lorraine Alexander, Brenda Jostes, Wes Spears, Laura Funk, and Kathy Lehman Crownbearers: Brian Tober-man, Angie Craft King Roy Marquess Queen Karen Ruppert 100 Pieces Of April Retracing Years Myra Merriman Debbie Cachera Nola Brummet Sue Carter Tammy Piefer Dawn DeLuka Gail West Cindy Crowe 102 When Crawling Robin Hurst Jan Ruppert Debbie Grimes Teresa Menin Stephanie McElroy Sue Coling Lester Hamlin Perry Dunaway 103 Was Our Jo Lynn Dietl Roger Estes Michelle Hagemeier Lola Grauer Rick Foster Karen Bolte Debi Sanders Top Speed v; 6 Jo Ann Archibald Linda Johnson Melody Schniepp Steve Porter Sherry Elliott Donna Johnson Karen Ruppert 105 77 In ’77 The battle seemed over And the victory finally won As they sat waiting For their turn to come When they received that final reward Commemorating that special occasion Then, with a flip of a tassel They departed Each knowing that old friends and acquaintances would be left behind As they reached out for new horizons and new beginnings 106 107 Horizons In Achievement Valedictorian Valedictorian Salutatorian Outstanding Athlete Vicky Arlene Huber Linda Marie Johnson Melody Sue Schniepp Illinois State Scholars: L.
